Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Either Orange Austria is pushing the handset pretty hard, or the Nokia Lumia 800 is performing well on their network, but it appears the carrier has crowned the handset one of its best sellers.
The smartphone was launched in Austria at the end of 2011 and became available early in January.

Effort underway to port HARET / Android to Gen 1 Windows Phones

Effort underway to port HARET / Android to Gen 1 Windows Phones

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Some ex-Windows Mobile users may remember HARET as the tool used to enable to booting of Android on the old HTC HD2.
Now an effort is underway to bring the tool to Windows Phone 7. I think it is safe to say the lead on the project is doing this more as a way to convert a nice Windows Phones to Android, writing:
WP7 is and will be shipped on many devices with quality hardware. In order to be able to run Linux on these, a novel aim is to investigate the use of HaRET on WP7 based devices.
I am sure however that there are a few Windows Phone users who would not mind hacking around with their device to access the full potential of the hardware.

Notion Ink releases Adam ICS Beta ROM, but it's a bit raw

Notion Ink releases Adam ICS Beta ROM, but it's a bit raw

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan has been keeping everyone up to speed on the development process for the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Notion Ink Adam tablet, and today marks a pretty big day in that process. Just before the new year, Rohan showed off a pre-Alpha build of the Android 4.0 update, but today brought the beta release of the ROM.
The development seems to have come along fairly well, and the team now has confirmed that 3G is now working, as well as graphics acceleration, YouTube HD, and USB. The beta ROM also fixes the sleep bug, and improves WiFi and sound compared to earlier releases. That said, it is still a beta, so not everything is working. The camera still doesn't work, n...

Samsung Galaxy S III resolution may have been leaked

Samsung Galaxy S III resolution may have been leaked

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

A leaked User Agent Profile (UAProf) is one of the least reliable sources of accurate information about an upcoming mobile device. For example, the leaked UAProf for the Galaxy Nexus claimed that it had a WVGA (480x800) screen, which was obviously quite untrue. That said, the new UAProf leak for the Samsung Galaxy S III looks a bit more realistic, although not 100% believable.
The leaked document lists the screen resolution of the Galaxy S III as 1024x600. On first glance, that seems like a resolution high enough to be real, and the 16:9 aspect ratio is very interesting as well. A true 16:9 ratio on the screen would likely make for a slightly more elongated form factor than what we normally...

Quad-core Motorola ATRIX 3 revealed with 3300mAh battery (Rumour)

Quad-core Motorola ATRIX 3 revealed with 3300mAh battery (Rumour)

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG15

This one could go either way, but I’m inclined to believe it based on Motorola’s history. A shot of a device has leaked that purports to be the ATRIX 3, complete with a 4.3-inch 720p screen, quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 2GB RAM and a whopping 3300mAh battery. Also note that the device in question does not have any capacitive buttons up front, which jibes with the previous render of Motorola’s Medfield-powered handset. And, since it’s about to be purchased by Google, it would make sense that future handsets would eschew those buttons for the Google-endorsed on-screen variety. Apparently the camera has received a bump to 10MP with dual LED flashes, but we can’t see around back to confirm. The ...

The popular third-party software keyboard Swype has been updated to support Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Swype is an app that uses word prediction in combination with swiping motions to allow users to quickly write emails, text messages, tweets and anything else that requires text input. The software is still not available in the Android Market, unfortunately, and it must be downloaded from the company’s website. Though the software is currently in beta stages for Android 4.0, users have yet to report any major issues.

RIM registers 6600 developers in 11 days with free BlackBerry PlayBook promotion

Posted on Feb 17, 2012 by MG1

RIM has recently extended a promotion that gave away a free BlackBerry PlayBook to anyone who submitted a "viable" app to BlackBerry App World. The promotion was to expire on Monday but RIM's Head of Developer Relations Alec Saunders has extended the deadline for the free PlayBook to March as developers have been signing up with the Canadian based manufacturer.
Saunders sent out a tweet on Tuesday proudly announcing that RIM had signed up 6600 developers in the previous 11 days. Developers have told Berry Review that it has been taking longer than usual to register as a developer, but RIM is supposed to have everything working fine now. And if you are a RIM investor worrying about the compan...

Samsung Stratosphere getting BOGO'd at Verizon with new $99 contract price

Posted on Feb 17, 2012 by MG1

Remember the Samsung Stratosphere? The model was Verizon's first 4G LTE enabled model to pack a side-sliding physical QWERTY. Recently priced at $149.99 with a 2-year contract, the gang at Big Red have chopped $50 off the price of the phone to a more affordable $99.99 with that signed 2-year pact. And that is not all. The Samsung Stratosphere is now the subject of a BOGO promotion which means that you will receive two Stratospheres for the price of one.
See if this refreshes your memory. The Samsung Stratosphere is equipped with a 4 inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen with a pixel density of 233. Under the hood is a single-core 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM aboard. 4GB of native memory is inclu...

Sony finally waves goodbye to Ericsson

Sony finally waves goodbye to Ericsson

Posted on Feb 17, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Sony

Sony's takeover of Sony Ericsson has been officially completed, with the firm buying out Ericsson's 50% stake in the mobile device company.
The £871 million deal was announced in October last year and sees Sony take full control of the firm which it has renamed Sony Mobile Communications.
This means Sony will now produce handsets bearing only its name, and we've already seen the first of these in the form of the Xperia S.
Plenty more where that came from
Several more Sony branded mobiles are expected to launch at MWC 2012 in Barcelona with the likes of the Xperia U, Xperia P and Tapioca all in with a chance of a possible appearance.
