HTC Sensation XL getting its Ice Cream Sandwich dessert

HTC Sensation XL getting its Ice Cream Sandwich dessert

Posted on May 29, 2012 by MG3

Users of the HTC Sensation XL, mostly in Europe and Asia, have received the Android 4.0 update over the air. To make sure you have received it, go to Settings > About phone > Software updates and hit that button. You will be downloading a 200MB package which means those with a strict data cap might want to wait for a Wi-Fi connection before installing it. The exact build that you will be updating to is Android 4.0.3 while HTC Sense remains at 3.6. This brings users some of the new ICS features like Face Unlock, the new app dock and the multi-tasking menu. What you won't be getting is the new UI found on devices carrying HTC Sense 4.0.

CyanogenMod Android hack hits 2 million installs

Posted on May 29, 2012 by MG3

The hacked and completely fan-made Android-based ROM known as CyanogenMod has reached a massive 2 million installs this week, reminding us that it is far and away the most successful Android 3rd party system of all time. This update comes only a few months after CyanogenMod reached 1 million installs, the Google mobile OS-based hack growing now as what appears to be an exponential rate. The install rate is tracked by the CyanogenMod team’s own CM stat tracker which shows also that the last 24 hours have had an additional 11,294 installs as well.

Google Play is introducing both monthly or annual subscription options. Both are offered on an auto-renewing basis, businesses can set the price and billing interval, and Google Play manages all purchase transactions on their behalf, just as it does other in-app products and purchases.
Speaking on the Google Android Developers blog, Ibrahim Elbouchikhi, Product Manager on the Google Play team said "Developers can use them to monetize premium dynamic content such as journals and magazines, but they can also use them to sell access to bundled products, game levels, music and video content, value-added services, or any other digital content."

Google snaps up HP's webOS Enyo team

HP may have hit the skids, but Google has swooped in and rescued one of its projects.
Google has hired the team working on the webOS Enyo HTML5 development project. About half a dozen people will move from HP to Google, and will start next month.
Enyo is an HTML5 framework for making apps. HP is in the process of making it open-source, meaning anyone can use the tech, much like Google's Android operating system.
There was no deal between Google and HP. Rather, Google hired each worker individually, having been in talks with them over the last month.

Microsoft asked Google to remove search results that remain alive and well on Bing

Google has issued a new report showing that it receives more than 1.2 million takedown requests for search results each month. The chief complainer, by a wide margin, is Microsoft, who claimed a copyright violation on over 500,000 of those infringing search results. But using Google's new transparency tool, which lets anyone sift through the takedown requests, Techdirt discovered that links to pirated Xbox content, which Google took down at Microsoft's request, remain alive and well on Microsoft's Bing search engine.

Have we finally found a tablet match for the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note? ViewSonic sent around a teaser for its "Touch and Connect" series prototypes, including a 22-inch "smart business tablet monitor," powered by what appears to be Ice Cream Sandwich. The giant touch-enabled device will be joined by a Windows 8 multi-touch display, new cloud computing solutions, high-end laser projectors and some interactive electronic billboards -- all set to make their debut on June 5th at Computex. More details will no-doubt be forthcoming in Taipei, so do stay tuned. And you may want to hold off on those giant tablet acquisitions in the meantime -- we have less than two weeks to wait for what could just be t...

Google search users have begun seeing messages at the top of search results informing them that their computers are infected and that they could lose the ability to connect to the internet in the future.
The message looks at first like the sort of malicious pop-up frequently seen when surfing the web's shady underbelly, but on closer inspection is revealed to come straight from Google.
"Your computer appears to be infected," the warning reads.
"We believe that your computer is infected with malicious software. If you don't take action, you might not be able to connect to the internet in the future."

Google Wallet: one year later

Google Wallet: one year later

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG2

The rumors and leaks go back a bit further, but it was a year ago today that Google officially revealed its Google Wallet mobile payment service -- a platform that the company is still betting big on, even if it may be slightly reconsidering the way it does business. While it might not have taken off quite as quickly as Google would have liked, the past year has still been a fairly eventful one for the service -- albeit occasionally for reasons the company would prefer you forget -- and the next year proves to be even more challenging as the service faces increased competition. Read on for a look back at how we got here, and what lies ahead for both Google Wallet and mobile payments in gener...

Xperia Play Ice Cream Sandwich update canned?

Xperia Play Ice Cream Sandwich update canned?

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Blimey. After a concerted effort to right its wrongs has had us retracting our previously harsh words about Sony and its Android updates, things are all starting to unravel once again. A bagful of Sony Ericsson handsets are still destined for an Android 4.0 upgrade, but has the Xperia Play just fallen off the wagon?
The Sony Mobile website’s list of upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich updates is missing one key player. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play seems to have slipped off the list, which still includes the likes of the Xperia Pro, Xperia Arc and Xperia Ray.

Intel releases native x86 Android 4.0 emulator for faster app debugging

Intel releases native x86 Android 4.0 emulator for faster app debugging

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Android developers have gotten a nice surprise today: an Android 4.0 x86 image has been released for the platform's software development kit. For the vast majority of people developing on computers that use x86 processors, the update will let the emulator run at native speeds and with fewer bugs, since it will be running native x86 code rather than code from the ARM platform. Developers can install it by refreshing the SDK Manager, then selecting the x86 image under Android 4.0.3. Downloading the image may take some time due to high demand, though. For developers, this means a better system for building and testing apps. Intel's x86 architecture is ubiquitous, and this upgrade will complemen...

Google+ for Android update brings new look, now lets you start Hangouts from a phone

Google updated the Google+ iOS app recently with a complete visual overhaul, and now the company's brought the new look to Android as well – plus a few unique tricks. For one, version 2.6 of Google+ for Android now allows you to start a Hangout directly from your phone; you could previously join a Hangout in progress, but you couldn't actually initiate one unless you used the separate Messenger app. The new feature means you can choose a Hangout instead of a phone call or Skype call, which is a nice move for Google — the "incoming Hangout" screen even looks like you're answering a phone call.

Google snags the webOS Enyo team, HP says open source plans are still on schedule

Google snags the webOS Enyo team, HP says open source plans are still on schedule

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG2

At one time the Enyo app framework was supposed to help webOS run faster and on a wider variety of devices, but as HP continues to struggle, reports have surfaced from The Verge and AllThingsD that much of the team behind it, including leader Matthew McNulty, has been hired away by Google. Numbering a half dozen or so, the immediate danger is the effect this might have on HP's efforts to open source webOS, but in a statement the company indicated it remains on track and will stick to the roadmap it announced in January. Less clear is what these employees might end up working on for Google, although Enyo's focus on web apps and HTML5 suggests the possibility they'll end up working on ChromeOS...

Sprint discontinues Nexus S 4G

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Sprint has officially discontinued sales of the Nexus S 4G, we've learned. The recent release of the Galaxy Nexus would be the obvious reason for the move, though some Sprint customers (and Android fans) may still mourn the passing of its predecessor — we've heard many smartphone users say they prefer the 4-inch form factor, and the recent upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich kept it as relevant as ever.
