Rogers on Monday announced two new LTE devices that will offer even faster speeds than earlier 4G modems on its network. The company will soon launch the Sierra Wireless AirCard 330U LTE Rocket stick as well as the Sierra Wireless AirCard 763S LTE Rocket mobile hotspot. Both devices utilize the 2600MHz spectrum and will offer LTE download speeds of up to 40 Mbps, compared to the 12-25Mbps offered by Rogers’s earlier devices. ”We are thrilled to offer Canada’s fastest LTE devices on Canada’s fastest and largest LTE network,” said Rogers Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer John Boynton. “We were the first to launch an LTE network in Canada and we have invested in the network t...

Google testing unknown 'entertainment device' in employees' homes

Google testing unknown 'entertainment device' in employees' homes

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

A new Google-made "entertainment device" that can connect to home electronics via Wi-Fi is now being tested in employees' homes. An FCC filing from December shows that the company requested permission to test about 250 of the experimental units in four cities from mid-January to July of this year. Users will apparently "connect their device to home Wi-Fi networks and use Bluetooth to connect to other home electronics equipment."
We can't be sure what the filing refers to, but it sounds very similar to Android@Home, which would connect home appliances like lights or washing machines to smartphone applications. Android@Home was announced last year, but we haven't heard much about the service l...

Creative pumps out $99 HN-900 noise-canceling headphones

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Fact: not everyone's willing to pay a premium to enhance their personal listening experience. Fortunately for those of you who like noise cancellation and a flush bank account, Creative's just taken the wraps off its $99 headset that'll do the trick. The HN-900 offers great features -- aside from the low price tag -- such as 40-hours of active noise canceling powered by some AAA juice (for the times when you feel like ignoring the world), 40mm Neodymium drivers, and a built-in microphone to help with making and answering calls, just to highlight a few. Naturally, with such a stout feature set and low price, the headphones are selling like hotcakes and are currently out of stock. That said, y...

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman says the company's soon-to-be open source WebOS software will eventually be better than both the Android and iOS platforms.
HP will launch the first version of the reimagined operating system in September this year after deciding to commit the storied software to the open source community.
Whitman said the result will prove to be superior to the 'closed' Apple iOS ecosystem and the undeniably 'fragmented' Android platform.
She also confirmed that the company will re-enter the tablet market, following the HP TouchPad debacle of 2011.
An open and closed case
In an interview with CRN, she said: "There is a clear vision of what we're trying to accomplish.
"There w...

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Anonymous targeted the website of the Greek Justice Ministry this morning as the leaderless group kicked off a day of protests against the financially embattled European country for its decision to the sign the controversial ACTA treaty. The so-called hacktivists replaced the Justice Ministry website with a video message to Greece alongside threats to wreck havoc with another 300 media websites and a direct warning to the government.

Dropbox for Android beta lands with auto camera uploads

Dropbox for Android beta lands with auto camera uploads

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Dropbox has taken off the covers of an all-new version of its cloud-based solution for Android devices: the Experimental Android Forum Build 2.0.9. Catchy name huh?
The beta release brings with it a number of key new features, most notably the addition of a Camera Upload function. This allows you to have your smartphone or tablet's photos or videos beamed directly into the cloud without your having to mess around with an upload manager.
What's more, you'll get 500MB of free Dropbox storage once your first picture hits the cloud. Files are limited to 180MB so you won't be able to fire up your home-made HD movies if they are too long. But, if they're nice and quick and get to the climax sooner...

Facebook Could Jumpstart HTML5 Platform With App Bookmarks On News Feed

Facebook Could Jumpstart HTML5 Platform With App Bookmarks On News Feed

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Facebook’s late-comer HTML5 mobile app platform lags way behind the Apple App Store and Android Marketplace. Yesterday I spotted Facebook’s latest effort to catch up — a test showing bookmarks for third-party applications at the top of the mobile news feed. Currently, Facebook buries HTML5 app bookmarks at the bottom of its mobile site’s pull-out navigation menu, and only shows them in the iOS or Android Facebook app’s search bar.
Placing them much more prominently atop the mobile home page could increase engagement — the first step in attracting developers to the platform and earning money on in-app purchases.

