Sprint agrees to $1 billion credit deal to buy Ericsson network equipment

Sprint has announced a new $1 billion credit agreement that will be used to purchase equipment from Ericsson for the carrier's Network Vision project. Deutsche Bank leads the group of banks that will be providing the credit facility, and the purchased equipment will help Sprint build out its LTE network, for which the carrier was just recently granted permission to use its 800MHz spectrum. The network is expected to go live in six markets by the middle of this year, with the full rollout due in 2013. Apple’s engineers custom designed the A4, A5, and A5X chips that are found inside their products. Samsung puts their own Exynos chips inside their smartphones and tablets. Back in February of this year, Huawei announced that they’re going to fit a custom chip inside their flagship Android device, the Ascend D1 Quad. This begs the question, when are others going to get in on the custom action? Until now, the way voice has worked on handsets with a 4G LTE air interface has been, well, interesting. That is to say, thus far all voice calls haven't been over 4G LTE but conventional circuit-switched (as opposed to packet-switched) 2G or 3G networks like CDMA2000 1x in 3GPP2 land, or WCDMA/GSM in 3GPP land. For example, on Verizon LTE the handset has a second radio always camping 1x for voice and SMS, and on AT&T LTE the handset falls back from LTE to WCDMA for the voice transaction. Ericsson predicts 5 billion mobile data users by 2016

We all know that mobile is big business and that usage is exploding all around the globe, but Ericsson decided to put some numbers on just how crazy it's all going to get. The company has a number of predictions based on its Traffic and Market Data report, which point to mobile data usage increasing quite a lot in just the next 5 years.
Ericsson is annoyingly vague about how it came up with the data, citing nebulous "measurements" which were "recorded over several years". That doesn't help us in believing the predictions, but the numbers themselves are pretty intriguing. Ericsson trials LTE Advanced with 10x the speed in Sweden

Ericsson has demonstrated the next generation of LTE networks in Sweden that promises 10 times the speed of the already fast LTE that we know today.
Called LTE Advanced, the new network uses larger chunks of carrier spectrum and extended multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) functionality to hit speeds of up to 900Mbps in the trials. The demonstration used 60MHz allocations of spectrum, compared to the 20MHz that is currently used by LTE today.
