Court Overturns Conviction of Programmer on Appeal

Court Overturns Conviction of Programmer on Appeal

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

A federal appeals court has overturned the 2010 conviction of former Goldman Sachs programmer Sergey Aleynikov, ordering the trial court to enter a judgement of acquittal. Aleynikov was previously convicted under the Economic Espionage Act of stealing source code from projects he had worked on at Goldman Sachs. It seems technology outstripped the law once again in this case.
The issue in the case was the wording of the 15 year-old Economic Espionage Act, which demands harsh penalties for anyone that steals a “product produced for interstate commerce.” Mr. Aleynikov worked on building high-volume trading platforms for Goldman Sachs, which were never used for public commerce. Aleynikov uploade...

FBI Preparing to Shut Down Temporary DNS Servers, Kill Unknown Number of Internet Connections

FBI Preparing to Shut Down Temporary DNS Servers, Kill Unknown Number of Internet Connections

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

The FBI is currently scheduled to take several temporary DNS servers offline on March 8th; an action that could result in the disconnection of millions of Internet users. This dilemma stems from a nasty trojan that was circulating back in 2011 called DNSChanger. This bug was used to alter a user’s DNS settings, and law enforcement used temporary DNS servers to give everyone time to fix the problem. Experts fear that many systems are still infected, and risk failure on March 8th.
DNSChanger used the modified DNS server settings to route users to malicious (and possibly illegal) domains instead of the ones they intended to visit. The feds worked with Estonian authorities to apprehend the creat...

Do you use Twitter's "Find Friends" feature on your Android smartphone or iPhone device? If so, you may have been agreeing to more than you bargained for. Privacy advocates are up in arms after it was discovered that Twitter has been harvesting address books from smartphones that use this feature, in many cases without proper disclosure or the user's explicit permission.
Twitter acknowledged this was the case and said it would update its app to be more clear about user contacts being transmitted and stored, the L.A. Times reports.

Pirate Bay could be blocked in UK after court ruling

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

The Pirate Bay could be blocked by internet service providers (ISPs) in the UK after a High Court ruling that its operators "incite or persuade" copyright infringement.
No representatives of The Pirate Bay attended the hearing. The case was taken to court by a group of major record labels including EMI, Sony and Universal.
The record labels want to force ISPs like BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media to block their users from accessing The Pirate Bay website.
Mr Justice Arnold said: "In my judgment, the operators of [The Pirate Bay] do authorise its users' infringing acts of copying and communication to the public. They go far beyond merely enabling or assisting.
"I conclude that both users an...

NSA: Anonymous Could Cause Power Outages Through Cyberattacks

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

Anonymous already has a diverse set of tactics, including showing up to awards ceremonies. But the NSA is worried that its cyberattacks could bring about power outages across the US.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Gen. Keith Alexander, director of the NSA, has described in private meetings how "Anonymous could have the ability within the next year or two to bring about a limited power outage through a cyberattack". These concerns haven't been aired publicly, but rather reported by people familiar with the gatherings.

Future version of Google Chrome may suggest more secure passwords for you

Future version of Google Chrome may suggest more secure passwords for you

Google is considering adding password generation to future versions of Chrome, which could increase the use of more secure passwords. The system, as outlined on the Chromium Projects' developer documentation, would auto-detect sign-up forms on web pages and suggest unique and complex passwords that are much more secure than what users generally come up with. Since Chrome can already remember passwords, this would keep password generation and management entirely in the browser, eliminating the overuse of the same password across multiple services. If this sounds familiar, it's because 1Password and LastPass already offer the same service.

ZTE Mimosa X announced with ICS for Q2 2012: first phone to combine Tegra SoC with Icera modem

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

You may have your sights set on Nvidia's next generation of mobile processor, the Tegra 3, but the company has another little achievement to announce today: the first smartphone powered entirely by its chips. The Mimosa X from ZTE features the dual-core Tegra 2 of old plus an Icera 450 HSPA+ modem for the baseband and RF processing. Icera was a 2011 acquisition for Nvidia that is quickly being transformed into the green team's modem design and development house — saving Nvidia the trouble of relying on competitors like Qualcomm for its connectivity needs. Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has promised that we'll see an integrated LTE chipset this year, one that combines the best of Tegra and Icera, ...

Hot off the news that Safari’s privacy measures for users had been bypassed by Google last week, Microsoft is joining in by noting that their Internet Explorer web browser’s privacy controls had been modified in a similar manner. Protection tips have been offered up by Microsoft and they’ve taken this opportunity to push Google into the mud once more as they continue to defend themselves against privacy naysayers. Microsoft has reportedly contacted Google to ask it to “commit to honoring P3P privacy settings for users of all browsers.”

Canon mirrorless rumours continue

Canon mirrorless rumours continue

Rumours are continuing to circulate about the possibility of Canon announcing a mirrorless compact system camera in the next few months.
With many people seeing it as an inevitably rather than a possibilty, the next question on everybody's lips is "when?"
Canon is currently the only major player in the photography market not to have a compact system camera on the market.
Its biggest rival, Nikon, finally entered the market towards the end of 2011, and has been enjoying fairly large success with its V1 and J1 models which feature a small sensor.
Of course, it's not known what size sensor Canon will choose to use should it produce a mirrorless model, but a new patent discovered by a Japanese w...

The DNA Sequencing Thumb Drive

The DNA Sequencing Thumb Drive

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

It was a major breakthrough in 1995: After 13 months, scientists finally sequenced the entire genome of a bacteria for the first time.
These days, a gene-slinger can do it in a few seconds. With a USB stick.
It's called the MinION, and the scientists at Oxford Nanopore Technologies who built it say the disposable device will be for sale later this year for $900. Doctors could carry them around in their lab coats, identifying viruses and disease genes on the spot.

'HSPA+ Multiflow' to be shown at MWC, lets devices talk to two towers at once

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced that it'll be demonstrating HSPA+ Multiflow at Mobile World Congress next week, a technology that allows phones and modems near the edge of one HSPA+ cell site to connect to a second site simultaneously. NSN is making some lofty promises about the technology, saying it could deliver twice the data speed and up to a 50 percent reduction in latency versus today's HSPA+ networks. Dual-carrier HSPA — which is already in deployment around the world — is somewhat similar in concept, but doesn't allow for connectivity to multiple towers simultaneously. Presumably, Multiflow won't require additional spectrum to operate, either.

Chrome for Android to get big updates in the next year

Google's senior vice president of Chrome and Apps, Sundar Pichai, sat down and talked about Chrome in all of its iterations with CNet and more specifically, he talked about the new Chrome Beta for Android and the improvements that we can expect to see in future updates. Chrome Beta hit the Android Market just a couple weeks ago, but the improvements it brought in speed and HTML5 performance were instantly noticeable.
Google has always been a company that is pretty open about gathering input from users and using that data to inform the updates that get pushed to Google products, and Chrome for Android is no different. According to Pichai, Google has heard the cries from power users and will ...

The new addition, which appeared on Monday on the .com and .co.uk sites, non only breaks the usual minimal design of the Google homepage but allows you, for the first time, to do something other than search while searching.
