Fans of creative nickel-and-dime schemes will love this: Buy an Intel i3-2312M, i3-2102 or Pentium G622 and it just isn't powerful enough, you can grab a $50 upgrade card. Enter the card's code online and hidden capacity in your chip will suddenly become available for use. Those with longer memories will find this offer familiar, because Intel did the same thing last year with the Pentium G6951. You may be peeved at the idea of buying the same thing twice, but remember that the company is only targeting the limited service at low-end consumers who want a little bit extra from their budget desktop. If you're interested in how much performance can be wrung from these chips, check out the sourc...

With the speed of a limping slug, Intel is slowing coming 'round to accepting that fact the future of end-user computing lies in lightweight mobility -- and hey, it might be a good idea to come up with a low-power, high-performance chip that can compete with the incredibly successful ARM processors.

Sandy Bridge-E to ship without CPU cooler

Sandy Bridge-E to ship without CPU cooler

Posted on Aug 15, 2011 by MG3

Intel has decided to ship its Sandy Bridge-E processors without a bundled CPU cooler, as vrzone reported:
How many of you rely on aftermarket coolers for your CPU? We don't know anyone that thinks Intel's stock coolers are great and when details reached us of Intel not shipping coolers with its upcoming Sandy Bridge-E processors we were at first surprised, but considering the target market it makes a lot of sense.

Trial production of Apple’s next-generation A6 mobile processor has begun, Taiwan Economic News reports. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has kicked off a test run of A6 chipsets — which could be 28-nanometer SoCs that feature dual or quad-cores and ARM-based architecture according to earlier reports — and Apple devices carrying the new chips are expected to be released in the second quarter next year at the earliest, according to multiple anonymous industry sources. Reports dating back to June suggested that Apple dumped Samsung following multiple patent disputes, and the company would instead utilize TSMC for production of its next-generation A6 processor.

Intel to Offer CPU Upgrades via Software for Selected Models

Intel to Offer CPU Upgrades via Software for Selected Models

Intel has posted an upgrade service page on their website which indicates that Intel will again be offering upgradeable CPUs. This is not totally unheard of since Intel offered a similar service for Pentium G6951 a year ago. Back then, $50 bought you Hyper-Threading and 1MB more L3 cache, and the SKU of the CPU changed to G6952. This time Intel has expanded the lineup and the upgrade service is available for three CPUs: i3-2312M, i3-2102 and Pentium G622. Unfortunately we don't know the price yet but we do know that the upgrade offers higher frequency and possibly increased amount of cache.

It looks like that AMD might bundle liquid cooling with special editions of the upcoming FX processors.
A recent report indicated that AMD has been considered when it began considering the option of equipping boxed versions of its FX CPUs with liquid coolers. The Antec Kuhler H2O 620 is given as a possible example of what AMD's customers may encounter in the future alongside enthusiast processors, though neither of the two companies commented on the issue.

2013 OMAP processors will allow for all-day battery life says TI

2013 OMAP processors will allow for all-day battery life says TI

Posted on Aug 05, 2011 by MG1

Texas Instrument's Brian Carlson says that by 2013, it will be producing OMAP chips using a 20nm process. And this line of chips will allow for "true all-day computing" according to Carlson. With low battery life currently a major issue for Android phones, a processor that allows a phone to be used all-day without a recharge is sure to find a place under the hood of some high-end smartphones using the Google open source OS.
Discussing a 2013 OMAP release would seem to put the kibosh on rumors that TI would be selling the line after the launch of OMAP5 in 2012. Speculation was centered on a bidding war between Intel and NVIDIA that would have brought some big megabucks to the Dallas based sem...

Cambridge chip designer ARM Holdings posted results for its second quarter and half year ended June 30, 2011. Revenue for the quarter jumped 27 percent to $190.2 million, up from $150.3 million one year prior. Total revenue for the year did slightly better, jumping 28 percent from $293.6 million one year ago to $375.7 million in the first half of 2011. Those numbers are somewhat modest by chip giant standards, but it's worth noting ARM added 29 processor licenses in the second quarter alone.
"In the first half of 2011, we have seen strong license revenues driven by an increase in design activity around ARM technology across a broad range of end applications," ARM CEO Warren East said in a st...

Sandy Bridge E Core i7-3960X performance revealed early

Sandy Bridge E Core i7-3960X performance revealed early

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Although an exact release date for Intel's upcoming X79 chipset and Sandy Bridge E processors remains uncertain, DonanimHaber has revealed some new details about one of the parts. The Turkish site has published some internal slides that compare Intel's existing hexa-core Core i7-990X Extreme Edition processor to the new flagship i7-3960X. Unsurprisingly, the new part is claimed to offer a dramatic speed boost.
Despite winding the core clock frequency down from 3.46GHz to 3.30GHz, the i7-3960X actually has a higher peak Turbo Boost speed, revving up to 3.9GHz versus 3.73GHz. The slides also indicate that the new 32nm six-core (12 threads) processor will come with an extra 3MB of cache (15MB v...

During a third quarter earnings call, Qualcomm Executive VP Steven Mollenkopf revealed the company's first 28-nanometer device will go commercial at the end of the year, AndroidAndMe reported. The chip architecture, codenamed Krait, is most likely to show up in HTC hardware. More than one source told AndroidAndMe that prototype devices with Krait have been provided to Google.
The chip will also have 65 percent lower power consumption that current ARM-based CPU cores, Qualcomm claims, though which ARM chips it's exactly comparing them to isn't known.
Qualcomm's statement of having the chips ready by the end of the year doesn't necessarily mean devices will be ready for purchase on store shelv...

ARM to Challenge Intel's Dominance in Notebooks

By 2015, ARM will have captured a notebook share of 23%, IHS predicts.
“Starting in 1981, when IBM first created its original PC based on Intel’s 8088 microprocessor, the X86 architecture has dominated the PC market,” said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst of compute platforms for IHS. “Over the next generation, billions of PCs were shipped based on X86 microprocessors supplied by Intel and assorted rivals - mainly AMD. However, the days of X86’s unchallenged domination are coming to an end as Windows 8 opens the door for the use of the ARM processor, which already has achieved enormous popularity in the mobile phone and tablet worlds.”
By 2015, ARM notebook shipments will hit 74 million un...

ARM looks to provide Mali mobile GPU with PS3 and Xbox 360 power in next 18 months

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

ARM is the dominant player in the mobile realm for processor and graphics processors that are able to provide the performance that consumers want in small handheld devices and still squeeze all the runtime possible out of the battery onboard. ARM is working on new designs for future products and is teasing with the power it has in store for its future hardware. ARM claims that within 18 months its Mali GPU will allow a mobile phone to be as powerful as the PS3 or Xbox 360.
ARM has noted that in order to allow for the next generation of gaming and user interfaces on mobile devices that it needs more than just a GPU and must take advantage of the CPU and GPU for the power needed. ARM also note...