Nokia Lumia 800 sells out in Ireland

Nokia Lumia 800 sells out in Ireland

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

After going on sale on the 1st February 2012 exclusive on Vodafone Ireland, the Nokia Lumia 800 is now officially out of stock on the network.
While the event is not as indicative of strong demand as if it sold out in the first few days, it does mean that there is not a huge inventory of Nokia Lumia 800s hanging around, and should be good news for Nokia’s Q1 2012 numbers.

Huawei MediaPad hits AT&T's tablet offering

Huawei MediaPad hits AT&T's tablet offering

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

AT&T is adding another tablet to its portfolio – Huawei MediaPad, which is already available in the U.S. as T-Mobile Springboard. Unfortunately, the device AT&T is selling comes with Honeycomb (rather than Ice Cream Sandwich) on board, though we’re sure Android 4.0 update will be released shortly. Moreover, the press release doesn’t mention multiple color options, hinting us the only version the carrier will offer is silver (which BTW looks pretty cool to me).
AT&T has already started selling the MediaPad to its enterprise users at varying price points depending on the business account. As for consumers, guess they’ll have to wait for few more days — I couldn’t find the tablet on AT&T’s webs...

Galaxy Nexus and other CDMA devices removed from Google Support pages

Galaxy Nexus and other CDMA devices removed from Google Support pages

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Some of you may have noticed that the Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus is no longer listed as a supported, official developer device by Google. Despite rumors to the contrary, it doesn't appear this has anything to do with the kerfuffle over Wallet, but instead centers around technical issues relating to the APK files required for CDMA connectivity and the signing of those libraries. Other devices have also disappeared from the support pages, including the Nexus S 4G and the Verizon-branded Xoom. Google has posted an update explaining that, "for various technical reasons" CDMA telephony is handled by binaries provided by the carrier in newer devices. The result is different signatures bei...

Mozilla developing push notification system for Firefox

Mozilla developing push notification system for Firefox

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Mozilla is developing a push notification system for the company’s Firefox Web browser. The system will allow users to receive notifications from any website, even if the site is not open in a tab or window. The system will also be able to relay push notifications to mobile devices. Mozilla is seemingly looking to close the gap between desktop Web apps and native mobile apps, which utilize push notification systems on a number of mobile platforms. “Push notifications are a way for websites to send small messages to users when the user is not on the site,” said Mozilla developer Jeff Balogh on the company’s blog. “iOS and Android devices already support their own push notification services, b...

More smartphones were shipped than PCs in 2011

More smartphones were shipped than PCs in 2011

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Canalys research firm issued a report today that makes us all think back to our very first time getting a blue screen of death on a PC. According to combined statistics from 2011, manufacturers shipped more smartphones than computers in 2011 – 488 million smartphones hit shelves last year, while only 414.6 million PCs did. Though tablets were supposed to reign in the “post-PC” era, the PC numbers do factor in tablet shipments.
“Smart phone shipments overtaking those of client PCs should be seen as a significant milestone,” VP and Principal Analyst of Canalys, Chris Jones, commented. “In the space of a few years, smart phones have grown from being a niche product segment at the high-end of th...

US government and military getting Android phones

US government and military getting Android phones

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Security is one of the things that Android competitors always want to take a swipe at, but if any organizations takes security seriously it would be the US government and US military, and it looks like both will be getting Android devices pretty soon.
We've already seen the Pentagon approve one single customized Android device for use, and now CNN is reporting that US troops may be getting Android devices as soon as this year. It seems that the government has been testing out smartphones for a while and Android fits the needs best because it can be so easily customized. Apple reportedly wouldn't allow the government access to the iOS source code, so the necessary tweaks and customizations w...

Motorola ATRIX 2 sees a new software update, but it's not for ICS

Posted on Feb 06, 2012 by MG1

Let’s get it out of the way, it’s not the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update that some handset owners are dreaming about in their sleep, but rather, the Motorola ATRIX 2 is seeing nothing more than a maintenance update.
Requiring owners to download the update via a Wi-Fi connection, the software update brings forth some new enhancements, tweaks, and fixes that will no doubt extend the handset’s functionality even further.
Specifically, it features improvements to the performance of the camera, the installation of the Google Music app, enhancements to deliver greater device security, addition of emergency alerts for things such as Hurricane warning notifications, improvements to the keyboa...
