Sony released a major update today for its Music Unlimted service that streams music to PlayStation 3 consoles. The update brings an interface overhaul for the service on PS3, but more importantly, adds new music discovery capabilities as well as a “My Channels” feature that lets you customize your music listening experience.
The My Channels feature seems to take a page from Pandora, letting you create your own radio stations with songs selected based around your favorite artists. You type in the artist name and the station will automatically be populated with songs from that artist as well as similar songs from other artists. Sony posts $350 million loss in Q2 earnings report, forecasts full-year loss

Sony's Q2 earnings have just come in and, as you might guess, they're not particularly glowing. A few days after announcing plans to buy out Ericsson's stake in Sony Ericsson, the manufacturer posted a quarterly loss of ¥27 billion ($346 million) today, compared with a net income of ¥31.1 billion during the same quarter last year. Last quarter, the firm posted a net loss of ¥15.5 billion, or about $200 million. Sony attributed much of this decline to a stronger yen, lower TV sales and recent flooding in Thailand, which has disrupted its supply chain. On this basis, the company lowered its full year forecast, predicting a net loss of ¥90 billion ($1.2 billion), compared with a net profit of ¥...

Ericsson on Thursday announced that it has agreed to sell its stake in Sony Ericsson to Sony Corporation for €1.05 billion in cash. The deal is in line with earlier reports. Ericsson has announced that it's selling its part of the joint Swedish-Japanese venture Sony Ericsson for $1.47 billion (1.05 billion euros). The Japanese Sony Corporation will become the sole owner of the phone maker in an attempt to boost its mobile portfolio.
"Sony will acquire Ericsson's 50 per cent stake in Sony Ericsson... making the mobile handset business a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony," Ericsson said. The decision has already passed approval of both companies' boards, but it's, of course, yet to pass regulatory approval by January 2012. The deal evaluates the whole of Sony Ericsson at around $3.0 billion, almost four times less than what Google paid to acquire Motorola Mobility.

Just a few weeks ago Sony reportedly declined to offer a reason why it didn't want to jump on the ultrabook bandwagon. But speculation pointed to a company concerned over the high cost and low profit margins associated with Intel's new form factor. It's been a week of upgrades for Sony Tablet S owners. First came news of the PlayStation Store's arrival and now comes confirmation that Sony's Music Unlimited service is available, as well. Sony USA says it is too soon to know what effect the floods in Thailand will have on A65 and NEX-7 shipments. In response to reports from Japan that the launches will be delayed, a spokesman said: 'In Japan, a press announcement was made on October 20th regarding launch delays to the Japanese market. This does not apply to the US market, as the impact of the flood on US product shipping is still under investigation.' Sony Dual Screen Display Coming November 13th

One of the more talked about 3DTVs is the new Sony dual screen display. This 24 inch screen was specifically designed to work with their Playstation 3 game console. The main feature is the ability to display two full screen views simultaneously. This prevents the players from having to look at a small split screen, which typically hinders the player’s view. Sony will sell the PS Vita in the UK, Europe, USA, New Zealand, Canada, Africa, and Australia on the 22 February the company has confirmed at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.

Alleged LulzSec hacker pleads not guilty in Sony case

An alleged LulzSec hacker has pleaded not guilty to charges that he took part in a Sony network intrusion. Reuters reports that Cody Kretsinger, 23, has entered not guilty pleas to one count each of conspiracy and unauthorized impairment of a protected computer at a hearing in the US District Court in Los Angeles. Judge Victor Kenton set a December 13 trial date for Kretsinger, who also ordered that Kretsinger be defended by a court-appointed public defender.

Sony Reader PRS-T1 hacked to run Android

The Sony Reader PRS-T1 has been rooted. While it has been known that the e-reader runs a version of Android, it was thought that it could not be hacked as the Android install was not a full version. As the video below demonstrates, a AWD.Launcher has been hacked to run on the device, although not all apps work.
The PRS-T1 is now capable of running third-party e-reader apps including CoolReader and FBReader. Access has also been made available to Terminal. The, hack, which is still a work in progress has not yet been publicly posted. Apps such as Angry Birds, for example, don’t yet work.

Sony has released firmware v1.03 for its SLT-A77 and A65 cameras. Currently only available via the company's Asia site (the first region in which the cameras are widely available), the upgrade promises to improve the responsiveness of the control dials and function buttons, along with the speed of switching between EVF and LCD modes. It also adds support for the HVL-MT24AM macro flash accessory.

3G Sony Tablet S and Tablet P tipped for October 28 in Japan

If you liked the Sony Tablet S and Tablet P but thought you would just hold off until the 3G version hit they are coming, at least in Japan. NTT DoCoMo has announced that on October 28 3G versions of both tablets will hit Japan. The tablets hit the Japanese market on September 17 in WiFi only versions. Other than the addition of 3G, the machines will be the same it seems.

Sony issues recall on 1.6 million LCD TVs

Sony Corp. on Wednesday confirmed that it is recalling approximately 1.6 million Bravia-branded LCD televisions. Sony said it has received 11 reports to date, all from within Japan, from customers complaining that their TVs have overheated or begun to smoke. The problems are caused by a defective inverter transformer used with the LCD backlighting assemblies in the Bravia TVs, and the part is found in televisions sold both locally in Japan and overseas. Sony told the Associated Press it will issue local recall information in each market that sells the affected television models, which include the Bravia KDL-40X5000, KDL-40X5050, KDL-40W5000, KDL-40V5000 and KDL-40V3000.
