Sub-$100 Android Tablet Coming To Sprint This Weekend
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsZTEOptik
This Super Bowl Sunday, the company is releasing a new 7-inch Android Honeycomb tablet -- the ZTE Optik -- with pretty decent specs and a $100 price tag that undercuts the Kindle Fire by half. There's a catch, of course. To get that dirt-cheap price, you'll need to sign up for a 2-year data plan with Sprint, whose tablet data options start at $20 for 1GB/mo. (Wha...?!) Otherwise, you'll need to plunk down $350 in upfront cash to go plan-free.

NEC's other AccuSync models are split between square screens and 16:10 displays.

Netbooks Alive and Well in MSI Country, New Wind U180 Follows Cedar Trail into Town
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksMSIWind U180
Who knew netbooks would prove so resilient? By all means, the growing popularity and falling prices of tablet PCs along with the rollout of Intel's Ultrabook bandwagon could have spelled doom for the netbook form factor. But along comes Cedar Trail and suddenly there's renewed interest in these pint-sized notebooks, at least for one more generation anyway. MSI, one of the driving forces in the netbook category, just unveiled its new Wind U180 for 2012. "The Wind U180, meticulously crafted by MSI for 2012, marks a new zenith in computer technology, offering both performance and esthetically pleasing looks," MSI says. "It comes in minimalist black, angel white or lavender, is less than one-inc...

ViewSonic Launches VX2336s-LED Monitor with "Seductive" Curves
Like UnlikeFiled in: MonitorsViewSonicVX2336s-LED
We prefer to turn on our monitors than to be turned on by them, but hey, to each their own. If a head-turning display is what you're after, ViewSonic says its latest LED has a "seductively curved frame with piano-black mirrored surface." Sounds delightful, but what really excites us is the 23-inch IPS panel ViewSonic equipped its new VX2336s-LED monitor with.
ViewSonic claims its exclusive SuperClear IPS technology provides vertical and horizontal viewing angles as wide as 178 degrees. It also enhances gray levels when displaying dark colors, resulting in a high contrast ratio capable of displaying "true black" and distinct color depth, ViewSonic says.

Qualcomm and Ericsson Demonstrate SR-VCC Voice Handover from LTE to WCDMA on MSM8960
Like UnlikeFiled in: Ericsson
Until now, the way voice has worked on handsets with a 4G LTE air interface has been, well, interesting. That is to say, thus far all voice calls haven't been over 4G LTE but conventional circuit-switched (as opposed to packet-switched) 2G or 3G networks like CDMA2000 1x in 3GPP2 land, or WCDMA/GSM in 3GPP land. For example, on Verizon LTE the handset has a second radio always camping 1x for voice and SMS, and on AT&T LTE the handset falls back from LTE to WCDMA for the voice transaction. This is CSFB - Circuit-Switched FallBack. LTE deployments thus far have focused primarily on data connectivity for a variety of reasons, and further logistical hurdles like emergency call support has made V...

LG P880 and P700 Android smartphones discovered, MWC debut sounds plausible
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLG
It appears that someone who had too much spare time at their disposal has discovered a pair of new LG Android smartphones. The handsets in question, known only as the LG P880 and the LG P700 at this time, have passed UPnP certification on February 1.
The P880 is likely to be a high-end smartphone judging by the fact that it is allegedly equipped with a 1280 by 720 HD display. Providing the processing power is a TI OMAP 44x0 processor accompanied by 1 gigabyte of RAM. In terms of software, the smartphone runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Besides, it is possible that the smartphone we are dealing with is the LG X3, which we heard of not long ago.
As far as the P700 is concerned, it is said ...

Kim Dotcom Refused an Appeal and Still Denied Bail
Like UnlikeKim Dotcom has been refused an appeal to be freed on bail by a New Zealand court, as its opinion that he is a "flight risk" still hasn't changed.
That means Kim Dotcom has returned to custody until 22 February, the day of his scheduled extradition hearing. According to the Guardian, "the high court in Auckland said the lower court judge was right to rule there was a significant risk that Dotcom, who had passports and bank accounts in three names, might try to flee the country". No shit.

