HTC to launch as many as eight new smartphones in Q3
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
HTC chief executive Peter Chou on Tuesday said that the Taiwan-based smartphone vendor is scheduled to launch between six and eight new smartphone models this quarter. HTC continues to report record quarter after record quarter, and the onslaught of new handsets it is preparing for the fall season will give the vendor a great shot to top the record 12.1 million smartphones it shipped in the second quarter. The popular smartphone maker currently expects to ship 13.5 million handsets in the September quarter, its CEO says. Chou also stated that all of the devices HTC launches in the third quarter will be middle or high-end models, which will likely help the average selling price of HTC phones ...

HTC clarifies how the unlocking bootloader procedure will work
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
It’s funny, HTC makes some of the best Android devices on the market, from a specification and build quality perspective, but then they molest Google’s mobile operating system with their Sense overlay because they somehow think that as a hardware maker they understand software better than Google engineers. They then reach out to the community and ask them what they want in future HTC devices, and the community unanimously agrees that they need an unlocked bootloader, which in layman’s terms is the capability to install a different version of Android on your phone because you can’t stand the default configuration. HTC agrees to the demands and portray themselves as heros for listening to thei...

If the package -- and price -- are right, make your way to the source link and push through some of that fun paperwork.

HTC Droid Incredible 2 lightens up with new silver wardrobe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCDROID Incredible 2
Tired of your ho-hum black original HTC Droid Incredible? Thinking of trading up for a shiny new Gingerbread model? Well, this may influence your decision a bit. Pocketnow is reporting that Verizon will soon be offering a new silver version of the HTC Droid Incredible 2 (Incredible S) to be sold alongside the original black edition. Keeping suit with many other lighter phones we've seen these days, the company chose a pretty standard two-tone design and will keep the same specs as its elder sibling. Pricing should be the same as well, although, with a number of new devices due out soon, perhaps a discount could be in order. No word yet on a release date, but keep your eyes peeled -- especial...

HTC Desire gets updated to Gingerbread, but not really
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
If you are among the bunch of people still holding on to their trusty HTC Desire, you might not like the news that we have to share with you. It looks like the smartphone will not be treated to Gingerbread after all, or at least not in the form of a full-fledged update that HTC was expected to release by the end of July.
Technically, an official Gingerbread ROM for the HTC Desire will be available for download, yet it will not be pushed out to the general public due to a number of issues that the HTC developer team simply couldn't hurdle. HTC stated on its Facebook page that “certain functions may no longer be usable after re-flashing the ROM, including but not limited to MMS and SMS”, but ...

HTC Desire Gingerbread update available, excludes US and comes with long list of caveats
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
First off, if you own the North American variant of this handset then you're out of luck. Likewise, Japanese, South Korean and some German handsets are also excluded. Still here? Okay then, but you might not like what comes next. We already knew that either the Sense UI or some pre-installed apps would be cleared out to make room in the Gingerbread house, but now it seems the update is so unstable that HTC is only prepared to release it as a ROM via its developer site. That means a factory reset of your device, a bunch of worries about SMS and MMS not working properly, and a cold disclaimer in the event of things going wrong. Still, at least HTC gave (some of) us the choice. Visit the source...

Custom HTC WP7 ROM’s Iminent?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHTCWindows Phone 7
Windows Phone Hacker have just reported that the Dark Forces Team (DFT) have successfully created an RSPL / HSPL solution for a majority of HTC’s Windows Phones. This of course comes our way via XDA-Developers. If you are unfamiliar, HSPL is the bootloader that allows for custom ROM’s to be loaded onto phones. Chefs on XDA-Developers have done an amazing job releasing custom Windows Mobile 6.x ROM’s for the past few years. In fact, this was normally the only way you could get WM6.5 on your device, because software updates were very inconsistent between phone manufacturers.
With Microsoft’s new update approach for all devices, will HSPL be necessary for Windows Phone 7? There are a couple...

Firmware update for Vodafone's HTC 7 Trophy addresses minor performance issues
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC7 Trophy
We can all smell the fresh scent around us as Windows Phone 7 owners all around the world wait patiently for Mango’s arrival, thus, signaling a whole new chapter for the budding platform.
In the meantime though, Vodafone HTC 7 Trophy owners are getting a minor firmware update right now that corrects some of the problematic issues that some people are experiencing. As much as they’d love to see Mango arrive earlier than expected, this firmware update simply addresses issues regarding battery life, touch responsiveness, and calling quality – and that’s all folks! Affected handset owns will naturally be pleased by it, but we’re sure that they’re still dreaming of the day when Mango arrives.

