Barnes & Noble calls for US investigation into Microsoft

Barnes & Noble calls for US investigation into Microsoft

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

With Barnes & Noble unveiling its latest foray into the Android world recently with the new Nook Tablet, it will soon be hit with more demands to pay Microsoft. Just about every major firm that has fielded an Android device has now signed up with Microsoft to license the Android patents that the software giant holds. Microsoft has already accused B&N of patent infringement on some of the Nook readers B&N sells.

Barnes & Noble asked Justice Department to go after Microsoft in response to Android patent lawsuits

Barnes & Noble asked Justice Department to go after Microsoft in response to Android patent lawsuits

Posted on Nov 09, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's strategy of demanding patent license fees from major Android device makers has been resoundingly successful in recent months, but that doesn't mean it's not controversial: the Wall Street Journal says Barnes & Noble has asked the Justice Department for an antitrust investigation into Redmond's attempts to "kill off" Android devices from smaller players with license fees and lawsuits. B&N told the government over the summer that "Microsoft's willingness to bully small players with expensive litigation raises a substantial barrier to entry" because only big companies can afford to pay the license fees. Unfortunately, we don't know how much Microsoft asks in fees, so we can't really...

Barnes & Noble asks feds to look at Microsoft's Android patent licensing tactics

Posted on Nov 09, 2011 by MG1

Bloomberg is reporting today that bookseller and Android tablet maker Barnes & Noble has asked U.S. regulators to investigate Microsoft's tactics in demanding patent royalties from manufacturers of Android-based smartphones and tablets.
In a letter sent to the Department of Justice's chief counsel for competition policy, Gene Kimmelman, the company claimed that "Microsoft is embarking on a campaign of asserting trivial and outmoded patents against manufacturers of Android devices" and "Microsoft is attempting to raise its rivals' costs in order to drive out competition and to deter innovation in mobile devices."
Microsoft filed a patent infringement suit against Barnes & Noble back in March ...

Barnes & Noble launches Nook Tablet, lights a fire under Amazon

Barnes & Noble launches Nook Tablet, lights a fire under Amazon

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Yep, we had a feeling this one was coming. As expected, bookstore mega-chain Barnes & Noble has launched its answer to Amazon's Kindle Fire (and to a lesser extent, Kobo's multimedia Vox slate) -- also as expected, the thing looks an awful lot like its predecessor, the recently discounted Nook Color, right down to the metal bar on the bottom corner. Granted, B&N did already make the leap into the tablet space, when the Nook Color was upgraded earlier this year -- but the Nook Tablet brings more than just a new name, of course.

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 details leaked, may land November 16th for $250

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 details leaked, may land November 16th for $250

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

Barnes & Noble is holding a press conference in New York City on Monday and it looks like the rumors surrounding a possible Nook Color 2 announcement could be true. According to Engadget, which recently published a purported image of the new device along with specs, the Nook Color 2 will look identical to the current model. The tablet reportedly sports a 7-inch IPS color display with a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution, 16GB of storage, a dual-core TI OMAP 4 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM and more. Interestingly, Barnes & Noble may charge $250 for the Nook Color 2, which is $50 more expensive than Amazon’s $199 Kindle Fire. Engadget says the unit will hit stores on November 16th but that ...

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 reportedly launching on November 7th

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 reportedly launching on November 7th

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Barnes & Noble may release the successor to its Nook Color Android tablet on November 7th, according to The Digital Reader. Reportedly, the bookseller is preparing an entire new “Nook” department of its brick and mortar stores, which will include LED TVs and point-of-sale systems for shoppers interested in buying the eReader on the spot. It is unclear what sort of specs the Nook Color 2 will feature, although we suspect the device will run Android and its screen will be similar to the 7-inch screen on the original Nook Color. Additionally, we wouldn’t be surprised if Barnes & Noble lowered the price of the $249 Nook Color 2 down to $199 so that it will compete better with Amazon’s $199 Kindl...

NOOK Color expands to Target Superstore nationwide

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

Today Barnes & Noble have announced their newest sales partner for the NOOK Color and what’s now called the NOOK Simple Touch Reader. It is Target, the superstore based right here in my home city of Minneapolis, with both versions of the NOOK now available at Target stores nationwide. This makes the NOOK one of the most widely in-store available ereaders on the circuit, currently sitting in stores at Best Buy, Books-A-Million, Fred Meyer, Office Max, P.C. Richard & Sons, Radio Shack, Staples, Target, Walmart, and of course Barnes & Noble. This addition began on October 2nd and you should start to see the tablets in stores across the USA soon.

