In addition to outlining its plans in Dutch on Facebook, Sony Ericsson has clarified its stance on bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to the Xperia-toting masses on its blog today. As if you haven’t been obsessively reading up on the update already, I’ll go ahead and mention a few new features including flexible widgets, Roboto font, the ability to take screen shots, revamped notifications and facial unlock. Luckily, if your phone came out in 2011 and it has “Xperia” in the name, Ice Cream Sandwich is headed your way.

Third-party phone retailer Phones4U has a great deal for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, offering the sexy smartphone for free with Orange’s 20.50 GBP per month plan. That money won’t get you too far though, but for some folks it could be a good enough solution – you get 200 voice minutes, 3,000 texts and 100MB of mobile data per month. Presuming you’re not calling a lot and rely mostly on Wi-Fi hotspots for mobile Internet, this plan could be just what you need. Otherwise — if you still want the Xperia arc S — you’ll have to pick some other plan with the phone.

Ericsson on Thursday announced that it has agreed to sell its stake in Sony Ericsson to Sony Corporation for €1.05 billion in cash. The deal is in line with earlier reports. Ericsson has announced that it's selling its part of the joint Swedish-Japanese venture Sony Ericsson for $1.47 billion (1.05 billion euros). The Japanese Sony Corporation will become the sole owner of the phone maker in an attempt to boost its mobile portfolio.
"Sony will acquire Ericsson's 50 per cent stake in Sony Ericsson... making the mobile handset business a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony," Ericsson said. The decision has already passed approval of both companies' boards, but it's, of course, yet to pass regulatory approval by January 2012. The deal evaluates the whole of Sony Ericsson at around $3.0 billion, almost four times less than what Google paid to acquire Motorola Mobility.

Seriously, Sony Ericsson, it’s a miracle you have any fan sites these days and you just want to shut them down? Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that you don’t make halfway decent phones – the Xperia Arc is OK, but how’s that stacking up against the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Nexus, DROID RAZR or the HTC Sensation series? Instead of shutting down fan communities like Xperiablog.net, and ultimately turning them into your enemies, you should embrace them. They’re the small handful of die-hard fans you have left, really.

Sony Ericsson confirmed that all of its 2011 smartphones will get Android 4.0. The Dutch arm of the Swedish-Japanese handset maker turned to Facebook to announce the news, which will affect a number of devices such as Xperia Play, neo, neo V, mini, mini pro, Ray, Pro, active, arc and arc S. In other words, the new Android Ice Cream Sandwich is optimized enough to be able to run on phones with a single-core 1GHz processor or at least Sony Ericsson thinks so. The company will first release Gingerbread 2.3.4 updates, though.

ony Ericsson posted its Q3 2011 financial results today, and while the numbers were better than those of the previous quarter, the company is still down from where it was last year. Sony Ericsson's CEO Bert Nordberg stated that the company's focus for 2012 will be entirely on smartphones, and that it will not longer offer feature phone models.
According to the figures, Sony Ericsson's Q3 sales were 33 percent higher than Q2 2011, with 9.5 million units shipped and 1.586 billion EUR (US$2.18 billion) in sales. Sony is reportedly ready to buy out Ericsson in the Sony Ericsson joint venture and will take a stronger role in controlling its mobile future, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Sony Ericsson was created in 2001 as a 50-50 joint venture between Sony and the infrastructure giant Ericsson and it has had some moderate success, particularly in the feature phone department with its cool Walkman series. The company has been very slow to adjust to the smartphone world though, as even its CEO has said it should have taken the iPhone more seriously.
