On a day when all eyes in the mobile space are turned towards Samsung, Research in Motion has got to be feeling pretty low – and not just for the lack of attention. The Canadian BlackBerry manufacturer’s stock slid to just $11.91 today, losing over 15% of their value in the last three days alone. To add insult to injury, this financial blow comes just two days after RIM’s BlackBerry World 2012 conference, where ir introduced a new hardware and software platform.

The Curve 9320 is expected to slide into the bottom of the BlackBerry range, below the Curve 9360, as RIM looks to target its popular youth sector.
A spokesperson for RIM confirmed the news to TechRadar at BlackBerry World 2012, but was unable to provide any details relating to the exact Curve 9320 release date, price of specifications.
TechRadar did see a potential leak of BlackBerry Curve 9320 details last month, after T-Mobile accidentally let slip on its website.
According to the leak the Curve 9320 will sport the famous BlackBerry QWERTY keypad, a 3.2MP rear-facing camera, the BlackBerry 7.1 OS and it will also feature a dedicated BBM key on the side of the handset.

With the release of their BlackBerry 10 beta development tools and Dev Alpha devices earlier today, RIM has made it very clear that they want to build up as much developer love as possible before BlackBerry 10 officially launches.
Well, as it turns out, that’s not the only thing they’re doing to attract devs. Alec Saunders, RIM’s VP of Developer Relations, revealed at BlackBerry World that RIM will guarantee developers of quality apps a minimum of $10,000 in annual earnings — if developers come in under the $10K mark during their first year, RIM will actually pay them the difference.
Ah, but there’s a catch (isn’t there always?). In order to qualify for RIM’s generous offer, the apps in ques...

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. In this instance, it just leaves us wanting more. The image you see above is RIM's official dev unit for its just launched BlackBerry 10 platform. If it looks familiar, that's because you've seen it not too long ago when leaks of the much anticipated device began to hit the world wide rumor-mongering web. Waterloo's still keeping us in the dark as to the glorified guts this austere fella's packing, but it did confirm these alpha units will feature a jaw-dropping 4.2-inch, 1280 x 768 display that bests the 720p panels found on other similarly-sized handsets -- there's no word yet on if it's PenTile, though it likely doesn't matter much at that re...

Google's spring cleaning ends support for BlackBerry Sync, Picasa plug-ins for iPhoto, and more

Google's spring cleaning ends support for BlackBerry Sync, Picasa plug-ins for iPhoto, and more

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

Google has gotten in the habit of doing a seasonal cleaning of its many products and services, and this spring is no exception. Probably the biggest news is that Google's officially discontinuing its Google Sync for BlackBerry app, which has historically kept calendars and contacts in sync for BlackBerry users. As of June 1st, the app won't be available for download anymore, though Google notes that you'll still be able to use it if you already have it installed. Google helpfully suggests switching to the standard BlackBerry Internet Service, or trying its Google Apps connector for BlackBerry — however, that software requires BlackBerry Enterprise Server (standard or express), which might be...

BlackBerry still beats the competition on security

BlackBerry still beats the competition on security

BlackBerry has not been having the best time recently. RIM has been taking hits from every side, and BlackBerry has been losing support, but it does still have one thing to be proud of: according to research, the platform is still by far the most secure mobile OS around. Altimeter Group and Bloor Research (on behalf of Trend Micro) did a pretty in-depth analysis of the strengths and weaknesses in the security features of each of the big 4 mobile platforms - BlackBerry, iOS, Android and Windows Phone - and found that BlackBerry is still by far the most secure.

RIM's hardware department could be losing money

RIM's hardware department could be losing money

Posted on Apr 12, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

RIM is going down quickly and the latest financials made it obvious even for the most loyal ‘Berry fans. Adding salt to the wound, a bunch of top level executives started leaving the company, and to make matters even worse now, the Canadian company’s latest regulatory filing, reveals that RIM’s hardware department is probably losing money.
For RIM’s fiscal year ending February 2012 gross margins slumped to 20%, down from 36% on a GAAP basis. Jefferies analyst Peter Misek theorizes that after accounting for operating costs and inventory charges, this results in a loss.
According to the analyst, RIM’s hardware department is in the red: -8% on a GAAP basis, -3% on a non-GAAP basis, or -4% on an...

