Mobile security researchers present Android Malware Genome Project at IEEE

Mobile security researchers present Android Malware Genome Project at IEEE

Posted on May 23, 2012 by MG2

Android's openness, combined with its popularity, has lead a few of the developer faithful astray -- with malware being a legitimate concern for the mobile operating system. To help combat the issue, Xuxian Jiang, an NC State researcher, has created the Android Malware Genome Project, which was presented at the IEEE Symposium on Security this week. The aim is to collect and analyse all the known malicious software, and share the findings so that more effective and preventative measures to be taken by the community. Jiang claims that the main drawback has been understanding the malware, and getting access to examples, something the project aims to solve. More than 1,200 malware samples have b...

Google made some waves back in August when it purchased Motorola Mobility, starting mass speculation about the future of Android. Google has announced that the acquisition has now been completed, just a few days after China approved the deal.

Motorola Ice Cream Sandwich update -- DROID 3 and DROID X2 left in the dark

Posted on May 22, 2012 by MG1

Motorola recently updated its Android release timeline and revealed that certain devices will remain on Android 2.3 rather than receiving an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The handsets in question are both modern and more than capable of running the latest Android operating system, however the vendor claims the latest software won’t “improve” the devices, and that’s why updates will not be released. Both the DROID 3 and DROID X2 will remain on Android 2.3, despite the fact that both handsets run dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors and were released not even a year ago.

It looks as though Google Chrome has finally pipped Microsoft's Internet Explorer to the most-used web browser post according to Stat Counter's figures.
Last we heard from Stat Counter, Chrome had zipped past Firefox in the global web use stakes but was still nipping at IE's heels.
But that was December 2011 and in the intervening months Chrome has gone from strength to strength despite IE9's intervening launch and mega-bucks marketing campaign.

Google given “matter of weeks” to fix antitrust issues

Google has been the subject of an antitrust investigation in Europe since 2010, and the search giant may soon begin to feel the heat. The European Union’s antitrust chief has told Google that solutions to the antitrust concerns should be offered in a “matter of weeks”. Joaquin Almunia, the EU Competition Commissioner, says that Google has expressed its intent to cooperate fully on several occasions, and has decided to put that to the test.

Government blasted for 'cosy' relationship with Google

Google has an 'extraordinarily close relationship' with David Cameron's government, according to a scathing report in the Daily Mail.
The traditionally Tory-leaning newspaper expresses concern at the amount of meetings - at least one per month - between the search giant and the government since it took office in 2010.
The 23 meetings, which include three with the PM and four with chancellor George Osborne "increases concerns that the internet giant has the ear of the Government on a host of sensitive topics," the paper says.

China clears Google acquisition of Motorola, eliminates last barrier to Googorola bliss

The final significant roadblock to Google's buyout of Motorola has been cleared, as Chinese regulators have just given their rubber stamp. Their approval follows a few months after the simultaneous American and European clearances, and virtually all that's left now is to formally close the deal and start integrating the two mobile giants. It might still come too late for the combined entity to present a united front at Google I/O, but at least they won't have any awkward glances at each other across the room. We're just trying to decide on whether or not Googorola is the best pet name for the loving, $12.5 billion-dollar Android union.

Google Music users granted de-authentication reprieve as company retools activation system

Google Music users granted de-authentication reprieve as company retools activation system

Google Music users learned of a frightful new policy this morning that dictates a user may de-authorize only four devices in a year, out of ten total activations. While the policy is likely to go unnoticed by the majority of consumers, it instantly created a great pain for those who regularly flash ROMs to their phones and tablets. It seems the road to de-authorization hell is paved with good intentions, however, as Google has since responded to critics with the revelation that it'll introduce an activation system that accounts for such nuances.
We've determined through our own experimentation that Google has temporarily suspended the de-authorization limit of four devices, and while it's di...

Rumor has Google Chrome coming to iOS this quarter

Google Chrome has made a big splash in a relatively short time in the desktop market, and although it is only available for Android 4.x devices right now, it also quickly placed itself in the upper echelon of Android browsers. Now, rumor has it that Google is getting ready to release the Chrome browser on iOS devices as well.
Macquarie Equity Research is not only sure that Google will release a version of Chrome for iOS, but that the app will be coming this quarter, which means sometime by the end of June. Macquarie sites not only the popularity of the other versions of Chrome on different platforms, but says that releasing an iOS version would limit the amount of traffic acquisition cost (T...

Google releases Chrome 19 with tab syncing across multiple computers and Android devices

Google releases Chrome 19 with tab syncing across multiple computers and Android devices

Posted on May 16, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google's been working hard lately at adding tab syncing to Chrome — first, the Chrome beta for Android synced tabs between an Android 4.0 handset and a computer browser, then a recent beta of Chrome for the desktop offered the option to sync tabs between multiple computers. Now, Chrome 19 has been officially released as a "stable" version, and with it will come the option to sync their open tabs across multiple computers as well as an Android 4.0 phone with the Chrome beta app installed. Just as Google cautioned when tab syncing arrived in the Chrome beta desktop version, the tab-syncing feature will roll out "more gradually in the coming weeks" — so if you're not able to sync your tabs yet,...

Android made Java-free thanks to 'XobotOS' project, but what are the legal implications?

Posted on May 16, 2012 by MG1

Software firm Xamarin has ported the Java code inside Android (over a million lines of it) to C#, creating an entirely freestanding operating system that it calls "XobotOS." C# — which began as a Microsoft project over a decade ago and now dominates non-native programming throughout much of the Windows ecosystem — is very close both in spirit and language structure to Java, which makes porting between the two a somewhat reasonable undertaking. To get it done quickly and make sure that Xamarin could keep up with Android's evolution, it automated the port using a modified version of the Java-to-C# tool Sharpen. "We knew we wanted to be able to stay up to date with new releases of Android," Xam...

T-Mobile gives HTC Sensation 4G users an Ice Cream Sandwich treat on May 16, Amaze 4G within weeks

Posted on May 16, 2012 by MG1

T-Mobile subscribers waiting on pins and needles for the day their HTC Sensation 4G or Amaze 4G will get its Android 4.0 update don't have to sit so uncomfortably for much longer: the carrier has just narrowed down the timetables considerably. The first wave of owners will get its Ice Cream Sandwich just desserts on May 16th, when Sensation 4G owners can push Android 4.0.3 to their dual-core 2011 flagships. Amaze 4G users have a looser timeframe of the "coming weeks" to dig in. Either circumstance will see HTC slap on Sense 3.6 like it has with other pre-2012 device updates, so don't expect a full One S-like Sense 4.0 experience. Do, however, expect to pay an extra $15 per month for hotspot ...

Google Nexus tablet tipped in Samsung codes

Google Nexus tablet tipped in Samsung codes

Posted on May 15, 2012 by MG1

There’s a whole new wave of evidence this week being revealed by none other than Google that points toward them working with Samsung on the next Android Nexus tablet. A Nexus device, for those of you that do not know, is a device that works with Google’s Android in its most basic “vanilla” iteration, and with the evidence we’re seeing today, we may be looking at a Samsung tablet released this summer as the next step. This next Nexus tablet will be the first tablet actually branded as “Nexus” but will be the second released in close collaboration with Google made to show off the next big version of Android, the first being the Motorola XOOM tablet which showed off Android 3.0 Honeycomb.
