These pirate ships won't sink

These pirate ships won't sink

Posted on Feb 17, 2012 by MG1

It's been a rum old week for the pirate business.
The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) shut down music site RnBXclusive.com for sharing music "stolen from artists", replacing it with a warning that "SOCA has the capability to monitor and investigate you" that was presumably written by Robocop.
While SOCA was throwing its weight around, the world's largest Bittorrent database, BTJunkie, decided it would shut down before the copyright cops came a-knocking.
And then The Pirate Bay decided it was going to get out of the torrent business.

European smartphone users can expect to have access to 4G wireless networks sometime in 2013. The European Parliament has approved the commencement of a 4G roll-out utilizing the 800MHz band that is currently used by certain broadcasters still using analogue prior to the finalization of a digital switchover due at the end of 2012. The 800MHz band has been identified as one of the more effective frequencies for 4G networks as it can send data over longer distances and offers better in door reception.
‘By this decision on radio spectrum policy we are taking the necessary steps in order to regain a European global leadership regarding mobile telecoms,’ reads a statement issued by the European P...

Kodak gets court approval to borrow $950 million, end theater sponsorship

Kodak took another step along the road to recovery yesterday, after receiving court approval to borrow $950 million in restructuring funds. Nearly a month after the camera maker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, US Bankruptcy Judge Allen Gropper granted Kodak's request on Thursday, allowing the company to continue operations during its ongoing transition. Gropper's decision, handed down in a Manhattan court, follows a series of negotiations between Kodak and its lenders, and adds an extra $300 million to the $650 million awarded during January's Chapter 11 filing. The company is also allowed to end its sponsorship of the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, after successfully arguing that doing so w...

Cisco blasts EC over Microsoft Skype openness

Cisco blasts EC over Microsoft Skype openness

Cisco has taken time out from axing unpopular and overpriced teleconferencing systems to complain about Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype, challenging the EC with demands for greater priority for open video standards. Although Cisco doesn’t oppose the acquisition, video conferencing chief Marthin De Beer wrote on the company’s official blog, it does believe the European Commission shirked on insisting Microsoft must adopt open standards that won’t prevent rival services from intercommunicating.
“Imagine how difficult it would be if you were limited to calling people who only use the same carrier or if your phone could only call certain brands and not others” De Beer suggests. Cisco’s fear, it...

Verizon's Droid Bionic drops to $99, loses bundled microSD card

Verizon's Droid Bionic drops to $99, loses bundled microSD card

Posted on Feb 17, 2012 by MG1

Last month, Verizon dropped the price on the Droid RAZR while removing the bundled 16GB microSD card and now it's doing the same thing with Motorola's Droid Bionic. The handset will be available for $99.99 on contract (down from $299.99 when we reviewed it in September) and features 16GB of internal storage, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 4.3-inch qHD display. We liked the Droid Bionic, but Verizon subscribers might also want to take a look at the 8GB iPhone 4 and theSamsung Stratosphere (for the hardware keyboard people out there) at the same price point before taking the plunge.

Google PageRank algorithm could help medical breakthroughs

Google PageRank algorithm could help medical breakthroughs

Chemists at Washington State University have come up with a way to use Google's PageRank algorithm to more accurately model water molecule behaviour.
Chemistry professor Aurora Clark and her colleagues Barbara Logan Mooney and L. Rene Corrales have documented their findings in a paper called moleculaRnetworks, published in the Journal of Computational Chemistry.
PageRank is an algorithm that Google uses to determine a site's popularity based upon the number of links to it from other sites and how influential those linking pages are themselves.
Everybody needs good neighbours
Professor Clark's technique uses the same algorithm, but instead ranks water molecules by the number and strength of h...

Apple iPad dominates South Korea with 80% market share

Apple iPad dominates South Korea with 80% market share

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsAppleiPad

South Korea, the country that Samsung and LG call home, apparently doesn’t care about either of those two companies’ Android tablets. According to The Korea Herald, sales of Apple’s iPad recently surpassed 1 million units, which to put into some perspective, means Apple owns somewhere between 70% to 80% of the tablet market in that country. Assuming that 75% is the real figure, that would mean Samsung’s and LG’s combined tablet sales don’t even add up to 350,000 units. Kind of pathetic when you think about it, but then again we’ve played with Android and we can see why it’s struggling in the market. Now all that being said, let us remind you that we filed a report a little over a week ago th...

UK's SOCA seizes domain of popular music blog, rnbxclusive.com

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

The UK’s Serious, Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) took down hip-hop news and track exchange website rnbxclusive.com yesterday as part of a criminal investigation into allegedly defrauding the music industry. The site started in 1998 and has since become a popular R&B and hip-hop blog online with over a quarter of a million fans on Facebook.
It appears the UK is following in the footsteps of previous US DHS/ICE seizures with one of their own. The process is less involved here though, with Nominet (who handle co.uk domains) usually just requiring a request from UK law enforcement to seize a domain, rarely with any court interaction during the process. This is, however, the first non-Nominet list...

With iAd still struggling, Apple again slashes minimum spend

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

In an effort to attract more advertisers and to compete with major players like Google, Apple has once again slashed the minimum spend required by campaigns on its iAd mobile advertising platform. The figure has now dropped to $100,000 according to a report from AdAge, just 10% of Apple’s original requirement. The Cupertino-based company initially required advertisers to spend a minimum of $1 million per campaign on its iAd platform, eventually cutting the price in half to $500,000 and then settling on $300,000. In addition to the reduced spending fee, Apple is looking to woo app developers by reducing the company’s cut of iAd profits from 40% to 30%. Apple has been losing share in the mobil...

Windows Phone Lumia 610 may be key to Tango update puzzle

Before a big release of a new bit of software, especially in this mobile landscape we’re currently reporting on all the time now, there are a set of puzzle pieces, otherwise known as leaks, that can be compiled to create a relatively clear picture of what the full release will bring. What we’re seeing in the lead up to Mobile World Congress 2012 for Microsoft’s Windows Phone is a set of tips that lead us to believe that the key to the mystery that is “Windows Phone Tango” is none other than the Nokia Lumia 610, an unannounced device set for release at the end of this month, and the software that’ll come out first upon it: Tango.

Sony finalizes divorce with Ericsson, renames itself Sony Mobile Communications

More than half of America's married couples will tell you, breaking up is hard. Hard and expensive. After living in denial, dodging rumors and eventually coming to terms with the inevitable, Sony has finally taken over Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson's 50-percent stake in the pair's former joint venture, a move that was earlier reported to have cost €1.05 billion ($1.37 billion) to complete. The now fully Sony owned Sony Ericsson will be renamed Sony Mobile Communications, though a few of the outfit's already announced children are keeping their papa's name. Hit the break for Sony's small press release.