Feds Seize 307 Sports Domains Ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl
Like UnlikeThe Super Bowl is like a goose that lays golden eggs from which cash cows hatch. It makes obscene amounts of money. So, that could be why the DHS has stepped up its confiscation of sports-related domains in the run-up to Sunday's match—nuking a total of 307 separate sites.
The seizures were part of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) project, Operation in Our Sites. ICE leveraged civil-seizure laws conventionally used to confiscate physical assets with suspected ties to illegal activity (being stolen, fenced, used in another crime, etc). They exploited the fact that .net, .com, and .org are controlled by US organizations (Verisign and the Public Internet Registry) to not only tak...

Microsoft makes its 'Gmail Man' video official in privacy fight against Google
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftGoogle
We have seen the "Gmail Man" video before thanks to a leak, but Microsoft just posted it to the company's official YouTube, Twitter and Facebook pages. The spoof video was originally broadcast at Microsoft's internal Global Exchange sales conference on July 20th last year, and it depicts a mail man riffling through letters (email) to find keywords for ads. "Would you trust this guy to deliver your mail?" asks Microsoft on its Facebook page, one Facebook commenter responded "I trust him about as much as I trust Hotmail Man."
Microsoft's decision to bring the video back to life clearly follows its exploitation of the concern around Google's privacy policy amendments. The software giant is runn...

Dotcom claims the officers that entered his home were "quite aggressive" and punched him in the face, kicked him and stepped on his hands, according to a 3 News report.
Police argue that Dotcom fled to a safe room and ignored knocks on the door, forcing officers to forcefully enter the home. He is also accused of failing to obey orders to show his hands, while illegal weapons were also found in the room.
Authorities have charged Dotcom with racketeering, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money launderin...

You might be a terrorist if you have two cell phones, use Web proxies
Like UnlikeAre you concerned about your digital privacy enough to use proxies and encryption software? Do you voice chat with fellow PC gamers? If so, you might be a terrorist, according to FBI and DoJ. Public Intelligence has discovered a federal document outlining a "Communities Against Terrorism" initative that describes various "suspicious" activities and offers tips on reporting them to the government.
The guideline (PDF) lists many perfectly normal behaviors but tries to validate their inclusion by emphasizing extremes that are completely open to interpretation. For instance, someone involved in terrorist activities might be "overly" concerned about their privacy and attempt to shield their scree...

Marvell hints at plans to enter Chinese Windows Phone market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Marvell
American chipmaker Marvell is hinting that it may be producing chipsets for the Chinese Windows Phone market. In an interview with Daily Tech, the director of Marvell's applications processor business unit, Jack Kang, predicted that, "If there's Windows Phones in China, there will probably be Windows Phones with Marvell in China." Currently, only Qualcomm is producing chips for Windows Phone devices, although competitor ST-Ericsson recently announced its own plans to get in on the action. Marvell's strength in producing "quality low-cost devices," is a good fit for Windows Phone Tango’s expected focus on reduced spec requirements (e.g., only 256MB of RAM). Nokia’s already strong position in ...

Google forced to pay $650,000 in damages for anti-competitive behavior with Maps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The French Tribunal de Commerce has ordered Google to pay €500,000 (around $650,000) in damages to Bottin Cartographes, a company specializing in creating location maps for businesses. The Parisian court upheld an unfair competition complaint lodged by Bottin against Google France and parent Google Inc. for providing its Google Maps API to businesses free of charge. Google only charges businesses to use its API if they have high traffic, or charge users for access to their site.
Bottin Cartographes first filed a complaint in 2009, and argued that Google was damaging its business by running Maps at a loss until it controlled the market.
