RIM's BlackBerry Torch 9810 emerges on AT&T's website, touts '4G' capabilities
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9810
Well, hello beautiful! Can't say we were expecting to see RIM launch a new BlackBerry this evening, but we're sure there's quite a few of you out there that'll take it. The same BlackBerry Torch 2 that we previewed back in June has made the trek over to Ma Bell's network, with a 'Coming Soon' page emerging just moments ago. AT&T claims that this is the world's first 4G BlackBerry on its airwaves, but of course, that asterisk upside the "4G" logo couldn't possibly be more telling. Regardless, the full-featured slider will arrive with BlackBerry 7 OS, a full QWERTY keyboard, sliding display, 1.2GHz processor, 8GB of onboard memory, room for 32GB of expandable storage, 720p video capture, inbui...

BlackBerry Torch 9860 lighting up the FCC? (Update: frequencies added)
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9850
We're not precisely sure which model this mystery phone is with the neon-green back, but we know it's from RIM, and it looks an awful lot like some of the early leaked shots we've seen of the 9860, aka the Torch. It's made a visit to the FCC under the moniker RDH71CW / RDP71UW / RDQ71UW, different designations for various frequency flavors we presume, but at this point is only being tested for Bluetooth and WiFi compliance, leaving us guessing as to future carriers. Place your bets in comments below, and feel free to speculate about when this thing might actually ship -- and what color it might be when it does.
Update: Digging deeper into the filings, we discovered that RDH71CW supports GSM ...

BlackBerry Torch 9810 coming to Rogers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9810
We’ve been hearing an awful lot about the U.S. carriers getting OS 7 BlackBerry devices, but not so much about us poor souls up north. Luckily, a few shots of Rogers in-store materials for the new Torch 9810 have slipped out. No mention of pricing, nor if Rogers will be getting the other OS 7 devices soon, like the Torch 9860, but it’s a safe assumption that Rogers and all of the major Canadian carriers (like Bell) will get at least a few of the new smartphones.
Athough the Torch 9810 looks an awful lot like its predecessor, it does bump up the processor speed to 1.2 GHz, improves RAM to 768 MB, and though the screen is still 3.2 inches and camera 5 megapixels, the display resolution is now ...

Verizon's Blackberry Bold 9930 unveiled early thanks to website blunder
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryBold 9930
Oh boy, we don't envy the Verizon web admin who made this particular mis-click. If you go to VZW's sales page for the Blackberry 9650 and click on the "Explore Features" video, you get an unexpected treat: a walkthrough not of the 9650, but of the unreleased Bold 9930. The specs are familiar, like the 1.2GHz processor, 2.8-inch touchscreen and Blackberry 7 OS. But at least we now have it from the horse's mouth that the new Bold Touch is indeed coming to Verizon. We've stuck our own rip of the video after the break, as the original will likely disappear any second -- much like that poor web admin.

US government gives BlackBerry PlayBook the thumbs up
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
The BlackBerry PlayBook has become the first tablet to receive the necessary certification for it to be used by federal government agencies in the US.
RIM's first tablet effort received the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification which is required for any gadget hoping to be used by the White House and any other governmental department.
No doubt RIM's excellent security procedures were key in getting the tablet the federal okay – it's the enterprise-level cautiousness that has so far kept the PlayBook from getting its own native email app, relying on BlackBerry smartphones' secure exchange to populate email, contacts and calendars on the tablet.
Safety first

BlackBerry PlayBook Android App player leaks, brings thousands of apps from the Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsRIM BlackBerryGoogleAndroidPlayBook
RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook features a handful of apps, but we've been teased with the promise of Android app support for months. And now we seem closer than ever to the final version as a beta of the BlackBerry PlayBook Android app player leaked out. The application was found through a changelog in an update to the Desktop Manager and tech blog N4BB has been sent an old beta build which might not have the final interface (there's no back button, so you have to swipe on the bezel at the bottom to go back), but it works.
Ironically, the app player is based on Android Gingerbread 2.3.3, a version that's only available on a few phones yet. That should translate into support for the more than 200,...

