OS X Mountain Lion to skip USB option due to lack of need

OS X Mountain Lion to skip USB option due to lack of need

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Apple stated Friday that the launch of OS X Mountain Lion would be truly download-only. The Mac maker briefed Pocket-lint that it wouldn't stock versions preloaded on USB drives like it has with the current Lion release. Offering a physical option was an "interesting test," but the Mac App Store was "just fine" in practice for getting a copy, Apple said.
Not mentioned was whether or not users could still create their own disk image and load that on a USB drive or a disc. The options were never official and will likely still be an option given that the Lion installer was ultimately a package with a typical install image inside.

Apple settles 'Antennagate' class action lawsuit: $15 or a bumper case for US iPhone 4 purchasers

Apple settles 'Antennagate' class action lawsuit: $15 or a bumper case for US iPhone 4 purchasers

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

A settlement in an "Antennagate" class action lawsuit that was filed against Apple in July of 2010 has finally received preliminary approval. The suit sought damages for owners of the original iPhone 4 in the wake of Antennagate, contending that "the case and antenna design has led to a substantial degradation in signal quality and dropped calls when the phone is used in a normal and foreseeable fashion by users." According to CNET, the settlement will mean one of two options for all iPhone 4 owners in the US: a $15 check or a free bumper case. It's not yet known if customers who had previously taken Apple up on its original free case offer will be eligible.

Google's Dart lands in Chromium tech preview

Google's Dart lands in Chromium tech preview

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Leaves weren't the only things flying around Mountain View last Autumn if you remember, Google also unleashed its Dart programming language. Now, developers can get their hands on a tech preview version of Chromium, with the Dart virtual machine baked right in. There are Mac and Linux binaries available today, but no details about other platforms (ahem Windows) at this time. The preview lets you run your programs directly on the Dart VM, skipping the separate compilation stage. While it's just for developers at the minute, there are plans to include this in standard Chrome releases in the future. Aim at the source link after the break for the full details.

Megaupload charged again over website copying

Megaupload charged again over website copying

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

The charges against Megaupload grew late Thursday after it was targeted with additional and potentially more difficult to overcome charges. US officials accused Megaupload of directly producing copies of content from other sites, such as videos on YouTube, with the intent of redistributing it without permission. The claims vary from those that had focused on allegations of more conventional media piracy.
Along with the new charges, evidence also emerged supporting claims that Megaupload was primarily a one-way host than sharing. About 66.6 million actual users existed, or a third of the 180 million Megaupload claimed, and only 5.86 million were known to have uploaded files.

Twitter opens up its ad platform to 10,000 more users

Twitter opens up its ad platform to 10,000 more users

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Twitter's self-service advertising platform launched in December last year, allowing around 100 big-name accounts to post promoted tweets to the microblogging service. Today, this number has been expanded by 100 times, with 10,000 accounts now eligible to create the adverts. The selection of which accounts the service is open to isn't arbitrary, though: the wider rollout is in itself a sponsorship deal with American Express, and the selected accounts either use or accept AmEx for payments. New advertisers will also receive $100 advertising credit to begin their campaign.
Whether the advertising platform is a success for Twitter won't be revealed until the company decides to announce numbers ...

FCC rules VoIP providers must report outages in effort to improve 911 service

FCC rules VoIP providers must report outages in effort to improve 911 service

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

The FCC has many important things under its jurisdiction, and ensuring a functional 911 service is among the most critical. As such, telephony providers are required to report network outages, so the commission can monitor and maintain a resilient service. Until now, this hasn't included VoIP services, but a new ruling states that interconnected VoIP providers will have to declare outages that meet certain criteria. The move comes after the FCC's most recent Local Competition Report, which reveals that almost one-third of the 87 million residential telephone subscriptions are now provided as VoIP, and therefore carry emergency calls. While public safety is the main driver, the report also st...

