HTC Primo specs leaked; includes Android 4.0 and Beats Audio
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0One V
The new fad in Android models seems to be smaller form factors with mid-to high end specs. Just the other day, we told you about the Sony Ericsson Kumquat, which fits into this mold. Now, thanks to a tipster for Stuff, we see low to mid range specs allegedly heading for the HTC Primo. With a 3.7 inch Super AMOLED display strengthened by Gorilla Glass and a dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm processor under the hood, the HTC Primo would have the muscles to get the job done. On board is 512MB of RAM and a 5MP camera on back that captures 720p video. The dual-shutter on the camera allows you to snap photos while taking video at the same time and the f/2.0 aperture should help you take decent pictures in l...

Cydia-style app store for Android coming soon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google’s open approach with the Android platform means developers can build applications that make use of parts of the operating system that iOS developers can’t even consider if they hope to get their apps approved for distribution through Apple’s App Store. Even still, however, there are a number of Android developers with apps that have been banned from Google’s Android Market for various reasons. While iOS developers looking to get around Apple’s strict policies can turn to Cydia, the third-party app store available to jailbreakers, Android developers with banned apps do not have a centralized location through which they can distribute their wares — but that will soon change. Android dev...

HTC Flyer to get treated to ICS in Q1 2012?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsHTCGoogleFlyerAndroid 4.0
HTC’s 7-inch stylus-supporting Flyer has seen its price slashed to the very affordable $299, then it was just recently updated to 3.2 Honeycomb, and now it’s confirmed to get further up in the Android hierarchy to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) in Q1 2012.
The update wasn’t officially confirmed, though - it slipped in a customer service rep mention in France, so we’d take it with a grain of salt.
Good news is that the first quarter of the year has already started and, if true, we’re left to wait nine weeks until the update arrives. Have you updated your HTC Flyer to Honeycomb already? Let us know in the comments below.

Google requiring new users adopt Gmail, Google+
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google is now steering users into extra services when they register a new Google account on the sign-up page. Now, a new subscriber must provide more information then in the past to create an account, which in turn is automatically used to enroll them in Google+ and create a Gmail account. Although it's not explicitly stated, users can opt out, but the move counts on them accepting the extra features by default.
In the past, if an individual wanted to create a Google account, all they had to do was provide an e-mail address or open up a Gmail account. This would allow that user to make online purchases, upload files to Google Docs, or use Google Calendar.
Now, Google is asking those wishing ...

Google could see its revenue from mobile ads rise to $5.8 billion this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Being an open source system, Google receives zilch from each phone loaded with Android. But that doesn't mean that Google isn't bringing in money from the smartphone and tablet businesses. According to Jim Friedland, an analyst with brokerage firm Cowen, Google is bringing in $7 for each smartphone and tablet sold including Android and iOS devices. The money comes from mobile display and search ads. Considering that the number of mobile devices worldwide is expected to nearly double from 509 million last year to 914 million this year, Google's mobile ad revenues are estimated by Cowen to surge from an estimated $2.5 billion in 2011 to $5.8 billion in 2012.
Interestingly enough, Google's CEO...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesire HDAndroid 2.3
Canada’s TELUS is rolling out an OTA update for the HTC Desire HD, bringing the smartphone up to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. Aside from the “standard” features Gingerbread brings to the table such as improved copy/paste, UI refinements, improved power management and video calls support, there are some Desire HD specific stuff included, most notably the new version (3.0) of the HTC Sense UI. Moreover, there’s the HTC Watch app from where you can rent or buy the latest movies and shows, as well as a number of bug fixes under the hood that improve the stability of the device.
In a nutshell, the second you see that the new firmware is available, hit the update button and take it from there. Make ...

Google+ Users Hit 90 Million
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google said Thursday that its Google+ social network now has 90 million users, up from 40 million in October.
Engagement is also growing, Google CEO Larry Page said during a fourth-quarter earnings call. More than 60 percent of Google+ users engage with the service daily and 80 percent engage weekly, he said.
Google has shipped a new Google+ feature every day since the network's June debut, Page continued. This week, for example, the service added support for automatic video posts via Webcam, eliminating the need to upload the clip to YouTube, as well as the ability to start a Google+ conversation directly from search results.

