A few weeks ago, Intel updated their Atom platform with the launch of Cedar Trail, the successor to Pine Trail. While CPU performance isn’t likely to have changed much—we’re still looking at a dual-core plus Hyper-Threading in-order architecture—the GPU core received an upgrade to a PowerVR SGX 545 (from the precious GMA 3150). The new chips are also fabbed on Intel’s 32nm process, making for a very tiny and power efficient processor that should improve on Atom’s already impressive battery life. Naturally, a new Atom platform means new Atom netbooks from all the usual suspects, and first out the door (at least in terms of detailed announcements) is ASUS with their updated Eee PC lineup. ASUS just showed me their first 27-inch 2560 x 1440 IPS panel (pictured above). Pricing and availability are both unknowns although I am hearing 2H 2012 may be likely for the display. There are VGA, DL-DVI, DP and HDMI inputs of course. The panel can be rotated 90 degrees as well.

Performance zealots will remember the ASUS Z7S WS which went head on with then Intel 'Skulltrail' D5400XS Xeon luxury gaming platform (using dual unlocked QX9775 chips), but since then ASUS has done nothing of that sort, leaving EVGA with the iconic SR-2 to mop up things in the Xeon 55xx/56xx era, as vrzone reports today.

This is kind of a strange announcement. We have all been waiting on the announcement of the pricing for the Asus Eee Pad MeMO, which is a 7" Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. We got the specs and release window earlier, but never got the pricing. Then, during the NVIDIA press conference at about 4:45 PM PST, President and CEO of Asus Jen-Hsun Huang, announced the pricing of a 7" Asus tablet, but not the MeMO.

While hard drives for its computers have been affected by the floods in Thailand, Asus is still a powerhouse in the motherboard market. According to a Digitimes report, the company has just announced that its products make up 70 percent of the global market share for motherboards using the Intel X79 Express chipset. The X79 is a niche product, but the company's other motherboards made a strong showing as well, with Asus motherboards using the Intel Z68 and P67 chipsets apparently reaching 50 to 60 percent market share.

Asus says Windows 8 ARM tablet coming; still committed to Android

At a presentation in Taiwan, Asus confirmed that it will be producing a Windows 8 powered ARM tablet that it plans on launching before the end of this year, although there are already rumors surrounding a September release. But Asus is certainly not giving up on Android. Eee Systems chief Samson Hu said that only weeks after the release of the quad-core powered Asus Transformer Prime, the manufacturer wants to get out ahead of the Apple iPad 3 with a new Android tablet. Hu said this device would have a 10 inch screen with "a high screen resolution". It is unknown whether this will be a totally new model or an upgrade of the Transformer Prime. The latest speculation on the third-gen Apple tab...

Asus on Transformer Prime's Locked Bootloader, Battery & GPS Issues

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG3

After some availability issues faced by the Transformer Prime in North America, the tablet has now received a series of new complaints regarding battery life, GPS problems and the locked bootloader which were recently addressed in a statement made by Asus officials, softpedia reports:
The first complaints about battery life made their appearance a short while ago, when reviewers have found out that in some tests the Transformer Prime lags behind the original Transformer tablet in this regard.
Soon after this discovery was made, it was also uncovered that the built-in GPS had a series of difficulties when it came to finding and maintaining the connection with navigation satellites.

Asus Transformer Prime teardown reveals cause of GPS issue

Asus Transformer Prime teardown reveals cause of GPS issue

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG1

Asus's GPS troubles with the Transformer Prime don't seem to have been easily resolved by the recent firmware update, and Anandtech claims to have the answer. A teardown of the Prime didn't reveal much untoward, but does show that the spotty GPS reception is down to the tablet's fundamental hardware design. Unlike the original, plastic Transformer, the Prime has a fully aluminum body which doesn't play too nicely with wireless signals, and unlike the iPad there's no RF window or speaker grill to mitigate it (it's worth noting, though, that the Wi-Fi-only iPad with which the Prime directly competes doesn't have a GPS unit at all). For its part, Asus has admitted that the tablet's design does ...

Asus Transformer Prime's latest firmware already rooted

Asus Transformer Prime's latest firmware already rooted

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

The fun doesn't stop today for the Transformer Prime: we've seen Asus confirm the release date for Android 4.0, a new firmware update pushed out, and now the device has been rooted for the first time by xda-developers poster jcase and TeamAndIRC. There's video proof on YouTube showing the Transformer Prime running the latest firmware and accessing root-only apps like Superuser and Titanium Backup, but you'll have to be patient if you want to root your own tablet. The team behind this hack aren't planning on releasing it into the wild until after January 12th so that Asus can't block it when it pushes out Ice Cream Sandwich.

ASUS to Issue Bootloader Unlock Tool for Transformer Prime, ICS Update Due January 12

In response to criticism from the modding and open-source communities, ASUS announced today that it would be issuing a bootloader unlock tool for its new Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet (read parts one and two of our review) at an undetermined future date. Because of DRM concerns, unlocking the Transformer Prime's bootloader will render it unable use Google's video rental service, and it will also void the device's warranty.

Asus Transformer Prime bootloader is locked, say xda devs

Asus Transformer Prime bootloader is locked, say xda devs

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

As if Asus didn't have enough software headaches with the Transformer Prime already, it's now added one entirely of its own making: an angry homebrew community that has just discovered that the Prime's bootloader is encrypted. A 128-bit encryption key stands between eager Prime modders and the ability to load custom ROMs of their own, which has been greeted with an understandable mix of disgust and frustration.
HTC was the most recent other company to dabble with encryption-locked bootloaders, which incited enough of a customer backlash for CEO Peter Chou to personally reverse course and promise that bootloaders on all recent HTC phones would be set free. Inspired by that course of events, t...
