Samsung releases ICS update source code for Galaxy S II

Samsung releases ICS update source code for Galaxy S II

Posted on Mar 21, 2012 by MG1

Source code is for modders what chum is to sharks, and Samsung is stirring up the waters in the Samsung Galaxy S II community with the source code for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. The update has been working its way out to Europe and Asia, and now Samsung has released the source code for it.
It should be noted that this is obviously the code for the base version of the Galaxy S II (model GT-I9100), so there are no guarantees that the code will be able to be turned into custom ROMs for carrier variants of the device, like the AT&T Skyrocket, etc. Still, it could go a long way in helping modders create custom ROMs. It could definitely help out Team Douche in its work on Cyanogen...

After years of being parallel, but not one, Android code is now getting into the latest Linux 3.3 kernel finally bringing clarity about how the open-source Android project should be handled and giving developers an easier path to create cross-platform applications. The kernels of Android and Linux have always been similar, but with this programmers will be able to run apps on the stock Linux kernel.

CyanogenMod disables root access by default, now requires user configuration

CyanogenMod disables root access by default, now requires user configuration

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG1

Holy crap! CyanogenMod, the custom ROM of choice for many power users, will no longer offer root access upon first install. Now before you panic, let's make this part clear: everyone so inclined may still enable superuser access -- for ADB, apps or both -- from the Developer Options menu. The biggest change, in fact, is that CyanogenMod is making a significant departure from the majority of custom ROM developers, which offer root access to all users by default (and often without their knowledge). The move is an attempt by CyanogenMod leaders to make the platform more secure, and given the number of ROMs that are based on CyanogenMod (or glean its packages), we wouldn't be particularly surpri...

Netflix reveals Android app tests that keep it running on 'around 1000' devices daily

Posted on Mar 16, 2012 by MG3

In a quick peek behind the curtain at what life can be like as an Android developer, Netflix's Tech Blog has posted details of the testing process for each iteration of its app. According to Netflix's own stats, after being initially released for just a handful of phones nearly a year ago it now streams to "almost around 1,000" different devices daily. The situation of building one app for different hardware, software (including CM7 and CM9), screen sizes and and other variations like hardware or software decoding presents many challenges, but the team has filtered down to 14 devices (10 phones, 4 tablets) that give maximum coverage for their daily tests. Add in an HTML5 frontend for the nat...

Chromium OS shown working with desktop manager

Chromium OS shown working with desktop manager

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

Since its inception, the Google Chrome operating system for Chromebook computers has been unique in its ability to work completely independently of the desktop environment. Very recently the open-source version of Chrome OS, Chromium, has been seen to be amped up by developers in a setup called Aura Shell to have not only a desktop which interacts directly with the offline storage space of the hardware its running on, but applications other than the Chrome browser being launched directly from the desktop as well. While some might say that this defeats the purpose of Chrome OS entirely, the developers working on this project insist that because this version of the OS still has a very cloud-ba...
