According to the Seattle Times, Microsoft will be launching an online ad campaign this week with the Smoked by Windows Phone theme.
This will consist of a series of online ads challenging those who use iPhones, Android phones or other mobile devices to beat the speed of a Windows Phone in doing a browser search, sharing with their social network or shooting and posting a photo.
The 12 ads will run on tech sites as well as the Windows Phone Facebook page until the start of April.
Microsoft’s Windows Phone Facebook page will show video footage from the original "Smoked by Windows Phone" challenge featuring Ben “the pc guy” Rudolph which took place at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

AT&T launches pilot program for expanded push-to-talk services

Filed in: AT&T

Let's face it, walkie-talkies are far from glamorous, but for large and small enterprises that rely on real-time communication, the WWII artifact remains an integral part of the workday. Now, AT&T has set forth on a journey to give its push-to-talk services a modern makeover, and it's recruiting a few partners to join the quest. In addition to providing PTT-enabled smartphones, the carrier will be testing IP-based technologies that offer workflow automation for tasks such as fleet management and dispatch. Additionally, the system will also offer integration with traditional radio systems such as PMR and LMR, which means an organization won't need to transition its entire crew at once. You ca...

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 blows competition out of the water and has the benchmarks to prove it

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 blows competition out of the water and has the benchmarks to prove it

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG1

Qualcomm is the first company expected to bring 28nm architectures to mass market with its Snapdragon S4 chip, and if that doesn’t tell you much, we’d oversimplify it by simply saying that it blows the current crop of chips out of the water. The technology is a generational leap over current chips in phones mostly manufactured under the 40nm process.
The new S4 is also remarkable because it integrates practically every network frequency you might need including an integrated LTE chip and is expected to finally bring noticeable improvement to battery life on LTE devices.
AnandTech got its hands on the mobile development platform (MDP) for the Qualcomm MSM8960 and brings us the benchmarks to ...

UK government plans to force ISPs, carriers to store web and phone usage

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG1

A new report has surfaced that reveals the UK government plans to force British ISPs and mobile operators to keep online communications by internet users, as well as phone call details, text messages and website visits. The proposed anti-terror plans would see UK ISPs ordered to keep this information for at least one year, and make it available when requested by Goverment security services, according to the report by the Daily Telegraph.
The proposed Communications Capabilities Development Programme (CCDP) claims the actual content of calls and emails would not be recorded, however, the phone numbers, email addresses and identities of those using social networks and phone handsets would be k...

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom released on bail in New Zealand, not allowed to use the internet

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG1

A little over a month has passed since Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom was jailed in New Zealand on charges filed by the US Department of Justice, but now he's surprisingly been freed on bail. A New Zealand judge has decided that it was "very unlikely" that Dotcom had sufficient funds to flee or go into hiding after his main assets had been seized — apparently, four bank accounts were discovered in the Philippines, but they were all empty. While US prosecutors said that it was likely Dotcom had access to more funds because of his wealth, the New Zealand judge felt Dotcom was put in the position of having to "prove a negative," and thus the assertion that he might have more money wasn't enough ...

If you've been keeping an eye on this tasty little computer, you'll know it's a pretty exciting concept already. To further sweeten the deal, it just got its own version of Fedora. A special "remix" edition has been ported over to the micro-machine by a team at Seneca College. Although there's already a Debian release for the diminutive device, the project's official blog states that Fedora Remix is the distribution it'll be recommending to users. The OS image fits on a 2GB memory card, and comes complete with a GUI, programming and system administration tools, web browser and other essential apps to get you going. PS Vita hits UK

PS Vita hits UK

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG1

Sony’s PS Vita has hit the mean streets of the UK, stores across the country opening at midnight to give eager gamers their chance to grab the next-gen portable, with US sales expected to begin within hours. Although early queues for the Vita had only garnered low numbers earlier this week, by midnight there were several hundred waiting outside retailer Game’s flagship London store, The Telegraph reports.
The store itself had been reskinned to mark the Sony console’s launch, with huge PS Vita branding across its windows. First in the queue was Zohaib Ali, who had been waiting since Sunday to pick up his Vita.

