Netflix brings DVD only plan back for $7.99 monthly
Like UnlikeThe fury that Netflix generated when it axed the DVD only plan a while back was swift and harsh. There were many angry people that didn’t want streaming and only wanted mail order DVD rentals. Netflix has announced officially that the DVD only plan is back and users can sign up for it right now for $7.99 monthly.
Eligible customers can get a free one-month trial of the service to see if they like it. Netflix has a library of 100,000 DVD titles and had previously wanted to shift the bulk of its users over to streaming. It’s easier and likely cheaper for Netflix to have everyone on streaming rather than some using mail-order DVDs with the costs of postage and processing.

Mountain Lion ditches older Macs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMAC OS X 10.8
Apple Mountain Lion will force many Mac models into legacy status, with no support for the upcoming OS X refresh for numerous pre-2007 MacBooks, MacBook Pros and desktops. The minimum hardware requirements of Mountain Lion - which we previewed comprehensively yesterday - apparently count out multiple models using integrated Intel GPUs, so TUAW‘s developer source says. That means, if you have a pre-unibody MacBook or the original MacBook Air, there’s no Mountain Lion for you.
Those notebooks using Intel GMA 950 or Intel GMA X3100 GPUs are apparently out of luck, but the list also includes the 8-core Mac Pro from 2007 and the mid-2007 Mac mini. However, if you have one of the following models ...

HP Z1 Workstation AIO has a 27-inch flip-up screen, lets you easily open its chassis
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersHPZ1
It looks like HP isn't satisfied with its current workstation lineup: the company has added an all-in-one to the powerful, business-class series. It's called the Z1 Workstation, and other than desktop-grade silicon, the AIO makes a bit of a statement with its chassis. Sure, it is a bit chunky, but it makes up for that by being easy-to-access and customizable. The Z1's 27-inch IPS 2560 x 1440 display snaps open like a lid, leaving its 4 PCI express card slots (one full-sized 16x), three hard drive bays, and four memory slots laid bare for you to tinker with. The base configuration is expected to arrive in April for $1,899 with a 3.33GHz Core i3-2120 and integrated graphics. Of course, being a...

Rumor: iPad 3 to use new Apple A5X chip, have 8 MP camera
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 3
Two new iPad 3 rumors sprang up over the weekend, rumors which we wish would stop already since we’ll know everything there is to know about the iPad 3 in less than a month. Anyway, the first rumor is from a Chinese website called WeiPhone, which managed to get a photo of what’s supposedly going to be the iPad 3 motherboard. On said motherboard is a massive chip labeled A5X, as in the successor to the A5 that’s currently inside the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. The folks at MacRumors took a close look at the markings on the chip and discovered that it was manufactured in late November. They also found the technical model number of this chip in question is S5L8945X. To put that into some perspective,...

Harvard researchers highlight robots made from DNA
Like UnlikeScientists have managed to create a robot created entirely out of DNA, an advancement that could make it possible to effectively kill cancer cells or other diseases that don’t have a simple cure. The microscopic robots use incredibly sophisticated directives that seek out specific cells. Then, based on the robot’s programming the cells are either destroyed or reprogrammed.
So far the robotic creation, which is featured in the latest issue of the journal Science, has been tested in laboratory settings where it was able to successfully kill a cancerous cell within a petri dish. The next step, say scientists, is to make the leap to animals. This involves making the robot even more powerful so i...

This update decreases the amount of time it takes to complete these processes and also adds new uploading options.

Mozilla shows off Boot2Gecko mobile framework
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating Systems
Last July, Mozilla acknowledged that it was planning to build a mobile operating system. Today, the non-profit development organization that created the Firefox browser and Thunderbird email system provided an initial view of what that foundation, named Boot2Gecko (BTG), will look like. Mozilla is promising to demo it at the upcoming Mobile World Congress later this month.
Mozilla is basing the product's architecture on standards-based components, especially HTML5 and JavaScript. The user interface, Gaia, will be incorporated into Firefox as well.
Mozilla has launched an initiative to create open APIs to add functionality to the OS. These would include taking pictures, dialing the phone, sho...

Intel may postpone mass shipments of Ivy Bridge processors
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUIntel
Intel recently notified partners of its plans to postpone mass shipments of the company’s Ivy Bridge processors, reports DigiTimes. The company still plans to announce new products that will ship in small volume in April according to the report, although mass shipments are not expect to occur until after June. The supposed delay comes as a number of notebook vendors are seeing weakening sales from the diminishing global economy and other factors. Both vendors and Intel are said to have large inventories of Sandy Bridge processors, so the delay could be seen as a way to minimize the impact of leftover CPUs.

'Anonymous' hacks two more U.S. government websites
Like UnlikeMembers from the notorious hacktivist collective “Anonymous Operations” have reportedly claimed responsibility for hacking two more government websites following the takedown of the Central Intelligence Agency’s website last week. The Associated Press on Friday reported that Anonymous had breached the United States Federal Trade Commission’s consumer protection business center website as well as a National Consumer Protection Week website. Both sites were temporarily replaced by a “violent German-language video” focused on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. ACTA, which has been signed by a number of countries including the U.S. and Canada, aims to put forth international legal guidelin...

Google may face FTC investigation over Safari privacy scandal
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Earlier, news spread quickly that Google was caught bypassing Apple’s privacy settings to track iOS users with mobile Safari. Not surprisingly, the top Consumer Watchdog thinks Google is deceiving users with these questionable practices and has asked the FTC to investigate.
“Google has clearly engaged in ‘unfair and deceptive’ practices,” said John M. Simpson, Consumer Watchdog’s Privacy Project director. “They have been lying about how people can protect their privacy in their instructions about how to opt out of receiving targeted advertising.”Anyway, we actually gave you this story a couple days ago from the perspective of Apple's huge sales, which still is a pretty impressive story. Opera Software acquires two mobile ad agencies
Like UnlikeIn its effort to grow beyond the mobile web browser business, Opera acquired AdMarvel back in January 2010. Obviously that’s not enough for the Opera Mini maker as they bought two other mobile ad agencies, Mobile Theory and 4th Screen Advertising, to even better monetize the traffic that flows through Opera browsers.
Mobile Theory is a San Francisco-based company that covers the U.S. mobile ad market from its offices in the New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco. 4th Screen Advertising, on the other hand, is focused on serving the European mobile advertising markets, based in London.

Samsung Epic 4G Touch Ice Cream Sandwich update in works
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleEpic 4G TouchAndroid 4.0
We all know Samsung will rollout the Android 4.0 update for its super-popular Galaxy S II smartphone later this year. However, Sprint customers may be wondering whether they’ll have to wait longer, since their particular version of the device (Epic 4G Touch) is specific, made to sing along the carrier’s WiMAX network. Plus, Sprint (and other mobile operators for that matter) always want to test the phone software thoroughly before releasing it to the general public, the process that usually ends-up in prolonged wait time for the end-users.