Google Q4 2011 earnings: $10.6 billion in revenue, 90 million Google+ users

Google just released its Q4 2011 financial report, and as is usually the case with the search giant, both revenues and profits are up from last year. The company reported $10.58 billion in revenue for Q4 2011 with net income of $2.71 billion.
Revenues were up 25 percent over the same quarter in 2010, and net income was up a modest $170 million over last year. Google pointed out that revenues for the entire year were up 29 percent over 2010. The company currently has $44.6 billion in cash and liquid assets.

EU to decide on Google, Motorola Mobility deal on February 13th
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotorolaGoogle
The Google, Motorola Mobility deal is still awaiting regulatory approval from both the U.S. and the EU. Last month, the later of the two had suspended the January 10th deadline while waiting to receive additional information on the acquisition from Google.
Reuters is reporting that the EU regulators have set a new deadline of February 13, 2012 in order to decide whether or not Google may proceed with its purchase of Motorola Mobility. We are left to assume they have received all the required information about the deal and are using this time to reach a decision.

Hack breaks Hulu Plus free from supported device chains, embraces Androids of every shape and color
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
It's not TV, it's Hulu Plus and it's coming to the Android device of your choosing -- somewhat, unofficially. While the main ad-supported, streaming video site may have failed to seek refuge in the arms of a new owner last year, its subscription mobile offshoot is now finding a home in all Googlefied phones and tablets via a modified .apk created by XDA Developers member Vgeezy. But before you get all hot and bothered, keep in mind this jailbroken app still requires a subscription to work, although you won't need root to install it. So, any users looking for a quick and illicit content fix will have to look elsewhere. For everyone else, there's the source link below.

Android 4.0 for Tablets shouldn’t be judged until it’s released
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsGoogleAndroid 4.0
Last week it was announced that the Transformer Prime would be the first certified tablet to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, then today the XOOM ICS update began rolling out, but there’s one judgement article out there produced by a high-ranking set of names which has passed judgement on it for those who would take their for granted that they know all about it from their 2 minutes of playtime. What they say, as it were, is that they know a guy with a Motorola tablet who has Ice Cream Sandwich on it and told them that it wasn’t very good. They then say they were at CES and spoke with a less than knowledgeable presenter who didn’t know ICS from Honeycomb.

Nokia CEO: Android is too fragmented
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsNOKIAGoogleAndroid
Stephen Elop has told Pocket-lint that he thinks Google's Android operating system is too fragmented, a pitfall he wants to avoid with Windows Phone 7 and Nokia in the future.
Talking to Pocket-lint at CES in Las Vegas, the Nokia CEO said:
"We don't want fragmentation being introduced into Windows Phone because we are beginning to see how in a certain other eco-system that fragmentation becomes a problem."

Woz disses iPhone limitations, wishes it was like Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroid
You’ll often hear from people that the iPhone is just better than Android because it’s more polished, beautiful and the app environment is better but the counter to that is that Android gives you more flexibility and power. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak still considers the iPhone the best but even he’ll admit that Google and its partners have surpassed Apple in many aspects.

Google to use its homepage to protest SOPA
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
In its effort to protest the controversial SOPA bill, Google will host a link to an explanation of its opposition on its popular home page. The link will go live on Wednesday, according to CNET, and thus join Wikipedia, Reddit and other tech firms in showing their disagreement for SOPA and the Protect IP Act (PIPA), both of which were spurred on by movie studios and music labels.

Google demos QR code Gmail access, claims something better in store
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
What's the big G up to here, then? It seems the Gmail team has been tinkering with a new secure method of accessing your precious email. Type your credentials into your phone, then scan a QR code in the browser to log in. It's ideal for public machines where typing your password might gift your credentials to any key-logging software. Sadly though, it seems the venture was just an experiment, with Google employee Dirk Balfanz confirming so on his Plus account. So, we might not be accessing our Gmail sans keyboard anytime soon, but with said staffer also teasing that his team are working on something "even better" who knows how we'll be logging on in the near future -- let's just hope it's no...
