Sony 'sorry' for PS Vita bugs

Sony has apologised to early PlayStation Vita adopters after this weekend's Japanese launch was blighted by a host of software bugs.
The company enjoyed a strong opening weekend of sales, but users have complained of a host of flaws, causing Sony to issue an immediate software fix.
Among the faults, shown off in videos users have uploaded to YouTube (see below), are complaints of unresponsive touchscreens and complete system freezes.
Other users have reported that the device cannot be shut down during online play and will not power up after it has been charging.

Sony sells out of PS Vita pre-orders in Japan in comeback

Sony on Thursday said that it had sold out of the PlayStation Vita in Japanese pre-orders. Not due to go on sale until Saturday, the handheld game system triggered lines that saw its initial batch spoken for. It did have a significant amount of time to sell stock, having started pre-orders on October 15.
The run may be a sign of a return to health for Sony's mobile gaming prospects, both once the Vita launches fully in Japan and once it arrives in the US in mid-February. 'Other OS' class action lawsuit against Sony dismissed

When Sony removed the "Other OS" ability from the PlayStation 3 in March last year, some users put together a class action lawsuit based on their right to keep the features the console had when they bought it. That lawsuit has now been dismissed because the judge was not convinced that the angry gamers had a case. Although users were forced to choose between Other OS and the latest updates that allowed continued PlayStation Network access, Judge Seeborg said they never had a legal right to ongoing PSN service in the first place — giving up Other OS in order to keep PSN was a choice individual users made, not Sony. Sony Tablet S goes 3G, the company ships a version with a SIM card slot

The 3G version of the Sony Tablet S Android fondleslab is now shipping, and it is priced a hundred pounds sterling more than the Wi-Fi variant, likely to translate to $100 more in the US, if history of selling mobile gadgets across the Atlantic is any indication.
The tablet has a 9.4" display, and is powered by a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, with 5MP rear and a front-facing camera both present. It also has the often overlooked infrared sensor, which is placed there to allow using the slate for a remote of Sony's TVs and Blu-ray players.

Love 'em or hate 'em, one thing's for sure -- e-readers just keep getting cheaper. The latest to see a dip in price is the Sony Reader WiFi, which debuted at $149.99 just a couple of months back, but has now received a permanent drop to $129.99. What's more, Sony is also running a trade-in program through the end of December that will give you an additional $50 off if you turn in any old e-reader. Not quite the instant discount that an ad-supported Kindle gives you, but certainly not a bad deal if you're looking to upgrade from an older model.

Sony BRAVIA smart TV adds YouTube HD, Facebook, Twitter

Sony has updated its smart TV range with new social networking integration, high-definition YouTube video support and remote control from VAIO or other computers. The new firmware for the 2011 BRAVIA line-up brings Facebook galleries, messages, status updates and links to the internet-connected HDTVs, while a new Twitter ticker scrolls updates across the bottom of the screen. Meanwhile, it’s possible to share Track ID results – Sony’s song identifying technology – on Twitter too.

PS3 system software update version 4.00 is live

In preparation for Japan’s December 17th launch of the PlayStation Vita, Sony has issued the most recent in a long list of updates to its Playstation 3 platform. Version 4.00 will allow the PS3 to share music, video, and image files with the Vita, store Vita game save and other data, and update the Vita’s system software using the PS3’s network features.
The update also adds some standalone PS3 goodies, such as Blu-ray video upscaling and new privacy controls for PSN, allowing you to refuse messages and friend requests across the board or limit them to friends of friends. The system software update is available for download now.

Sony has released the long-rumored firmware v1.04 update for its A77 and A65 SLT models. The updates add two more lenses to the list that the cameras can correct for and also promise to improve image quality, response time and 'usability.' The updates are currently available in Asia and Europe but haven't been formally announced in the US. While Sony confirmed that the PS Vita will be able to dive into the PSP's back-catalog from launch, it looks like it'll miss out on anything pre-millennium. An updated page from the PS Vita's Japanese site has backed up rumors that PSOne Classics and other "archive games" won't be available when the quad-core console arrives in Asian stores next month. However, it's not all bad news for anyone hoping to relive those jaggy-edged gaming triumphs of the late 90's -- the official response adds that plans for older titles will be announced in due course.

It's the first one out in the Twitterverse, as far as they're aware, though its content isn't the most exciting in the world. Sony Ericsson Vscreens shares media to any device's browser

Sony Ericsson on Friday brought out a beta app that lets an Android device share its media on most bigger screens. Vscreens requires an Android app (Market) but can form a bond to share media with any device on the local Wi-Fi network by scanning a QR code on the screen. The link works on any modern browser and will show photos and videos on the target browser, even on iOS devices or the PS3.
The approach is a way to skip the trouble of requiring both devices on a universal sharing protocol, like DLNA, or else making a physical connection.
Running the app demands at least Android 2.1, but it isn't locked to Sony Ericsson phones.

PlayStation Network to be offline for a full day of maintenance tomorrow

Sony has just announced via its PlayStation Network blog that the online gaming platform will be undergoing a routine scheduled maintenance tomorrow, November 17. However, this one isn’t quite as routine as the system will be offline for almost a full day starting from 8am to 10pm PST. Sony did not detail reasons for the long maintenance period nor what improvements to the platform, if any, can be expected afterwards.

Sony CEO: We're building 'a different kind of TV set,' just like Apple

All eyes have been on Apple to reinvent the television set, but Sony CEO Howard Stringer recently confirmed that Sony, too, is working on re-imagining the TV. “There’s a tremendous amount of R&D going into a different kind of TV set,” Stringer said during a breakfast hosted recently by The Wall Street Journal. “We can’t continue selling TV sets [as we currently do].
