BlackBerry Torch 2 slides through the FCC, bound for AT&T?

BlackBerry Torch 2 slides through the FCC, bound for AT&T?

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG3

We've already gotten our grubby little mitts on it, and it looks like soon enough you too will be able to wrap your QWERTY-loving digits around a Torch 2. It looks like the display-centric BlackBerry just slid its way through the FCC, sporting 850MHz and 1900MHz GSM bands, indicating this particular model (listed as RDM71UW) is destined for AT&T. Obviously, even if this is in fact the Torch 2, an FCC filing is not exactly a confirmed release date -- so don't start lining up outside your local AT&T outlet just yet.

RIM said to be prepping Apple TV competitor for fall launch

RIM said to be prepping Apple TV competitor for fall launch

Posted on Jul 15, 2011 by MG1

Research In Motion is currently working on a media box codenamed “BlackBerry Cyclone” that will launch later this fall, BlackBerry news site NerdBerry.net reports. The rumored media hub is said to be similar to Apple’s iOS-based Apple TV box, which connects to a television and plays streaming video content from iTunes. The BlackBerry Cyclone’s purported capabilities include Netflix streaming, YouTube streaming and streaming from media devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The unit will also reportedly feature an HDMI-out port. The move would be a peculiar one from RIM, as it does not have an iTunes competitor to speak of and even with the extremely popular multimedia market, the Apple...

Boost Mobile officially getting the BlackBerry Style 9670 on July 20

Boost Mobile officially getting the BlackBerry Style 9670 on July 20

Posted on Jul 15, 2011 by MG1

Okay, it may not be that surprising of a fact since rumors about it surfaced on the web last week, but the BlackBerry Style 9670 is now officially bound to join Boost Mobile's lineup of contract-free smartphones. Starting July 20, the Style 9670 will be available for purchase at a price of $200, and a fitting BlackBerry Monthly Unlimited plan will set you back another $60 per month.
The Style 9670 is not your traditional BlackBerry smartphone, at least not when it comes to its form factor, as it boasts a clamshell design reminiscent to that of the BlackBerry Pearl Flip. However, what you will find as soon as you flip open the Style 9670 is a full QWERTY keyboard just like the ones that RIM's...

RIM co-CEOs have six months to prove they need chairman status too

RIM co-CEOs have six months to prove they need chairman status too

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

The maker of BlackBerry smartphones has about six months to prove to investors that their unique leadership structure is not only viable but vital to the future of Research In Motion. Investment firm Northwest & Ethical pushed for RIM’s co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis to get off the board of directors so it could govern in the company’s best interest independently. NEI had withdrawn their shareholder vote on the proposal, as RIM has agreed to get a neutral third party to assess the situation, and issue a conclusion by January 31. That timing would allow NEI to make a motion for the separation of roles (if needed) for the next annual meeting. More irate shareholders point to a previo...

RIM promises seven new BlackBerry smartphones in coming months

RIM promises seven new BlackBerry smartphones in coming months

Posted on Jul 13, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

RIM just finished wrapping up their annual shareholders meeting. The bit of info mentioned of most interest to everyday consumers was that seven BlackBerry smartphones are due to land in the next couple of months. Co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that there would be several devices “within rapid succession” in the next month. The Bold 9900 is on track for a summer launch again, as we had been seeing in carrier leaks, and it’s probably safe to assuming the 9860 and 9850 will be coming shortly behind. So what are the other four? Torch 9810, Curve 9360, and their various CDMA/GSM equivalents, maybe? Or maybe that Curve Touch is still lurking around the corner to offer a low-cost alternative to the 986...

BlackBerry Bold 9900 jaunts through FCC

BlackBerry Bold 9900 jaunts through FCC

Posted on Jul 13, 2011 by MG1

There’s been some worry that RIM’s next lineup of BlackBerry smartphones wouldn’t make it out the door before the back-to-school rush, but to back up rumours of a mid-August release, the Bold 9900 has recently passed through FCC filing. That’s usually a good sign that we’ll see the device within the next month, although hardly a sure bet. Some documents are dated far back as June 23, but have only been viewable recently due to the usual confidentiality period the FCC grants.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 was announced at RIM’s annual conference this spring, and is spearheading their new OS 7 platform. It’s a slim device, has a lot of fresh style to it, while still staying within the well-establis...

Analyst calls for RIM to break apart handset, network businesses

Analyst calls for RIM to break apart handset, network businesses

Posted on Jul 13, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

With Research In Motion’s annual shareholder meeting scheduled to take place later today, one popular RIM-focused analyst is calling for the company to split its handset and network businesses into two separate companies. “RIM’s organization, like its handsets, needs modernization. By acting now, splitting RIM into network and handset businesses may target opportunities and unlock significant shareholder value,” RBC Capital Markets Managing Director Mike Abramsky wrote in a note to investors on Tuesday. “RIM’s end-to-end solution was conceived when data devices and networks were nascent — but times have changed,” the analyst continued. Abramsky believes the standalone network business can ta...