RadioShack soon carrying Barnes and Noble Nook and Nook Color

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG1

Right on cue before another big release from Barnes & Noble in the form of a autumn release of the Nook Color 2 comes a brand new carrier for the massively popular electronic reader. This announcement contains both the original Nook which is priced currently at $139 and the Nook Color which is currently set at $249. Both devices will be available at RadioShack soon, while onlookers see this as a move toward a more broad coverage of mobile computing devices at the retail chain.
This past Sunday was also the final closing of the doors of Borders, one of Barnes & Noble’s biggest competitors. Whether or not this was due directly to the fact that they didn’t bring their A game to the eReader cour...

Thinking about getting an e-reader before you head back to school this fall? Barnes & Noble surely hopes so, and to sweeten the deal it's offering 12 free classics along with study guides and apps if you register your freshly unboxed Nook before October 31st. That's right folks, over $100 worth of e-books can be yours with the purchase of the new Nook, the Nook Color or even the first edition Nook. While it must be said that most of the available titles are out of copyright and so are already available for free download elsewhere (we're looking at you, Gutenberg.org), you can at least select from a dozen Spark Notes of time-consuming reads such as War and Peace. So if you're looking to take ...

Does Apple have any interest in buying Barnes & Noble?

Does Apple have any interest in buying Barnes & Noble?

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

We received a tip from an unproven source claiming to have knowledge of discussions within Apple to possibly purchase Barnes & Noble. While this might seem like a strange move at first, it actually makes a whole lot of sense. Apple would be able to take Barnes & Noble’s vast digital library of books and publications, and fold them into Apple’s own iBooks store. Apple would have no use for the NOOK, and that would likely be discontinued in this scenario. Apple could then convert some of the brick and mortar Barnes & Noble stores into Apple stores and close the rest. It’s out there, and with a price most likely around $1 billion to $1.5 billion, it might be a stretch (though it would barely ma...

Barnes & Noble responds to Amazon with Nook iPad app update

Barnes & Noble responds to Amazon with Nook iPad app update

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

Just as Amazon revealed that it will be offering its iPad app Kindle users access to newspapers and magazines, rival Barnes & Noble has done the same with an announcement that periodical access for its iPad Nook app will come "in the coming days".
The app gives users access to 175 magazines and newspapers although, like the updated Kindle app, Nook has also refused to toe the line with Apple's in-app subscription guidelines. It has removed the Nook store link from the app, and is now offering purchases from the browser at www.nooknewsstand.com.
An update to the Nook for Kids iPad app also sees iPad users, or users' kids that should be, get access to the Nook kids collection - over 550 digita...

Barnes & Noble NOOK Color leads eReader market for first time ever, IDC states

Barnes & Noble NOOK Color leads eReader market for first time ever, IDC states

Posted on Jul 12, 2011 by MG1

IDC recently published a report that provided a snapshot view of the tablet and eReader markets. The company noted that in the first quarter, for the first time ever, Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Color lead the eReader pack ahead of Amazon’s Kindle. Even though Barnes & Noble just introduced the “all new NOOK,” a black and white device, IDC says that the lack of a color screen on Amazon’s Kindle “clearly impacted the company’s previous dominance in the eReader market.” The research firm also found that the eReader market declined to just 2.2 million units shipped in the first quarter, and said that the “post-holiday season proved to be challenging” for the eReader market. IDC still expects the glob...

NOOK Beats Kindle For The Very First Time On Consumer Reports

NOOK Beats Kindle For The Very First Time On Consumer Reports

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

The e-reader competition between the Barnes & Noble Nook and the Amazon Kindle has always left the former with a bruised ego. But with the latest “All-New Nook” (also known as the Simple Touch) unveiled earlier this month, things have taken a turn. For the very first time, Consumer Reports has nudged the Nook ahead of the Kindle in its e-reader rankings.
We had our hands-on and unboxing of the All-New Nook and definitely liked the more simplified form factor. Gone are the dual screens and distracting features of the first edition Nook for an All-New Nook that provides a more purist reading experience.
