Sony NEX-5N triggers clicking sounds during video
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasSonyAlpha NEX-5N
Last month, Sony introduced the NEX-5N, an update to its 16-megapixel NEX-5 digital camera with interchangeable lenses. One of its benchmark features was its 1080p60 recording capabilities. Unfortunately, there is evidently a problem with Sony's implementation, and the camera makes a clicking noise that disturbs the audio while recording videos.
The sound is apparently emanating from the body of the camera itself. Sony has acknowledged the problem, but has no comment on when a fix might be available. An external microphone can mitigate or eliminate the problem entirely but can still pick up the sound depending on how close the microphone is to the camera body.
The NEX-5N's bug is unusual giv...

Sony PlayStation Vita at the Tokyo Game Show 2011
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Here in the SCE booth at Tokyo Game Show 2011, we’re offering experiences for even more users. Firstly, there are our three platforms, the PS3, PSP, and now, the PS Vita. We can provide a variety of experiences for people who play each platform. So we’ve set up a space where more people can try more titles.
The main attraction here is PS Vita. There are over 30 titles available on about 80 consoles. We think this is a very strong lineup of titles.
The main feature of PS Vita, which you’ll see as soon as you pick it up, is the 5-inch OLED display. Not only is the screen big, it’s also very clear, thanks to the OLED technology. Another feature is the variety of interfaces. For example, PS Vita...

PS Vita to get five hours max battery, expensive memory card
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Sony, which recently disclosed that it will miss the holiday selling season in the US for its new PlayStation Vita, has also released some new product information that some of its potential users might find a disappointment. Sony has revealed that those gaming on the Vita may only be able to play for up to five hours before the battery runs down. The company also disclosed that the handheld console's proprietary memory card will sell for a substantial premium over conventional memory such as a generic SDHC card or a Memory Stick.
Battery life will depend on how the Vita is being used. Gaming will use up a charge in three to five hours. Video will play for five hours. The Vita will sustain up...

Sony's Dash gets a new lease on life, we stop to wonder why
Like UnlikeFiled in: Photo FramesSonyHID-B7HID-B70
Remember Sony's Dash? That little pseudo tablet powered by Chumby OS that started making the rounds at last year's CES? No, well we almost forgot about it too. But, just as it was finally fading from memory, Sony hit us with an update to the Internet Viewer. Not much has changed, save a rearrangement of the ports and buttons. It's still got the same pile of widgets and channels, but now sports a (very) basic web browser for those with a bit of a masochistic streak. The ability to register your Dash without having to first hook up to a PC is also a welcome addition. The black-only HID-B7 will ship for $130, while the HID-B70 comes in brown, blue and orange while adding a battery to the mix fo...

White PS3 coming to Europe and Australia in November

There's nothing a like an (almost) fresh and exciting color variant to make us totally forget about the PS4. Besides, this little dazzler will come with a 320GB HDD and two equally white Dualshock controllers, which means you'll only have to spray-paint your PS3 Move, headset, external drive, wheel and eyebrows to match. Look out for it at GameStop in the UK, Germany and possibly other Euro nations too, as well as at Electronic Boutique in Australia from November 1st -- or just pre-order via the source links below.

Best Buy puts the Sony Tablet S on display for pre-order
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSonyTablet S
The story of what is currently going on with the Sony Tablet S is a bit muddled. As we reported, Home Shopping Network is offering the 16GB version of the Android tablet for $599.95. Now keep in mind that the typical HSN viewer might not be someone who is well versed in technology and wouldn't know the difference between a device with 16GB of storage, or one with 32GB of storage. HSN says that the tablets are ready to ship.
On the other hand, Sony is taking pre-orders for the same 16GB version of the tablet for $499.99. The tablet is expected to ship on the 16th of this month which means if you can wait until Friday, you can save a C-note. Otherwise, if you buy the device from HSN you will ...

Sony Displays VPL-VW1000ES Projector at CEDIA
Like UnlikeFiled in: ProjectorsSonyVPL-VW1000ES
Today at CEDIA, Sony unveiled their newest home theater projector that will rival even the professional theater projectors. The VPL-VW1000ES is the first home theater projector to include a native 4K HD (4096 x 2160) resolution. The device will also feature 2000 ANSI lumens, 3D capabilities, and a 1000000:1 contrast ratio. Unfortunately additional specifications are not available at this time, “Sony continues to push the boundaries of high resolution video from the lens to the living room,” said Mike Abary, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ Home Division. “In similar fashion to our industry leading 4K Digital Cinema projectors, our new VPL-VW1000ES 4K home theater projector has been...

Sony gives more detail of its OLED viewfinder
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasSony
Sony Japan has published more detail about the OLED viewfinder used in the NEX-7, SLT-A77, SLT-A65 and the optional EVF for the NEX-5N. The display is manufactured by Sony and is based on white OLEDs that sit behind colored filters, rather than the red, green and blue colored OLEDs used in many other displays. This could explain the apparent higher color accuracy of the Sony display (since it's easier to adjust the behavior of a color filter than change the emission color of an OLED).

JVC shows off projectors with 4K precision, but not quite 4K pixels
Like UnlikeFiled in: ProjectorsSonyJVCDLA-RS4000VPL-VW1000ES
JVC first brought 4K home with its $175k DLA-RS4000 and now it's back with four new models with greater than HD resolution at much easier to swallow prices. You'll note the term used is "with 4K precision", because strictly speaking these don't project over 4,000 pixels of horizontal resolution, coming in at a still impressive 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. While this is still about four times the number of a standard HD image, it's less than say, Sony's VPL-VW1000ES. Filling in the difference is JVC's e-Shift technology, which was originally developed for its 8K projector. It works by creating two 1080p frames, with one shifted down diagonally and alternated at 120Hz to create the effect.

Sony PS Vita up for pre-order with Dec 31 release
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
The Sony PS Vita – the company’s replacement to the PSP – has gone up for pre-order at Amazon, with the retailer suggesting a December 31 2011 ship date in the US. Both Amazon’s US and UK sites are offering the Vita, each having the WiFi-only and WiFi + 3G versions up for grabs. Pricing starts at $249.99 in the US and £229.99 in the UK.
That gets you the WiFi-only models; if you want integrated 3G, you’re looking at $299.99 in the US or £279.99 in the UK. In the US you’ll need to sign up to an AT&T data agreement in order to actually use that 3G connectivity, and Sony – or Amazon – is yet to confirm which carrier(s) the UK version of the handheld will be offered with.

Our network of eagle-eyed tipsters have given us the heads-up that Sony's $700 NEX-5N is ready to buy online, and curious camera fans can check out last month's hands-on before deciding to part ways with that much cheddar. The company is also taking pre-orders for the monstrous NEX-7, which costs $1,350 -- slightly more than we'd expected. This camera has a 24.3-megapixel sensor, can shoot AVCHD video and stills up to 10 fps and can probably see the turn of the universe, or something. This one will make its way to homesteads in November, giving you just enough time to learn how to record everyone's disappointed faces -- come Christmas morning -- in eye watering detail.