Apple beats RIM is U.S. market share - Android above both

Apple beats RIM is U.S. market share - Android above both

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

The latest numbers have come out from comScore and it has some revealing stats about the state of the U.S. smartphone market. Basically, Apple and Android are winners while RIM and Microsoft are the losers.
Perhaps helped by the Verizon iPhone, Apple iOS was able to surpass RIM’s BlackBerry OS in overall market share. Apple claimed 26.6 percent of the market while RIM had 24.7 percent, a 4.2 percent drop from February of 2011 (note: the comScore numbers deal with March 2011 figures). This is just the latest bad piece of news for RIM, as the company has been hammered by anonymous letters from employees which don’t express much confidence.

RIM rumored making BlackBerry Media Box to rival Apple TV

RIM rumored making BlackBerry Media Box to rival Apple TV

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

RIM may have a counterpart to the Apple TV, according to a rumor put forward by a historically reliable source. So far nicknamed the BlackBerry Media Box, it would be a blend between the basic BlackBerry Presenter and a media hub like Apple's box. The design would even take a cue from Apple in N4BB' understanding and use the same hardware as a mobile device, in this case likely the processor and QNX-based OS from the BlackBerry PlayBook.
It wouldn't necessarily be as home-oriented as the Apple TV but might still have some third-party media services. An equivalent to AirPlay hasn't been mentioned and isn't currently known to be in the roadmap for BlackBerry Tablet OS. The OS does already supp...

HTC to displace RIM as No. 4 smartphone vendor

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: HTCRIM BlackBerry

HTC is set to slide into the No. 4 spot on the list of the world’s top smartphone vendors next year according to Taiwan-based research firm Market Intelligence Center. The slot is currently held by BlackBerry maker Research In Motion. Headquartered outside Taiwan’s capital, HTC has quietly built a smartphone empire as well as one of the highest market caps of any tech company on the Taiwan exchange. HTC builds some of the most popular Android smartphones in the world, and the company reported profits of NT$14.83 billion in the first quarter of 2011 — triple the profit it recorded in the same quarter one year prior. HTC also shipped 9.7 million smartphones in the first quarter, which represen...

More letters to RIM; employees rally alongside anonymous exec

More letters to RIM; employees rally alongside anonymous exec

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

BGR published an open letter to Research In Motion yesterday from an anonymous high-level RIM executive who begged for senior management to take notice of all of the issues within RIM. The exec explained how the company should make some changes to focus on the talent and potential within RIM, and also to focus on end users instead of carriers. After we published the article, RIM responded. It wasn’t pretty, and it really didn’t address a single point that was made by the original plea. It wasn’t just RIM that responded, however — we received dozens of emails from current and former RIM employees detailing their stories, and essentially all agreeing with the open letter that was published on ...

Anonymous RIM Employee Condemns Soviet-Era Government Atmosphere and Other Horrors

BlackBerry may have a nice slice of the market-share pie, and some interesting products—and platforms—on the way, but there are increasing fears over their future. This open letter to RIM, written by a "high-level" employee, says it all.
Told exclusively to BGR, the employee has detailed the problems RIM is facing, and offers up some solutions. Will they listen, though?

Opening the letter by stating s/he has "lost confidence," they detail that "while I hide it at work, my passion has been sapped. I know I am not alone - the sentiment is widespread and it includes people within your own teams," ending the letter by claiming "some of our offices feel like Soviet-era government workplaces."

RIM agrees to consider splitting CEO, Chairman roles

Posted on Jul 01, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

Research In Motion on Thursday said it would consider splitting its Chief Executive and Chairman roles ahead of its annual shareholder meeting next month. Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis currently each occupy both roles, and the pair have been the targets of much criticism from shareholders, analysts and the media since RIM’s earnings call earlier this month. The company said in a statement that it would assemble a committee of independent directors to study the CEO and board roles, and then make recommendations. The news follows an anonymous plea made by a senior RIM executive that was published exclusively by BGR earlier on Thursday. RIM responded by stating that the company is “in a soli...

Apple, RIM win big as ITC reverses earlier decision in Kodak patent case

Apple, RIM win big as ITC reverses earlier decision in Kodak patent case

Posted on Jul 01, 2011 by MG1

The International Trade Commission on Thursday reversed an earlier decision in a patent case that could cost camera maker Kodak hundreds of millions of dollars from Apple and RIM. Kodak had filed suit against both firms, claiming that their mobile devices infringed on multiple patents owned by the Rochester, NY-based company. An initial ruling in favor of Kodak was under ITC review, and the commission on Thursday reversed parts of the decision that had previously been ruled in Kodak’s favor. Other parts of the original ruling were sent to be examined by a judge of administrative law, and a final ruling is scheduled to be made on August 30th.
