Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, not content with leaking possible Windows Phone 7/Windows 8 app compatibility also appears to be hinting at an expansion of Windows Phone 7 processor compatibility to Nvidia Tegra chipsets.
Speaking to investors yesterday, he mentioned the company expects to profit from Windows 8 tablets by creating Quad-Core Kal-El Plus chips optimised for Windows 8.
"The Windows 8, Windows on ARM, coming out toward the end of next year, or the year thereafter, is going to be a growth opportunity for us," Huang predicted.

Symbian getting Microsoft Apps in Q4, Office coming in 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIA
We have to admit it, Nokia did well in making us believe that Symbian is a burning platform. That’s why we can totally understand some people’s understanding that the phone maker will turn its back on Symbian as soon as the first Windows Phone devices hit the market. But it seems that those statements have fired back hard at Nokia and it’s going to great lengths trying to convince everyone that Symbian is cool again with major updates like Symbian Belle and new devices.

Microsoft adds Acer, ViewSonic to its patent licensees
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftAcerViewSonic
The list of Microsoft’s Android licensees has just grown by two - one of the largest PC makers, Acer, as well as ViewSonic will have to pay the Redmond-based company fees for every Android device they make. For Acer the deal includes both smartphones and tablets, while ViewSonic has agreed to paid for both its Android and Chrome OS-based phones and tablets. The latter hints that ViewSonic will indeed make tablets running on Chrome OS.

Super fast Windows 8 boot time demoed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft has revealed that Windows 8 will boot in just 8 short seconds and to prove it, the company has posted a video of the upcoming OS doing just that.
In a lengthy blog post explaining the whys and wherefores of how Microsoft teased the software into an 8 second boot-up, Gabe Aul explains that the new solution is "a fast start-up mode which is a hybrid of traditional cold boot and resuming from hibernate."
It's all down to hibernating the kernel session rather than closing it down completely and starting it back up again.

Microsoft continues to profit off Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleAndroid
While sales of Microsoft’s burgeoning Windows Phone platform lag, the company continues to find significant revenue streams elsewhere in the mobile industry. Specifically, Google’s Android partners have proven to be an invaluable asset for the Redmond-based tech giant. Microsoft’s revenue from royalties HTC is forced to pay on each Android phone it sells is estimated to be between three and five times the company’s Windows Phone revenue, which could help explain why Microsoft has been so quiet to date when it comes to marketing its new mobile OS. Now, Microsoft has announced new agreements with ViewSonic and Acer that will bring in cash from two more Android vendors. Read on for more.

Windows 8 client gets Hyper-V virtualization support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft has announced that one or more versions of Windows 8 client will ship with the company's Hyper-V virtualization software. Previously limited to Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2, Hyper-V allows users to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on the same computer, a functionality end users have been forced to seek in third party software such as VirtualBox and VMWare's products.
Hyper-V relies on Second Level Address Translation (SLAT), a feature present in AMD and Intel's latest 64-bit processors, and will take Windows 7's "XP Mode" to the next level by introducing virtualization support for all 32- and 64-bit operating systems -- not just Microsoft's decade-old platform.

Windows 8 Tablet from Samsung gets unveiled next Week
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsSamsungMicrosoftWindows 8
Several reports appeared today about the first Windows 8 Tablet. The Korean Economics Times reports that Samsung has partnered with Microsoft to make the first Windows 8 Tablet. The new Windows Tablet will be already unveiled at the Build developer conference next week (September 13-16). ThisIsMyNext reports that developers attending the conference might get one for free. This still does not confirm that Microsoft is actually ready to launch the Windows 8 Tablet this year. Windows 8 OS is supposed to launch late 2012. There have been rumors that Microsoft will release the tablet version earlier. It would be good for them, as they are really late in the game this time.
It is of course not the...

Microsoft Zune exec leaves for startup
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft’s Zune senior business development manager Dave McLauchlan recently said he is leaving the company to create his own startup. McLauchlan announced his resignation to the public on Twitter. “I have some news to share,” he tweeted. “Last week I offered my resignation to [Microsoft] and my last day is [Friday].” McLauchlan will work on a startup called “Buddy.” The website, located at http://Buddy.com, says the company will help developers “build mobile apps cheaper, faster and easier.” McLauchlan also tweeted that he will still be around in the mobile space. Microsoft killed its Zune mobile media player earlier this year, but Microsoft confirmed it will continue to offer music and vi...