Google is facing a new lawsuit for violating privacy rights on Apple's Safari web browser, Bloomberg reported. An Illinois man, Matthew Soble, claimed in the suit that Google sidesteps the computer settings that are designed to block monitoring of a user's whereabouts on the web. The lawyers representing Soble alleged that Google did so willfully and knowingly.
Soble aims to make the lawsuit a class-action case, hoping to attract other plaintiffs upset at the shift. The lawsuit was filed in a Delaware court.

Ubuntu coming soon to multi-core Android devices

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG1

Canonical announced on Tuesday that the popular open-source Ubuntu operating system will soon be coming to multi-core Android devices. Users will be able use Android on their smartphones and Ubuntu as a desktop once the device is docked with a keyboard and monitor. Both operating systems will run simultaneously on the same device and have the ability to share contacts, messages and other common services. “The phone experience is pure Android – it’s a normal Android phone,” Canonical stated. “When the device is connected to a computer screen, however, it launches a full Ubuntu desktop on the computer display. It’s exactly the same desktop used by millions of enterprise and home users on their...

Amazon building 10-inch Kindle Fire

Amazon building 10-inch Kindle Fire

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG1

If you passed on the Kindle Fire because you felt its 7-inch display was too small, then you may be in luck with this latest rumor. According to China Times, Amazon is said to be working on a 10-inch version of the hottest selling Android tablet on the market, which is slated to release sometime in the second quarter.
If true, this suggest that the Kindle maker would be competing directly with the iPad when it comes to size and form factor. Like all rumors this needs to be taken with a grain of salt until more concrete evidence comes to light. When it comes to specs, no one knows what this slate will carry; all that’s being said is Foxconn will supposedly manufacture this larger tablet which...

Acer S271HL: Ultra-Slim LED Monitor with a 100,000,000:1 Contrast Ratio

Acer S271HL: Ultra-Slim LED Monitor with a 100,000,000:1 Contrast Ratio

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

Acer today unveiled its new S271HL S1 series monitor, an ultra-slim LED display with a scant 24mm profile and a rounded glossy porcelain-like foot stand. It has a 27-inch panel with a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080 @ 60Hz) resolution, but its real claim to fame is its 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio (dynamic, of course), along with a super fast 2ms response time.
The space saving design, impressive spec sheet, and and large screen panel combine to form a panel suitable for both work and play, according to Acer, though if you're into serious graphics work, a Twisted Nematic (TN) display is probably not on your radar. Nevertheless, for the working stiff who doesn't require an IPS panel, the S271HL S1 i...

Office for iPad repoortedly leaked, near ready

Office for iPad repoortedly leaked, near ready

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

Microsoft's long-rumored Office for iPad got a much more tangible piece of evidence after a leak Tuesday purported to show the suite itself. As shown by The Daily, Office would be an all-encompassing single app with Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. The interface would recall OneNote but bring in more of the Metro interface language from Windows Phone and Windows 8.
It's not apparent if other apps would fill out Office, although Microsoft doesn't have as much of a need given the built-in e-mail app's Exchange sync support.

NSA director warns Anonymous could soon cause limited power outages

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

I have a strong feeling that the heat is about to get turned up significantly on the hacker group Anonymous. Gen. Keith Alexander, the director of NSA, has warned that Anonymous could have the ability within the next year or two to cause a limited power outage via cyber attacks. Anonymous has been growing in power and boldness over the last year or more with high profile attacks on Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal among others.
Anonymous is also taking credit for things like bringing down the CIA website along with the websites of several other domestic and foreign governments. While the attacks so far have been more focused on embarrassing the target companies, some in the government fear that ...

Valve-Branded Gaming Hardware on the Way? Gabe Newell Says It Could Happen

Valve-Branded Gaming Hardware on the Way? Gabe Newell Says It Could Happen

Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

If you're currently imagining a dystopic future in which we all nervously salute guards clad in Combine outfits while texting on our Steam-powered phones and breathing the Steam-branded air, calm down. Gabe Newell has no aspirations of heading up his own ill-gotten evil empire. In truth, he'd prefer that Valve forever avoids getting its hands dirty with the greasy innards of some proprietary piece of hardware. However, if it's the “only” way to keep innovation's gears churning, then he won't hesitate to bite that particular bullet.