The stabbing at RIM's party for BlackBerry Messenger has resulted in further tragedy as London's Metropolitan Police have reported that the victim has died of his wounds. Philip Sherriff, one of RIM's UK employees, passed on early Sunday. His attacker is believed to be Ashley Charles and has already been charged with attempted murder.
The motivations behind the attack, if any, weren't made clear and may be limited to the court.
RIM in a statement through Twitter gave its condolences. "Our thoughts are with his family and those close to him and we ask for the respect of their privacy at this difficult time," the company said.

US Gov't won't ditch BlackBerry, security paramount

Recently, we heard reports about agencies inside the US Government ready to make the switch to the iPhone, and in some places Android could also have been considered, but now a Washington Post article reports that President Obama and the whole administration have to and will stick to their BlackBerries. Why? It’s all about security, not wants, and while many would like to make the switch to the now more popular iPhone and Android devices, they remain bound to the ‘Berries.
"We appreciate RIM’s focus on security, which is paramount for government use,” Casey Coleman, chief information officer at the General Services Administration (GSA), explained.

RIM finally finds someone crazy enough to buy it

RIM finally finds someone crazy enough to buy it

Prepare yourself for perhaps the greatest single press release ever unleashed onto the tech industry. "Self-proclaimed" Dr. Nono C. Pearson, a country-style rap innovator who reputedly has "the copyrights to prove that he is the owner of what he calls 'Corporate Hip Hop,'" is approaching RIM with a proposal to buy out its "Black Berry" assets. This is to be done by an all-stock acquisition following the upcoming IPO of his not-yet-public company called United Vision Marketing Firm.
That's right, a dude with more chutzpah than sense or money has published a press release announcing his intent to take over the entire BlackBerry business. The thing is, while we may find this amusing now — and i...

RIM launches BlackBerry Mobile Fusion

RIM launches BlackBerry Mobile Fusion

Posted on Apr 04, 2012 by MG3

RIM announced BlackBerry Mobile Fusion last November, a new enterprise service that will allow companies to manage multiple types of devices from a single, web-based interface, and the company says the service will launch today. The service can manage smartphones running BlackBerry 7 or earlier, PlayBook tablets, and tablets and smartphones running Android and iOS. RIM says that Mobile Fusion will allow IT managers to activate and configure devices and profiles for various phones, enable access to enterprise services, deploy apps, and detect jailbreaks and roots. RIM hasn't traditionally provided much support for competing devices over the years, but Mobile Fusion is probably a necessary con...

Hit them when they're down: RIM sued for alleged patent infringement

Like a vulture circling around its prey, it seems that some tech companies are surrounding RIM, hoping to be the straw that breaks the camel's back. For example, NXP Semiconductors NV filed suit against RIM on Tuesday claiming that some of the Canadian tech manufacturer's BlackBerry smartphones and its PlayBook tablet infringe on its intellectual property.
Not only did NXP file the suit, they decided to make the filing in U.S. District Court in Orlando, Florida. Is it more than a coincidence that RIM's annual BlackBerry World conference will be held in that very city next month? During the BlackBerry Jam part of the conference, RIM will be giving away 2,000 BlackBerry 10 prototype handsets t...

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins reportedly 'clearing house,' laying off numerous executives

Posted on Mar 30, 2012 by MG1

With BlackBerry World only weeks away and RIM's earnings report merely hours away, it looks as if newly-appointed CEO Thorsten Heins will be leading it with quite the bang. While Heins has done a truly exceptional job of laying low (really low) during his first few months in the corner office, he's evidently been hard at work rearranging chairs... mentally, at least. According to The Globe and Mail's Iain Marlow, a trusted source has informed him that the BlackBerry maker's head honcho has begun "clearing house," with senior vice presidents and VP-level executives being informed of the imminent changes today. We're tracking down more on the story right now and will update this post as detail...

RIM's latest patent details automatic volume adjustments based on handset placement

That moment when you physically hurt your ear by mashing your cellphone up against it in a futile bid to hear the person on the other end. That's the very moment that RIM's gunning to make history with its latest patent, which was filed way back in November of 2007 but just granted today. The BlackBerry-maker's patent describes an adjustable acoustic speaker output "based on an estimated degree of seal of an ear about a speaker port" -- effectively a system where the volume can automatically increase if a handset jostles further from your ear. Not surprisingly, the description details "at least one touch sensor" used for detecting the distance between one's ear and the device, and the connec...