Microsoft Defends Windows 8 Explorer 'Ribbon'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Windows division president Steven Sinofsky on Friday defended his team's decision to select the "ribbon" mechanism for Windows 8 Explorer, and basically told detractors to deal with it.
"We chose the ribbon mechanism, and to those that find that a flawed choice, there isn't much we can do other than disagree," Sinofsky wrote in a blog post. "While there are a lot of opinions, the one thing we know is that the satisfaction with our products that use the ribbon is much higher and the usage much broader and deeper."
Microsoft confirmed that Windows 8 Explorer would get the ribbon treatment in late August. That change will essentially add an Office-like "ribbon" toolbar to the Explorer tool for ...

Acer won’t move to ARM processors until Windows 8 lands according to source
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftAcerWindows 8
Acer was at IFA last weekend and one of the coolest products that the company showed off was the Ultrabook Aspire S3 that uses Intel’s new ultra mobile platform to combine portability with performance. There have been rumors swirling for a while that Acer would be offering machines using ARM processors as well to help it be able to produce cheaper notebooks. An ARM processor combined with a lower cost OS would make for an interesting computer indeed.
ARMdevices reports that a product strategy manager for Acer said at IFA that Acer would not be offering ARM processors inside notebooks in the short term. The unnamed source claims that ARM processors won’t show up inside Acer gear until Windows...

Google revamps YouTube for Windows Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleWindows Phone 7
Yesterday, the mobile version of the YouTube webpage mysteriously disappeared for Windows Phone users, but the confusion didn’t last long and Google is back, and it seems the daily absence has yielded only good results as when you access the webpage now it shows a refreshed and cleaner user interface. Why should you care for it? Well, the YouTube app in Windows Phone is nothing but a redirect to the mobile version of the website and when you tap on a video you are taken to the media player.
So now, you have virtually all the options of the desktop version of the website in a nice, touch-enabled redesign, so you can like, dislike, comment and find releated videos quickly. Nothing has changed ...

Will Windows Phone Apps Run On Windows 8?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7Windows 8
When you look at the combined 70 percent smartphone market share of Android and Apple in the U.S. compared to Microsoft’s measly and shrinking 6 percent, it seems like it’s game over before it really began for Windows Phone. Windows Phone is a decent mobile OS, even promising, but so far it has failed to capture the hearts and minds of developers or consumers. Can Microsoft do anything to change that and will it involve tying Windows Phone more tightly to its next desktop operating system, Windows 8?

Mango update coming from carriers in 2-3 weeks?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7.5
If this screen shot of a conversation with an O2 rep can be believed, the roll-out of the Mango update for Windows Phone 7 may start sooner than we expect.
While we know at the moment that Mango the OS itself is ready, and we have heard from HTC that their customization itself is ready also, we all expect that carriers will be the big stumbling block, delaying the release by months. If the screen shot above is any indication, Microsoft may have finally gotten the carrier’s ducks in a row and may start and finish the roll-out pretty rapidly.
We shall of course cross our fingers.

Thanks to a developer by the name of Luis Hector Chavez, there is now a Google talk application available in the Windows Phone Marketplace by the name of GChat.

You can take any of your contacts from GChat and pin them in a tile of their own directly on the home screen. You can also have what is called off-the-record conversations that have special and delicate handling.

Acer says Google-Motorola deal "a good gift to Microsoft"
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftAcerMotorolaGoogle
Microsoft will end up being the big winner after Google’s acquisition of Motorola as other Android phone makers will be alienated by the prospect of rivaling with Google - this statement is not a fact, but comes from a senior executive over at Acer.
"They work against some of their clients," Walter Deppeler, Acer's Europe, Middle East and Africa operations president said. "It was a good gift to Microsoft," he added in an interview for Reuters at IFA.
With that in mind, Acer, which recently slipped from being the second-largest PC maker in the world, would be careful when placing its bets on a particular mobile platform. The company would first consider implications of the $12.5 billion Googl...
