Sony Ericsson rolling out Xperia arc and Xperia neo Android 4.0 updates as we speak

Posted on Jun 01, 2012 by MG3

Just because it has no “Ericsson” in its name, that doesn’t mean Sony has forgot about its existing Sony Ericsson customers. Quite the contrary, the company is rolling out firmware updates for select devices wearing both names as we speak.
The select devices are Xperia arc and Xperia neo, which users have reportedly started receiving their servings of Ice Cream Sandwich. The phones will be updated to Android 4.0.4 and will remain on kernel 2.6.32.

Xperia Play Ice Cream Sandwich update canned?

Xperia Play Ice Cream Sandwich update canned?

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Blimey. After a concerted effort to right its wrongs has had us retracting our previously harsh words about Sony and its Android updates, things are all starting to unravel once again. A bagful of Sony Ericsson handsets are still destined for an Android 4.0 upgrade, but has the Xperia Play just fallen off the wagon?
The Sony Mobile website’s list of upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich updates is missing one key player. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play seems to have slipped off the list, which still includes the likes of the Xperia Pro, Xperia Arc and Xperia Ray.

Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaks for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY

Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaks for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

The official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY will not be out until later this spring, but if you are eager to have a taste of Google's latest and greatest, you can try out this early ICS ROM that just surfaced on the web, courtesy of the guys at XDA Developers. The ROM is based on Android 4.0.3 and retains most of the looks and feel of the stock Ice Cream Sandwich experience. Judging by what the folks are saying in the comments, albeit being an early build, the ROM is still stable enough to be taken for a quick spin. Of course, there are things that don't work yet, such as the smartphone's camera, the touchpads, and the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, bu....

Sony Ericsson crowd-sourcing ICS preview ROMs

Sony Ericsson crowd-sourcing ICS preview ROMs

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

This is one of the coolest stories we've come across in a while. Sony Ericsson is really taking the update to Android 4.0 seriously by releasing alpha builds for certain phones and even asking for community help in the process.
Sony Ericsson has released alpha builds of Android 4.0 for the Xperia Ray, Xperia Arc S, and Xperia Neo V handsets. This is well ahead of the scheduled release of the updates, but SE has a really cool plan here. While these ROMs are not intended for casual users or daily use, SE is pushing for users to use the xda forums to talk about the builds and help SE to build the ROMs better, and more quickly. This is a great gesture of openness that we're hoping catches on wit...

Sony Ericsson explains Ice Cream Sandwich update

Sony Ericsson explains Ice Cream Sandwich update

Posted on Dec 09, 2011 by MG1

Surprisingly close to when Motorola did it, Sony Ericsson laid out the process for updating its phones to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Basically, it’s going to take a while for Android 4.0 to land on Sony Ericsson’s phones but that doesn’t mean it isn’t working hard on it.
The company had previously said that 2011 Xperia devices like the Arc will definitely get the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. It is very transparent about the process of getting this software on its devices, as this involves taking the open source version, adapting it to their custom user interface, testing it internally, getting it approved by carriers around the world, testing some more and then sending it out. In particu...

In addition to outlining its plans in Dutch on Facebook, Sony Ericsson has clarified its stance on bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to the Xperia-toting masses on its blog today. As if you haven’t been obsessively reading up on the update already, I’ll go ahead and mention a few new features including flexible widgets, Roboto font, the ability to take screen shots, revamped notifications and facial unlock. Luckily, if your phone came out in 2011 and it has “Xperia” in the name, Ice Cream Sandwich is headed your way.
Here’s the official statement:
There have been a few questions here on the blog and in our support forums regarding our upgrade plans beyond Gingerbread. We can today confirm that we ...

All Sony Ericsson smartphones announced this year will get Android 4.0

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

Sony Ericsson confirmed that all of its 2011 smartphones will get Android 4.0. The Dutch arm of the Swedish-Japanese handset maker turned to Facebook to announce the news, which will affect a number of devices such as Xperia Play, neo, neo V, mini, mini pro, Ray, Pro, active, arc and arc S. In other words, the new Android Ice Cream Sandwich is optimized enough to be able to run on phones with a single-core 1GHz processor or at least Sony Ericsson thinks so. The company will first release Gingerbread 2.3.4 updates, though.

Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play, arc, neo and pro to get updated to Android 2.3.4 soon?

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Sony's quartet of high-end Android smartphones including the Xperia arc, play, neo and pro might just have gotten updated to Android 2.3.3, but the engineers over at SE are already testing and working on delivering the latest version of Android Gingerbread, 2.3.4, according to an unspecified source quoted by SE-centric Semcblog. The update will bring bug fixes, but it will also patch some security holes and add new functionalities like Sony's audio filtering xLOUD technology to the handsets. It's expected to roll out widely in October.
The latest Gingerbread is not coming to earlier models like the X10 mini, X10 mini pro or the X8, but we already know that an unspecified version of Gingerbre...

Those with generic trade models – i.e. sold unlocked and SIM-free – will get the update first (you can see Sony Ericsson’s demo of Gingerbread on the X10 after the cut), but only select operator-supplied X10 variants will get it after that.
