CSIRO snatches $220m windfall in WiFi patent dispute with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

CSIRO snatches $220m windfall in WiFi patent dispute with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization keeps bowling 'em over -- in the courtroom, anyway -- with its hardy WiFi patent. The government-funded research group has chalked up another $220 million win after AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Acer, Lenovo and Sony each agreed to establish licenses with the litigious group. CSIRO now holds agreements with 23 companies and has pocketed more than $430 million from its courtroom activities. Australian Senator Chris Evans estimates that 90 percent of the industry is now paying licensing fees for the technology, but with the patent set to expire next year, we'd be mighty paranoid to be among that final ten percent. You'll find ...

The AT&T Windows Phone support forums is where word broke that the company would not support Microsoft’s 8107 update that addresses the disappearing keyboard issue and a variety of other security fixes. Needless to say, it turned into a torch and pitchfork scene over there rather quickly.
Beginning on Saturday night, reports started coming in that complaint posts were being deleted without warning or reason. Many users stated that when they clicked on the email notifications for the posts they were subscribed to, the replies were mysteriously deleted.

Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T to support Visual Voicemail, but other Windows Phone users may not get it

Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T to support Visual Voicemail, but other Windows Phone users may not get it

Posted on Mar 26, 2012 by MG1

As we fully expected, the comments on our recent post about AT&T's apparent decision to not push out the lastest bugfix version of Windows Phone, 8107, have expressed a good deal of unhappiness. However, one comment in particular caught our eye, from scrapplejoe, which points out a thread at neogaf suggesting Visual Voicemail is present on the Lumia 900. In fact, there's an even deeper backstory involving a method of forced updating and clever data plan switching first discovered at xda-developers, with which it's possible to get Visual Voicemail working on a Nokia Lumia 800, Focus Flash, or even other devices on AT&T. The trick primarily requires two things: enabling a 4G LTE plan on AT&T (...

AT&T rolls out Android 4.0 to HTC Vivid, other devices getting ICS in the 'coming months'

AT&T rolls out Android 4.0 to HTC Vivid, other devices getting ICS in the 'coming months'

Posted on Mar 23, 2012 by MG1

Be still our beating heart. Just two weeks ago we heard Android 4.0 -- that upgrade lovingly referred to as Ice Cream Sandwich -- would be reaching the HTC Vivid "in the coming weeks." We even saw the update trickle in to select devices last week without any official notice from the mother ship. AT&T's finally ready to open the floodgates and pour the refresh out to the masses. This download in particular includes Sense 3.6, but throws in third-party Beats Audio support -- a feature that until now has only been seen in version 4.0. If you're packing a Vivid, just make sure you're hooked up to WiFi and head to the settings to get your download on. If it doesn't find the update yet, you also h...

Rumor: AT&T to launch the Nokia Lumia 900 on April 8th?

Rumor: AT&T to launch the Nokia Lumia 900 on April 8th?

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone, the Lumia 900, was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show back in January of this year. AT&T said they would offer it, but they failed to mention when it would actually hit store shelves or say how much it’s going to cost. Here we are, two months later, and we still don’t have those details. Earlier rumors suggested it would come out on the 18th of March, which is this coming Sunday, but now there’s word on the street that an April 8th launch date is more likely. This information comes from someone who claims to be an employee at one of AT&T’s retail stores in California.

AT&T version of Samsung GALAXY Note hacked to work on T-Mobile's 4G pipeline

AT&T version of Samsung GALAXY Note hacked to work on T-Mobile's 4G pipeline

Posted on Mar 14, 2012 by MG1

If you have been watching those Samsung GALAXY Note ads on television, or know someone with the "phablet," you might ask why others get all of the fun. If the problem is that you're an AT&T customer and don't have an upgrade at this time, and you don't want to pay the retail price, well there is not much anyone can do for you outside of giving you the money you need to buy the device. On the other hand, if the problem is merely that you are a T-Mobile customer, there is some hope for you.
Thanks to those Mensa members at XDA developers, there is a hack that will allow you to use the AT&T version of the Samsung GALAXY Note (i717) on the 4G network belonging to the fourth largest carrier in th...

The second largest cell phone company in the United States has worked at a rapid pace when it comes to bolstering its cell phone service on the 3G and 4G LTE front — especially with its recent attempts to acquire more spectrum.

AT&T relents on unlimited data throttling, increases cap to 3GB for HSPA+ and 5GB for LTE

AT&T relents on unlimited data throttling, increases cap to 3GB for HSPA+ and 5GB for LTE

Posted on Mar 02, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

AT&T has announced today that it is retooling the throttling policy on its unlimited smartphone data plan, a legacy offering still in use by many customers — largely because it was long the standard-issue package sold alongside the iPhone. The new cap will be 3GB for customers on HSPA+ plans and 5GB for those on LTE, up from roughly 2GB regardless of network type. Once the cap is hit, throttling will kick in until the end of the billing cycle, the same policy as before.
The carrier has taken a significant amount of heat in recent weeks for stepping up enforcement of the data throttling policy — many subscribers had been reporting text messages telling them they were in the top five percent o...

AT&T service in the works to let app developers pay for users' data use

Posted on Feb 28, 2012 by MG1

AT&T has been making news all over MWC in the past couple of days. The most recent report from The Wall Street Journal says that Ma Bell is planning a service that will enable app devs and other content providers to pay the carrier for subscriber's data usage. AT&T's head of network and technology said today that "A feature that we're hoping to have out sometime next year is the equivalent of 800 numbers that would say, if you take this app, this app will come without any network usage." Donovan goes on to say that interest is swirling from companies that offer services like streaming music and video that feed on a steady diet of data and that the carrier's rollout of LTE would make the new ...

AT&T launches pilot program for expanded push-to-talk services

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

Let's face it, walkie-talkies are far from glamorous, but for large and small enterprises that rely on real-time communication, the WWII artifact remains an integral part of the workday. Now, AT&T has set forth on a journey to give its push-to-talk services a modern makeover, and it's recruiting a few partners to join the quest. In addition to providing PTT-enabled smartphones, the carrier will be testing IP-based technologies that offer workflow automation for tasks such as fleet management and dispatch. Additionally, the system will also offer integration with traditional radio systems such as PMR and LMR, which means an organization won't need to transition its entire crew at once. You ca...

Subscribers in the Tampa-St. Petersberg, Florida area and in the vicinity of Duram, North Carolina now have access to AT&T’s LTE service, which was recently determined by Metrico Wireless to be even faster than similar services offered by Verizon Wireless. ”We’ve seen positive response from customers on our 4G LTE launch, and as today’s expansion shows, we’re continuing our rollout of fast LTE speeds to more areas in the Triangle,” said AT&T’s VP/GM of Mobility and Consumer Markets in the Carolinas, Laurent Therivel, in a statement.
