Apple's iTV launch reportedly hampered by display availability

Apple has been widely rumored to be readying a Siri-enabled television for release this year, but a new report claims component availability issues will prevent the highly anticipated “iTV” from launching in the first half. Citing unnamed sources within Apple’s supply chain, DigiTimes on Friday reports that Sharp, rumored to have been contracted to supply display panels for Apple’s debut HDTV, is not yet ready to ship the indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) panels Apple will use in its iTV. According to the site’s sources, upcoming HDTV models from Samsung and LG will occupy much of the OLED panel capacity during the first half, so Apple has chosen to instead utilize IGZO panels. Sharp is repor...

Dropbox offers up to 5GB of free space to anyone willing to go beta

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Here's some good news for all you Dropboxers out there: the company is offering a bundle of free storage space to anyone who tries the beta version of its new Experimental software. It's really quite simple: just download the test program, upload a photo, and instantly get 500MB of free storage. Upload another photo or video, and an additional 500MB will magically appear at your doorstep. The idea is to test out the beta software's new photo and video uploader, which automatically pulls media from any camera, smartphone or SD card and drops it in the cloud. Free space is limited to 5GB per user, and there's an inherent risk to testing any unfinished product, but those willing to make the lea...

Skype for Nokia Belle phones is out

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Skype has updated its app for Symbian Belle devices (version 2.1.23) like the Nokia 700, 701, 603 and many others that will get the new OS via a firmware update. The popular VoIP application now comes with Belle-like look and feel, while the overall performance has been significantly improved.
You know that Skype is a must-have app on your smartphone, right? So if you have a compatible device, get it now. Sure there are other VoIP solutions out there, some of which are even cheaper to use. However, with most folks running Skype on their mobile phones, tablets and computer – you’ll need it to be able to talk to them for free (as in Skype-to-Skype calls).

iOS apps crash more than Android apps, study shows

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Apps running on Apple’s iOS devices crash more frequently than Android apps according to a new study preformed by mobile app monitoring company Crittercism. The data, which was collected between December 1st and 15th last year, spans 23 different versions of iOS and 33 different Android versions. The latest version of iOS (5.0.1) leads all others with 28.64% of all crashes, Forbes reports. The OS build is still relatively new, however, so much of the poor performance could be attributed to apps that haven’t yet been properly updated. Even still, there are older version of iOS that have surprisingly high percentages — iOS 4.2.1 was responsible for 12.64% of crashes, iOS 4.3.3 had 10.66% and i...

Enermax DreamBass AP001 improves laptop audio output

Posted on Feb 03, 2012 by MG15

Filed in: Amplifiers

Well, ehm Enermax is releasing the DreamBass AP001, a new USB device that seeks to improve the audio capabilities of your laptop. It's only for headphones and microphones though, it won't do anything for your internal speakers. It's based on a VIA VT1620A USB 2.0 2-channel HD audio CODEC for stereo output with 24-bit resolution and 96 kHz sample-rate. It has a signal-noise ratio of 80~90 dBA, which is not much of a departure from most laptops' HDA CODECs, if it isn't for the MOSFET-based amplifier circuit packed into the DreamBass AP001, that's capable of 80Hz/+6dB Bass. It has a 3.5 mm stereo jack and mic input. Enermax also has a variant called the AP001E, which includes earphones that hav...

Filed in: CamerasPentaxK-01

Pentax has formally announced the K-01 K-mount mirrorless interchangable lens camera and a revised 40mm F2.8 pancake lens to match. Built around a 16MP APS-C sensor, the camera can mount most of the lenses the company has ever made. It features sensor-shift image stabilization, a 920k dot rear LCD and can shoot at up to 6 frames per second. The rather interesting design is the work of respected product designer Marc Newson and features a logo of his signature on the base of the camera. The K-01 (which the company says should be pronounced 'kay-zero-one'), will cost around $749 body-only and $899 with the 'XS' version of the 40mm lens. Our biggest concern, based on its dependance on contrast ...

If You Have Comcast Email, You Could Be A Terrorist

Posted on Feb 03, 2012 by MG15

Hey, are you "overly concerned about privacy" online or use anonymizers and Web portals? Do you like to check your ISP-provided email account on the road? How about talking to your cohorts in PC games? Yeah? Well, here's some bad news: according to the FBI and DoJ, there's a good chance that you're a terrorist if you do any of that in an Internet café -- and they encourage others to track your license plate, ethnicity, name and more if you exhibit any of those "potential indicators." Slashdot pointed us towards the Public Intelligence website, which first reported on the issue. Public Intelligence hosts a copy of the cyber-terrorist flyer that the DoJ/FBI created (PDF) as part of their "Com...

Arctic Cooling Announces New AMD Trinity APU-Powered HTPCs

Arctic Cooling Announces New AMD Trinity APU-Powered HTPCs

Posted on Feb 03, 2012 by MG15

Arctic Cooling may have earned its reputation on the back of its cooling products -- hence its name -- but late last year, it introduced a line of home theater PCs based on Intel's Atom chip. It must have been pretty well-received, because Arctic recently announced it was launching a new line of HTPCs. Why is that notable? Because the Arctic MC101 line will be powered by AMD's next-gen Trinity APU, combination CPU/GPU chips that haven't even hit the streets yet.

Cooler Master Celebrates 20th Anniversary By Slashing Price of CM Storm Trooper Case

If Cooler Master was a person rather than a company that provides PC supplies, it'd almost be old enough to drink: this year marks its 20th anniversary of existence. And rather than just patting itself on its imaginary back and sending out press releases touting its own awesomeness, Cooler Master's tossing a little something back to the community. The company just announced that for a short time, it's shaving nearly a quarter off the price of LAN-friendly CM Storm Trooper full-tower case, bringing it down from $190 to $150.
