Facebook IPO’s biggest winner may be artist David Choe
Like UnlikeBack when Facebook was limited to its first couple of campuses here in the USA, artist David Choe was commissioned to paint their interiors in exchange for stock options instead of cash. As you can imagine, this was the correct choice made by the artist to choose the stocks and wait this long to cash them in, because instead of the “thousands” of dollars he would have gotten back in 2005 and 2007, he now has right around $200 million USD in stock value. That’s some major cash for a fellow who, though he certainly isn’t doing bad on his own, will be blowing this cash on some fabulous swag in the near future.

Lunch hours may never feel safe again. That is, if you have a Mac running Lion / FileVault 2, like leaving your computer around, or have unscrupulous colleagues. Data recovery firm Passware claims its "Forensic" edition software can decrypt files protected by FileVault 2 in just 40 minutes -- whether it's "letmein" or "H4x0rl8t0rK1tt3h" you chose to stand in its way. Using live-memory analysis over firewire, the encryption key can be accessed from FileVault's partition, gifting the pilferer privy access to keychain files and login data -- and therefore pretty much everything else. PSA: PlayStation Network down for maintenance again from 6AM-midnight PT
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 3
In what's becoming an increasingly regular occurrence, the PlayStation Network will be down for maintenance this Thursday. The downtime will last from 6AM til midnight PT, or 9AM-3AM Verge time (ET), which is five hours longer than the last period of outage. It won't affect online gaming if you make sure to sign in beforehand, but the PlayStation Store on all devices, account registration and management, Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services on PlayStation Home, and web-based login will all be inaccessible. As ever, Sony is staying mum on what behind-the-scenes enhancements the outage should allow, but it recommends following the PlayStation Twitter feed for updates.

FBI spyware not Skype responsible for spilling MegaUpload secrets
Like UnlikeFBI investigators may have infected MegaUpload‘s computers with spyware so as to monitor Skype and email messaging, it’s been suggested, with sources within the Microsoft-owned VoIP company claiming it was not asked to turn over conversation logs. Multiple chat records were included by the FBI within its case against MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom and other employees at the file-sharing site, dating back as much as five years, though exactly how the US government acquired them is unclear. Sources within Skype tell CNET that no approach was made to them to release private logs.

Sony posts huge $2 billion net loss in Q3, cuts forecasts
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony
Kazuo Hirai was appointed Sony’s new chief executive on Wednesday and one day later, the company reported a wider than expected loss in the third fiscal quarter of 2011 that sent its stock tumbling more than 6% in early trading. The firm posted an operating loss of $1.2 billion on $23.4 billion in revenue, down more than 17% compared to the same quarter in fiscal 2010, and its net loss for the quarter totaled $2 billion. Sony also said it now anticipates a full-year loss of $2.9 billion, more than twice its earlier projection of $1.2 billion. The flooding in Thailand was seen as contributing to Sony’s poor performance in the third quarter, but the company noted that its hefty losses were “pr...

Apple iPad 3 coming late March?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 3
The next generation of the Apple iPad could arrive in stores late March, nearly a year after the launch of the iPad 2, if we are to believe a report by Japanese blog Macotakara that says Apple will hold a media event in the beginning of March. The event is expected to bring us an official announcement of the third iPad.
Manufacturers such as Foxconn and Pegatron have allegedly started production of the new tablet. Foxconn is responsible for an overwhelming 85% of all future iPads made:
“According to Chinese source, Foxconn Technology and Pegatron Technology started next generation of iPad assembly with Foxconn bearing 85% and Pegatron taking 15% of the production load like as iPhone 4S. Acce...

White HTC Sensation with Android 4.0 ICS coming March 1 (Update: No ICS)
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleSensation XLAndroid 4.0
HTC has announced that it will offer its Sensation smartphone in "ice white" come March 1. What is more interesting, however, is that this version of the Sensation (which was originally announced way back in April 2011) will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich already installed, making it the first HTC device with Android 4.0 on the market. The new ice white Sensation was announced in the Netherlands, but we would be surprised if HTC didn't bring it to every market that the original Sensation is available in. HTC isn't stiffing existing Sensation owners either, as it says an upgrade to Android 4.0 will be available for their handsets soon.
Update: We have been informed by HTC that the o...

Google reveals Bouncer security for Android Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
If you’ve watched headlines over the last year, you know there is more than one opinion on how big of a problem malware is on the Android Market. Companies that make (and sell) security apps tend to trumpet the biggest numbers they can find, while some other analysts and especially Google have downplayed the risk, especially compared to traditional PCs.
It turns out that Google’s confidence wasn’t just bravado, they actually have been working behind the scenes to make the Android Market more secure, without incurring the prolonged app testing times (and expense) that other app stores with higher walls suffer. The result of their work was revealed today in a service they are calling Bouncer.

Fragmentation still plagues Android, as only 1% of all devices carry ICS 4.0
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
Well, the numbers are in for the different types of Android versions running on all devices, and the results are disappointing because it shows that fragmentation isn’t going anywhere.
First, Google released data (below) that showed 60 percent of users are running some sort of version of Gingerbread, and only 1 percent of users were operating on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). Google’s stats conflict with those of research firm, Localytics. Localytics has come up with data that shows a full 73 percent of Android devices (smartphone and tablets) run Gingerbread, not the 60 percent Google claims.

Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S on AT&T finding Google Wallet available
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAT&TGoogleNexus SGALAXY Nexus
There hasn't been any official announcement, but suddenly today the Google Wallet app has started showing up for certain devices on a specific carrier, and amazingly enough, the carrier is one of the major backers of the ISIS NFC payment system.
That carrier is of course AT&T and the devices are the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S. Google Wallet had come up as unavailable for users before, but now AT&T customers with those devices can get the app. It was tested by both Droid Life and Engadget, and Engadget even found that if you swap an AT&T SIM into a GSM Galaxy Nexus, you can download the Wallet app, and it will still work even after swapping back to a T-Mobile SIM card.

Qualcomm performs the first successful voice-over-LTE call with handover to WCDMA
Like UnlikeVerizon, AT&T and any other LTE providers currently rely on 3G networks to carry voice phone calls. In the future, carriers hope to use voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology, and Qualcomm recently reached an important milestone on the road to making VoLTE a reality. Qualcomm announced on Thursday that the company had successfully completed the “first voice call handover from an LTE mobile network to a WCDMA network using Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC).” The company, while working with Ericsson, used its own MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 chipset to power the test hardware, and the technology will be demonstrated live at this month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. While we're still looking to a March arrival, if you happen to live close to a Microsoft retail store, you can pre-order one of these fine handsets for yourself today. We reached out to the folks in Redmond to confirm the news, who tell us that a Lumia 900 -- which has yet to be blessed with an official price -- can be secured for just $25.
