4.8-inch Acer Iconia Smart finally hitting shelves

4.8-inch Acer Iconia Smart finally hitting shelves

Posted on Sep 16, 2011 by MG1

You might remember the Acer Iconia Smart as the ultra-long handset that was the first to stun our minds with a 4.8-inch screen and a 21:9 aspect ratio. Now, in mere couple of months the smartphone display realities have changed and while we’re still impressed, we’re not necessarily stunned. The Iconia Smart has picked this exact time to finally hit shelves at UK online retailer Expansys, sporting a price tag of nearly $615 (389 pounds) off contract .
The phone has kept a low-profile but it’s been almost as long in the making as the Droid Bionic. The handset was introduced in February at MWC and that’s where we took it for a spin, so don’t hesitate to check our hands-on preview of the Acer I...

Microsoft adds Acer, ViewSonic to its patent licensees

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG3

The list of Microsoft’s Android licensees has just grown by two - one of the largest PC makers, Acer, as well as ViewSonic will have to pay the Redmond-based company fees for every Android device they make. For Acer the deal includes both smartphones and tablets, while ViewSonic has agreed to paid for both its Android and Chrome OS-based phones and tablets. The latter hints that ViewSonic will indeed make tablets running on Chrome OS.

Acer won’t move to ARM processors until Windows 8 lands according to source

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

Acer was at IFA last weekend and one of the coolest products that the company showed off was the Ultrabook Aspire S3 that uses Intel’s new ultra mobile platform to combine portability with performance. There have been rumors swirling for a while that Acer would be offering machines using ARM processors as well to help it be able to produce cheaper notebooks. An ARM processor combined with a lower cost OS would make for an interesting computer indeed.
ARMdevices reports that a product strategy manager for Acer said at IFA that Acer would not be offering ARM processors inside notebooks in the short term. The unnamed source claims that ARM processors won’t show up inside Acer gear until Windows...

Acer says Google-Motorola deal "a good gift to Microsoft"

Acer says Google-Motorola deal "a good gift to Microsoft"

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft will end up being the big winner after Google’s acquisition of Motorola as other Android phone makers will be alienated by the prospect of rivaling with Google - this statement is not a fact, but comes from a senior executive over at Acer.
"They work against some of their clients," Walter Deppeler, Acer's Europe, Middle East and Africa operations president said. "It was a good gift to Microsoft," he added in an interview for Reuters at IFA.
With that in mind, Acer, which recently slipped from being the second-largest PC maker in the world, would be careful when placing its bets on a particular mobile platform. The company would first consider implications of the $12.5 billion Googl...

Acer W14 shows up at IFA

Acer W14 shows up at IFA

Posted on Sep 05, 2011 by MG1

AreaMobile.de has just stumbled across this new Acer Windows Phone 7 handset at IFA in Germany.
The Acer W14 is a 1 Ghz device with an unknown megapixel camera, 8 GB storage and 512 MB RAM running Windows Phone 7 Mango.
Obviously not a particularly high end device, I like that the phone does try to make some concession to style with its smoothly curved back.
No other detail of the handset is available, but I expect the handset should see some distribution in Asia soon.

Acer's Ultrabook S3 up for pre-order on Italian site, is this the Aspire 3951? -

We caught a sneak peek of Acer's Aspire 3951 Ultrabook in the wild a few days ago, and now we have some unofficial specs and pricing to complement the svelte laptop. A report over on Notebook Italia points to an Italian retailer's live pre-order page for an Ultrabook S3 -- naming that matches the Aspire S branding on the company's IFA booth. The notebook, listed as retailing for around 786 euros (or $1,133), is purported to include a Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM, 320GB of storage and an additional 20GB SSD. Much has been made of ASUS' and Intel's desire to hit the Ultrabook market at a sub-$1000 price point and, currency conversion aside, it's looking like Acer could also hit that target for i...