HTC Reports Record Profits In Q2, 12.1 Million Handsets Shipped
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
Looks like things are going well over in Taiwan, as HTC has reported record-breaking Q2 results this morning. In fact, the company sold 12.1 million units in the second quarter totaling a 123.7 percent year-over-year growth rate. After Q2 taxes, that brings YOY growth to 102.9 percent. If you aren’t good with percentages, that’s huge. In terms of quarterly growth, HTC is up 24.8 percent from the first quarter.
A solid chunk of this can be attributed to China, which was HTC’s “standout” market. Entry-level models such as the Wildfire S, Salsa, and ChaCha (a.k.a. AT&T’s Status Facebook phone) also made an impact by broadening HTC’s portfolio. Of course, the Sensation and the Evo 3D certainly d...

Acer moving to the cloud, woos talent from HTC, Asus, Pegatron
Like UnlikeFiled in: ASUSAcerHTC
Acer seems to be relatively quiet on the mobile front recently, but that silence might be of the eery type just before a storm – the company has sacked its chief executive officer in March and since then has been stepping up its R&D and smartphone and tablet effort. Just a couple of days ago, Acer set up a new global research and development center in Chongqing, China, pouring some $4 million into future software and services. In addition, the Taiwanese manufacturer is rumored to be looking to acquire California-based cloud-service provider iGware for $320 million. The deal envisages a new cloud service integrated into the company's software. Acer Cloud, as it could be called, is expected to...

Vodafone axes EVO 3D before it even hits shelves
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCEVO 3D
Keen-eyed observers, or those who registered to be notified about the EVO 3D, may have noticed a sudden dearth of glasses-free 3D phones coming to Vodafone. Apparently, the British carrier's execs are not the patient type. After several delays, Vodafone has decided to simply ax the handset rather than wait out HTC's supply issues, and has removed it from the company's "Coming Soon" page. Lets just hope its customers are a bit more understanding -- especially those who signed up to get first-crack at the now canceled phone.

HTC Wildfire S swaggers CDMA bands at FCC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCWildfire S
True to its namesake, the Wildfire S is preparing to blaze across our native prairies without abandon. After gaining the FCC's nod of acceptance for use on our 1900 / 850MHz HSPA bands -- followed by T-Mobile's official announcement -- the fun-sized candybar has received FCC approval for igniting our CDMA networks. A leaked roadmap suggests the Gingerbread treat is destined for US Cellular in October, but don't be surprised if the little guy appears at Cricket, MetroPCS, Virgin Mobile, and the like. Even Verizon could benefit from the Wildfire S, seeing that the Motorola Citrus is downright sour. Just promise not to name it the Droid Burn, okay?

Apple's Mac OS X infringes on HTC-owned S3 patents, ITC rules
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleHTC
United States International Trade Commission judge James Gildea has ruled that Apple’s Mac OS X operating system infringes on two patents owned by S3. Judge Gildea also ruled that the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch do not infringe on S3′s patents, however. The patents in question are related to NVIDIA graphics chips used in Apple’s Mac computers, but it is unclear which devices exactly are infringing on S3′s technology. HTC purchased S3 for $300 million in early July, and a different ITC judge recently ruled that the Taiwanese company is guilty of infringing on two patents owned by Apple related to a “system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data,” and a “...

T-Mobile HTC HD7 firmware update also being pushed out
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCHD7
WPCentral reports, besides the Dell Venue Pro, T-Mobile is also pushing out a firmware update for the HTC HD7.
The update moves the firmware from 2250.09.12001.531 to 2250.21.30102.531 and the radio version from 5.51.09.11a_22.31.50.09U to 5.65.09.25a_22.45.50.21U.
The rather suspicious timing of all the firmware updates suggests Microsoft may be laying the ground work for the upcoming Mango update, now expected sooner rather than later.
Have any of our readers received the update and noticed any differences in performance? Let us know below.

It's the end of life for the HTC EVO 4G, Samsung Epic 4G and other Sprint models
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungHTCEVO 4GEpic 4G
A leaked screenshot of an internal Sprint document was obtained by SprintFeed, and shows which devices the carrier has branded as "EOL" (end of life, although end of the line is more appropriate) and when the handsets will be phased out. Some of the phones being removed from Sprint's lineup are household names such as the HTC EVO 4G, the nation's first 4G enabled device. Also being phased out is the carrier's second 4G handset, the Samsung Epic 4G. Both devices have been replaced with newer models like the HTC EVO 3D and the Samsung built Nexus S 4G, offering the latest high-end specs to Sprint customers with the former adding 3D functionality.