Developers cautiously convinced by Apple Gatekeeper

Developers cautiously convinced by Apple Gatekeeper

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple began its Mountain Lion Gatekeeper charm-offensive with developers last week, it’s been revealed, though there remain concerns around whether non-Mac App Store apps will get the same advantages as those released through the official download store. Developers Panic have documented Apple’s outreach efforts, co-founder Cabel Sasser having been invited to a preview session with Mountain Lion earlier in February, where the Cupertino company was keen to reassure him that it has no plans to make the Mac App Store the only way to get apps in OS X.

Apple Messages beta includes high DPI art

Apple Messages beta includes high DPI art

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple's Messages beta may have been a further clue as to Apple's possible plans for high-resolution Mac displays. Multiple images in the app package are designated "@2x," a new designation usually seen only in recent pre-release iOS code. Even the normally small chat tab icon for a contact is 82x82.
The sharper network would be included to account for larger resolutions where existing artwork would either scale poorly or be too small at its native density. It's doubtful the artwork is intended for existing Macs given that even the 17-inch MacBook Pro's 1920x1200 display hasn't prompted higher resolution artwork in the past.

More HTC Endeavor whispers: SLCD display, thin chassis, 32GB and no microSD

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Months of rumors about the HTC Endeavor (aka the One X, Edge, Ville) have layered up to provide a pretty complete (if not totally reliable) picture of the forthcoming Tegra 3-powered Android handset. There's room for a few more brush-strokes, however, and one of MoDaCo's tipsters is happy to paint them. We're told the new handset will have a Super LCD display, despite earlier rumors of HTC flirting with AMOLED (again). This could be no bad thing, judging from the stunning 1280 x 720 panel on the Rezound, but the Endeavor is expected to have a larger 4.7-inch screen and hence a slightly lower pixel density. The thinness of the Endeavor's chassis will reportedly be a major selling point, as wi...

Win 8 touch-ultrabooks flirt with form-factors

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Apple may be coy on touchscreen MacBooks, but PC manufacturers are tipped to be gung-ho on touch-enabled Windows 8 ultrabooks, with a range of form-factors and designs expected later in 2012. Lenovo, Asus and Acer are all said to have finger-friendly models in the pipeline, DigiTimes reports, though limitations around hinge design have apparently forced some creative thinking in what each company’s version will look like.

Google wins back typo domains

Google wins back typo domains

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Google has won the rights to a bunch of typo-squatted domain names, including Gougle.com, Go0gle.com and, our favourite, goggleemail.com.
This may shock you, but there are people out there who prey on your fat-fingered address bar typos like the carrion vultures of the 'net.
In this case, it was one anonymous outfit sitting on over 30 domains which will now be transferred over to Google's ownership and will probably redirect users to whatever bit of Google it was they seem to be trying to reach.

Clearwire hopes to have TD-LTE networks live by June 2013

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

When Clearwire started, it was operating WiMAX networks in limited areas around the country. The rollout of those WiMAX networks took longer than expected and Clearwire ended up without the giant lead in 4G expected over LTE. Clearwire decided to start rolling out LTE networks in addition to WiMAX. Clearwire will specifically roll out TD-LTE networks around the country.
Right now, Clearwire is expecting to have 5000 TD-LTE sites up and running by June of 2013. The news comes directly from Clearwire CEO Erik Prusch during a conference call to announce the Q4 earnings for the company. The CEO also stated that not too long after those first 5000 TD-LTE sites go live, the coverage will be expand...

The Pirate Bay and RIAA duke it out over piracy

The Pirate Bay and RIAA duke it out over piracy

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

The Pirate Bay has hit back over allegations by the RIAA that it is the worst file-sharing site on the planet by saying the music association "is no longer in charge".
The RIAA has decided enough is enough with The Pirate Bay and has criticised its move from a US domain to a Swedish one.
"The Pirate Bay is a blatantly illegal file-sharing site, proud that it's an online bazaar of every conceivable US copyrighted work, found criminally responsible by its own country's legal system and who has been ordered by courts in at least seven European countries to be blocked by ISPs, has publicly acknowledged changing its domain name to escape US laws," explained Vice President Mitch Glazier from the R...