Acer chairman JT Wang says tablet fever is cooling

Acer chairman JT Wang says tablet fever is cooling

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsAcer

The sales of tablets are still growing rapidly on the computer market today. Tablets are taking a big chunk of buyers that would otherwise go to notebooks leaving companies with margins that don’t look good in the wake of sales decreases. Acer announced a quarterly loss for Q2 and the loss was blamed on the success of the iPad. Despite the Acer loss being laid at the feet of a tablet, Acer’s chairman JT Wang says that tablet fever is already cooling.
I think that is wishful thinking on Wang’s part at this point. The sales of Acer and other brands of tablets may be cooling, but the iPad has shown little signs of letting up. Wang also thinks that consumers will be wooed back to notebooks with ...

Acer Aspire 3951 photos leaked, new Ultrabooks to launch in September

We don't mind eyeballing a few impossibly clean renders when we get wind of a new toy, but there's nothing like the real McCoy. Today's bones slipped out of a (now pulled) HDblog hands-on of the Acer Aspire 3951 Ultrabook, possibly leaked ahead of an IFA 2011 embargo. The genuine article looks nearly identical to its rendered counterpart, albeit a bit thicker and more plasticky. The unveiled 13.3-inch MacBook Air competitor reportedly sports a second generation Intel Core processor, boots from sleep in under two seconds, and is only 13mm thick.

Acer TravelMate Timeline 8481T isn't an Ultrabook, It Just Looks Like One

Posted on Aug 25, 2011 by MG15

Acer isn't pitching its new TravelMate Timeline 8481T as an Ultrabook, but maybe that's because Intel is still finalizing its list of qualifications. As it stands, the 8481T is a 14-inch ultraportable that weighs just 3.7 pounds and struts around with a 0.87-inch profile, and that's with the 8-cell battery Acer says will provide up to 13 hours of run time. And though the LCD measures 14 inches, Acer trimmed the bezel by a third so that it would fit in a 13.3-inch footprint.

It may be the second largest computer manufacturer in the world, but things are not looking good for Acer. The Taiwanese company lost 6.79 billion New Taiwan Dollars (TWD), about $234.1 million, in Q2, far more than the already sizable anticipated shortfall of 3.3 billion TWD (around $114.7 million). That's a dramatic drop off from the 1.19 billion TWD profit the company posted in Q1. Things are expected to improve in Q3, but Acer still expects to operating in the red until at least Q4.

Acer M310 Windows Phone said to have HDMI-out, 8GB storage

Filed in: Cell PhonesAcerW4

We first heard about the existence of the Acer M310 Windows Phone last week, but literally no information was given besides the fact that two test units were discovered on a developer's traffic sheet. How about a few more shreds of meat to chew on? According to WindowsPhoneNZ, the Mango device was sighted at TechEd New Zealand with HDMI-out support. We may be seeing this feature across a large variety of Windows Phones coming out this fall, as the HTC Eternity has been rumored to include video output via HDMI as well. The observer claims the M310 has a "black shiny look" and "bevelled edges," has a similar appearance to the Acer W4 (shown in the above image), and includes DLNA support over W...

Acer MacBook Air rival now due September, redesigned twice

Acer MacBook Air rival now due September, redesigned twice

Posted on Aug 22, 2011 by MG15

Acer's answer to the current MacBook Air, the Aspire 3951, has had its release moved up to September, a story in Taiwan's Commercial Times. Once thought due in December, the 'ultrabook' would move up to September. The ostensible goal was to compete with the ASUS UX21 and not necessarily Apple.

An unnamed executive added that the company had been frantically reworking the design. Its internals had supposedly been reworked twice. Only a 13-inch version would be available at first, eliminating the prospects of a system that would go head-to-head with the 11-inch UX21 and similarly sized MacBook Air.

The fact that Nokia and Acer are busily preparing Windows Phones is no secret, but Sea Ray and W4 may not be the manufacturers' only projects. Elbert Perez, a Windows Phone game developer with a keen eye for statistics, was looking through a list of the various devices that run his games, and a couple gems stood out -- the Nokia 800 and Acer M310.