Android tablets now 30% of the market, Windows tablets outsold PlayBook in Q2
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsMicrosoftRIM BlackBerryGoogleWindows 7AndroidPlayBook
Microsoft has yet to launch its tablet-optimized operating system and yet slates running various versions of the Windows operating system still managed to outsell Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook last quarter. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics’ latest report, Windows-powered media tablets owned 4.6% of the global market in the second quarter of 2011. In the same period, RIM’s PlayBook made up just 3.3% of the market. The firm also shows that competition may finally be heating up in the tablet space. Apple, which owned more than 94% of the market in the second quarter last year, saw the iPad’s share slide to 61.3% according to Strategy Analytics. Over the same perio...

Cisco, RIM and the Lure of the Consumer Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: CiscoRIM BlackBerry
What is it about the mass-market consumer space that attracts so many business-savvy companies and ultimately hobbles or even dooms them? There are companies, like Apple, that obviously understand consumers and consumer marketing strategy and then there are companies like Cisco and Research in Motion (RIM), which clearly do not.
News that Cisco is laying off almost 9% of its workforce is black mark for CEO John Chambers, a man whom leaders at smaller companies have all but worshipped. I don't know for certain that the cuts will come primarily in Cisco's consumer business, but the missteps that have led up to this news have been in the consumer space.
Cisco and RIM's travails are most interes...

Playbook WiFi Being Canceled? Not So Fast!
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
Not too many people batted an eye at speculation that Research in Motion, the company behind all Blackberry products, would be putting an end to the WiFi version of its Playbook tablet.
But RIM has something to say about it - namely that such speculation is completely baseless.
RBC Capital Markets managing director Mike Abramsky wrote in a note to investors that RIM could possibly pull the WiFi-only Playbook models and focus exclusively on mobile carrier-support 3G-enabled versions of the device.
Abramsky posited that RIM would immediately stop production of the WiFi model but continue to market and sell through its existing inventory.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS updated with enhanced attachment support
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
Earlier today the RIM’s tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook, was updated to OS 1.0.7. It’s not quite as significant as the last update, but there are a few new features, mostly surrounding file attachments. Now files can be saved to your BlackBerry smartphone over Bridge in addition to locally on the tablet. The PlayBook can also read ZIP files, which is great for folks who regularly deal with batches of compressed files as e-mail attachments. There are a few other minor changes, like portrait orientation in the pictures app, pinching to zoom in videos, and a new airplane mode option. There’s also a whole range of new languages supported, ranging from Russian to Bahasa Indonesian.

BlackBerry PlayBook update brings ZIP file support, other features
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
RIM has just released an update to the BlackBerry Tablet OS that runs on the BlackBerry PlayBook. The update adds improved attachment support and new multimedia options to the platform.
Version 1.0.7 of the BlackBerry Tablet OS offers improved connectivity and attachment support for the BlackBerry Bridge application that links BlackBerry smartphones to the PlayBook. Users can now access ZIP files that are attached to emails, and extract and view the contents on their PlayBooks. The files themselves are stored on the SD card inside the BlackBerry smartphone, so when the phone is disconnected from the PlayBook, no files remain on the tablet.
Additionally, the pictures app now supports portrai...

BlackBerry PlayBook Wi-Fi Version To Be Discontinued?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
Research In Motion (RIM) rushed out the BlackBerry PlayBook earlier this year that received little love for its many platform shortcomings—check out our review. The tablet was based on RIM’s new QNX OS, to which the company is struggling to transition. Although the promised 4G version of the tablet has yet to arrive, there are already reports that RIM may discontinue the Wi-Fi model.
In a note to investors, RBC Capital Markets Managing Director Mike Abramsky reported that the company may discontinue its production of the Wi-Fi BlackBerry PlayBook. This model is the only one the company currently produces, as the 3G/4G version is still in the horizon.

BlackBerry Torch 9810 passes through FCC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9810
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 recently passed FCC certification, but that’s not the only RIM device coming down the pipe. The Torch 2 9810 has also made its way through the testing rigamarole, which suggests that it’s one of the multiple devices RIM has promised in the next month. The bands tested line up with AT&T’s HSPA network, so that locks in at least one supporting carrier for launch.
Like most of the next-generation BlackBerry smartphones, the Torch 9810 will have a near-field communications chip built in for contactless payments and other neat applications. There will also be a magnetic compass included which will enable augmented reality appls like Wikitude. From what we’ve seen in leaked...
