Samsung confirms Windows Phone 8 coming by year's end with elements of Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSamsungMicrosoftWindows 8
Samsung can certainly be labeled as a company with much more invested in Android than Windows Phone, but the company has reiterated its resolve to support Microsoft's mobile OS and has confirmed some suspicions about the next big update to Windows Phone 8.
We have heard rumors for a while that Windows Phone 8 (codenamed Apollo) will be released in Q4 of this year, but Samsung confirmed that WP8 will be hitting by the end of the year. Samsung also said that WP8 will "increase the compatibility of the platform", which is somewhat vague, but we're hoping that means that we'll see an increase in supported hardware, possibly meaning higher-resolution screens, multi-core processors and maybe new ...

Skype for Windows Phone beta is now available
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Microsoft has just announced that Skype for Windows Phone has finally landed on the Marketplace in its beta form, and it offers video calling, instant messaging and most other functions you’d expect. It is also making full use of the simplicity and cleanness of the Metro UI.
Voice calls on Skype for Windows Phone are supported not only over Wi-Fi networks, but also over 3G and 4G mobile networks. The app is well designed - while you’re in a call you just swipe to the left to get to the messaging window so you can simultaneously do both.
The application supports landscape orientation and it also allows for group instant messaging. It’s pretty simple to use too - you just tap on the live tile ...

256 MB Windows Phones will be able to run 95% of current Marketplace apps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Microsoft has released some more information about their new low-cost platform.
The update will support new Qualcomm 7x27a “system on a chip” chipsets and only 256 MB memory by using a new paging system which will allow apps to address more memory that physically present on the device.
Microsoft says in their tests 95% of Marketplace apps will run on these handsets, and Microsoft is working with the remaining 5% to make their apps compatible.
In the mean time however these incompatible apps will be flagged in Marketplace so users do not download them unwittingly.
The first two devices running the update will be the Nokia Lumia 610 and the ZTE Orbit. Both handsets will be available in Q2 2012...

Microsoft’s Greg Sullivan demonstrated the rumoured improvements in the MMS functionality in Windows Phone Tango to Laptop Magazine.
The video demoes attaching multiple pictures and also voice notes, and besides the MMS updates, better memory management, wider processor support and Chinese CDMA support, Greg also noted that the update included under the hood changes such as security updates, with the Verge noting today that the SMS of Death issue has been fixed in the new software.

While we can't really say that we're surprised, Nokia has snagged the top spot for Windows Phone devices. Strategy Analytics reports that the Finnish smartphone maker now sits atop the global charts for the Microsoft mobile OS after being in the game for just one quarter. Nokia overtook HTC and Samsung to claim a 33% market share with 0.9 million out of the 2.7 million units shipped in Q4. HP reportedly planning Windows 8 tablets using Intel and Qualcomm processors
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsMicrosoftHPIntelWindows 8
HP CEO Meg Whitman recently told investors that the company will be shipping Windows 8 products by the end of the year, and now CNET is reporting some possible details about its tablet plans. According to the site, HP is working on at least three different Windows 8 tablets, powered by chips from Intel and Qualcomm. The two Intel models are said to utilize the chipmaker's 32nm Atom Clover Trail platform, and will come in two distinct form factors. The first is reportedly a laptop / tablet hybrid — a device type that some of HP's competitors believe in — while the second is a more traditional tablet aimed at business customers. The third product is said to be powered by a Qualcomm processor, ...

Xbox 360 gets 10th Anniversary Edition in Europe with extra games and accessories
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXbox 360 S
Ah, the Xbox 360. Has it really been ten years? Well, no, it hasn’t, but come March 14th it’ll be the 10th anniversary of the original Xbox’s debut in Europe. To help celebrate that (and perhaps distract you from the fact that the 360 could really use a refresh) Microsoft is readying a new bundle for Europe, revealed by Amazon France and spotted by The Examiner. The collection includes a load of goodies including an extra controller, both physical and digital games, and a little free Xbox Live time for your trouble.

Windows support will last forever (almost), thank you Microsoft!
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7Windows VistaWindows XP
Just when you needed one more reason to carry on loving Windows Vista, Microsoft has gone and increased its customer support period. An extension has also been granted to Windows 7, which will get a full ten years of support instead of the usual five. There's been no announcement or fanfare, except for a brief communication from Microsoft Japan that sets out the new end dates. XP's support will stop in 2014, Vista's will shut down in 2017 and Windows 7's will come to a close in post-apocalyptic 2020, at which point call center staff will no doubt throw a party on Europa.

Microsoft snipes at Google Apps in latest ad
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftGoogle
Microsoft can’t seem to stop taking pot-shots at Google, and following the privacy-fear-flogging Gmail Man video comes an attack on the Office-rivaling Google Apps. The new video – which you can see after the cut – pits a sleazy Google Apps salesman against the enterprise market and, somewhat bizarrely, some soulful crooning about how we should fear the “Googlighting” man and the possibility that Google could simply pull the plug on features we’re reliant on or, in fact, whole services.

Windows 8 to bring better language support, finally including English
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
In addition to better file management, accessibility and that all important new logo, Redmond's engineers are also promising improved language support in Windows 8. So far, Microsoft admits it's seen this as a "local-market feature," putting the onus on non-English users to track down special copies of the OS or language packs online. But the new OS will bring a friendlier philosophy, in which multilingual support is regarded as a "feature for everyone everywhere" and the Control Panel becomes a "one-stop place" to find and install any of 109 different idioms. These will include 13 new interface packs, allowing commonly used Windows features to be displayed in Scottish Gaelic, Punjabi, Uyghu...

Microsoft files antitrust complaint against Motorola
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftMotorola
Microsoft has joined Apple in filing an antitrust complaint against Motorola Mobility, claiming the company is trying to use online video standards patents as a weapon, and that new owner Google is doing nothing to stop it. According to Microsoft’s Deputy General Counsel, Dave Heiner, Motorola is demanding the company yank Windows PCs, Xbox 360 consoles and more from store shelves in North America and Europe, “or else remove their standards-based ability to play video and connect wirelessly.” That, Heiner argues, is antitrust behavior, and he shows Microsoft’s sums to prove it: Motorola apparently wants 1,125x the rate in royalty payments as other patent holders.

Microsoft Extends Support Lifecycle for Windows 7 and Vista
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7Windows Vista
If you're a seasoned Windows user, you probably know how support for the OS works. That is, consumers can expect five years of support for each version while businesses are offered a further five years on top of that. However, Microsoft this past weekend confirmed a change to its support policy that will see all users upgraded to the 10-year support cycle previously only afforded to commercial users.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
According to the Seattle Times, Microsoft will be launching an online ad campaign this week with the Smoked by Windows Phone theme.
This will consist of a series of online ads challenging those who use iPhones, Android phones or other mobile devices to beat the speed of a Windows Phone in doing a browser search, sharing with their social network or shooting and posting a photo.
The 12 ads will run on tech sites as well as the Windows Phone Facebook page until the start of April.
Microsoft’s Windows Phone Facebook page will show video footage from the original "Smoked by Windows Phone" challenge featuring Ben “the pc guy” Rudolph which took place at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
