Microsoft flatly denies any interest in building Windows Phone devices

Microsoft flatly denies any interest in building Windows Phone devices

Posted on Jun 26, 2012 by MG1

Last week we reported on a rumor from industry OEMs that Microsoft was sourcing someone to build a Windows Phone. It wasn’t know whether that would be for some sort of development platform, or a retail product, but some industry analysts thought it was more likely that Microsoft would bring a phone to market (and based on your comments, more than one of you were hoping it would pan out as well).
Microsoft flatly denied today that they have any interest in doing so, telling InformationWeek that they have no plans to manufacture their own phone. This is of some note, as Microsoft usually denies all rumors as a matter of policy. We’d guess that they don’t want to rile their Windows OEMs with si...

Microsoft Releases Intune 3.0 With Windows Phone Support

Microsoft Releases Intune 3.0 With Windows Phone Support

Posted on Jun 12, 2012 by MG1

Microsoft today announced the third version of Windows Intune, its cloud-based solution for PC and mobile device management and security. Along with the new people centric capabilities and upgrade rights to the latest version of Windows, the latest version now includes the ability to download “licensed available line-of-business software applications” on Windows Phone 7.0 & above, iOS and Android devices. I think enterprise support is much needed for Windows Phone devices and as Microsoft’s own division such as Server & Tools adding support for it is a good thing. We may see wide adoption among companies across the world as Windows Phone 8 gets released with much more enterprise support.

Wolfram Alpha+ just made its debut in the Windows Phone Marketplace. The 3rd party app enables users to enter queries and perform calculations.
The Wolfram Alpha+ app extends the native Windows Phone keyboard and adds an extra 18 specialized keys to make typing in formulas a snap. 2 of those keys can even be customized so you can tailor the keyboard to your personal needs.
The built-in calculator enables computations to be performed offline. It can simplify expressions entered into the search bar independent of an Internet connection.
Wolfram Alpha+ is available for free in the Windows Phone Marketplace right now.

Microsoft’s popular Photosynth panorama stitching tech has finally reached the company’s own Windows Phone platform. The photo app was released over a year ago on iOS but was oddly missing from WP7. Microsoft admitted that the app required some deeper access to the phones hardware, which was not available at the time.

Analyst suggest Facebook buy Nokia, make a Windows Phone

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

We have heard that Facebook has a new impetus to develop a mobile platform of its own. Now Paris-based Paul Amsellem, managing director of Mobile Network Group, a mobile marketing company, suggests the company could get into the game most easily by buying Nokia and releasing a Windows Phone.
"Facebook needs somebody with an understanding of networking, technology, carrier relationships and logistics," he said. "They can acquire one of these two players for not a lot of money."

Facebook for Windows Phone rolls in threaded messaging, tagging, kitchen sink

Facebook for Windows Phone rolls in threaded messaging, tagging, kitchen sink

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Some have called Microsoft's Facebook app for Windows Phone a red-headed stepchild to the Android and iOS darlings, but it's making up for lost time in good fashion with a 2.5 update. Those who live a Metro life now get full Facebook conversation threads with group support, so they're not left out of the loop when a friend mentions the pub he wanted to visit two days ago. Along with this more conversational addition, it's now possible to tag a friend or a place in a post using plain "with" and "at" statements, and the seemingly inescapable Like button has reached comments for Windows Phone owners. There's more control over posts and active post links in the mix as well, so you'll find a surf...

ZTE Windows Phones coming to the U.S. by year's end

ZTE Windows Phones coming to the U.S. by year's end

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

ZTE wants to grow its Windows Phone business beyond Europe and Asia, and eventually bring its smartphones to the U.S. We guess they’re talking about the Tania handset, though as far as we know they may have some other products in the pipeline, as well.
At the moment, the Chinese company has a number of low-to-mid range devices on sale across U.S. carriers (some of which are Android-based) and offering a Windows Phone device could prove beneficial for their bottom line. Moreover, with ZTE entering the picture, customers get another option, the one that doesn’t necessarily pulls them into expensive monthly contracts.

Nokia not worried about LG’s Windows Phone departure

Posted on May 10, 2012 by MG1

Speaking to FierceWireless here, Chris Weber, Nokia’s president for the Americas, said he was not concerned with LG dropping out of the Windows Phone game to focus on Android, saying they were not a major player, and their exit will not have a significant impact.
"I see significant commitment from HTC, Samsung," Weber said. "I actually see increased momentum and commitment form a various set of OEMs on the platform."
He cited the recent announcement of the Samsung Focus 2 as an example of such commitment, saying the $50 handset would benefit the whole ecosystem.

Windows Phone Developer Summit kicks off June 20th

Windows Phone Developer Summit kicks off June 20th

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

Next month is going be brutal for technology reporters. Apple is holding their annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 11th, Google is holding their annual I/O event on June 27th, and now Microsoft has just announced the Windows Phone Developer Summit, due to kick off on June 20th. It’ll take place in San Francisco, and seeing as how no agenda was provided, we have absolutely no clue what will be talked about. They’ll be developer oriented workshops, that’s a given, but will we be heaing about Windows Phone 8? Codenamed Apollo, the next version of Windows Phone is expected to take things to the next level. Rumor has it that it’s built on the same kernel that Windows 8 uses, so develop...

Developer earns over $1,000 per day with a Windows Phone game

Posted on Apr 20, 2012 by MG1

While Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform may not be as big as Apple and Google’s offerings, it is still possible for app developers to find success on the emerging operating system. A year ago, FourBros Studio launched a free game called Taptitude on the Windows Phone Marketplace. The game, as of today, has earned the company over $100,000 in revenue and boasts more than 300,000 users, Business Insider reported on Thursday. Interestingly enough, the company’s revenue has spiked since the launch of Nokia’s Windows Phones. FourBros Studio uses Microsoft’s pubCenter, along with a service called AdDuplex, to sell advertisements on Taptitude, which is now making roughly $1,000 a day and averaging...

Microsoft Windows Phone Marketing Manager leaves after 5 months in the job

Posted on Apr 18, 2012 by MG1

I guess selling Windows Phone 7 is not the easiest job in the world.
Less than 5 months after joining Microsoft from Samsung, Gavin Kim has left the company.
"We can confirm that Gavin Kim has made a personal decision to leave Microsoft," a Microsoft spokesperson said in an e-mail. "We feel very good about the work he has done to set the team, and its new lead Eugene Ho, up for success. We wish him all the best."
We covered his arrival in November last year, when he said “I will be responsible to help set the future direction for the Windows Phone platform and to accelerate Microsoft’s trajectory to win the hearts and minds of consumers, carriers, device manufacturers, developers and partne...
