Amazon on Thursday announced that its mobile marketplace, the Amazon Appstore, is celebrating its first birthday. The company is kicking of its celebration with a week of deals on some of its most popular apps. “Customers have used the Amazon Appstore to test drive and buy millions of apps and games for their Kindle Fire and other Android devices in the first year alone,” said Aaron Rubenson, director of Amazon Appstore for Android. “To thank customers for shopping with us, we worked closely with our developers to offer special discounts on some of the most popular apps all week long.” Amazon’s selection of Android apps has grown nearly eight-fold since it launched last year, from 4,000 apps...

Google hires Kevin Rose
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Kevin Rose has been something of an Internet icon since the start of the Web 2.0 trend. Rose has been the co-founder or founder of a number of ventures including Revision3, Digg, Pownce, and Milk. The products born from Rose's companies have spanned the gamut from Internet TV, socially curated news, micro-blogging, and even product ranking with his Oink app. And now, starting Monday, Kevin Rose will be a Google employee.
The report says that Google will not be explicitly purchasing Rose's latest company, Milk, which killed off Oink, its only app, just yesterday. Rather, Google will be hiring Rose as well as a few key people from the Milk team. Given the products Rose has been a part of befo...

Verizon Wireless has begun distributing an update for the Motorola DROID X2 smartphone. The update fixes a handful of bugs in the device's software and patches a security hole. Unfortunately it does not update the DROID X2 to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and Motorola has not announced plans to do so in the future. Users should get a notification on their handsets when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.

Google Nexus S and Google Nexus S 4G both to get Android 4.0 update in the next few weeks
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesGoogleNexus SNexus S 4G
Own a Google Nexus S or a Google Nexus S 4G? If you are sporting either model, we have some good news. A source for Engadget says that the Android 4.0 update is coming to both models in the next few weeks. Of course, that doesn't give us a precise date to work with, but at least you know it is on the way. Pity the poor Motorola DROID RAZR owners who only know for now that while their device will get Ice Cream Sandwich according to the manufacturer, the update is so early in the process that Motorola can't even venture a guess which quarter it will be available.

Is it patent troll versus patent troll?
A subsidiary of Cascades Ventures, a patent licensing company, has sued RPX Corp, a spinoff of Intellectual Ventures, as well as Dell, Google, HTC, LG, and Motorola Mobility for violations of antitrust law and conspiracy to "monopsonize," or accumulate a monopoly of sorts over the buyer's side of the market.
Cascades Computer Innovation seeks damages and other retribution in a filing dated Mar. 6. For its part, an RPX spokesman said that the company had seen the suit but declined to comment.

Google to use 'semantic search' to add answers to search results, says WSJ
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google is apparently planning the biggest shakeup in its search results page in a long time, according to the Wall Street Journal. The plan is apparently to use "semantic search" to analyze the meaning of words and phrases typed into the search query box and then return relevant answers instead of a simple list of ranked results. The move would mirror functionality already offered by Microsoft's Bing search engine, which offers direct answers on questions about flights, travel, and other queries.

Oracle suit against Google goes to trial next month
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
A U.S. judge in San Francisco has scheduled the trial between Oracle and Google for April 16th, Reuters reported on Tuesday. Oracle sued Google in 2010, alleging that the Mountain View-based company’s Android operating system infringes Oracle’s intellectual property covering the Java programming language. In addition, the company is also suing Google for copyright infringement, which could earn Oracle hundreds of millions of dollars. “These patent and copyright claims are without merit, and we look forward to defending against them at trial,” Google spokesman Jim Prosser said. The trial is expected to last eight weeks.

Chromium OS shown working with desktop manager
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleChromium OS
Since its inception, the Google Chrome operating system for Chromebook computers has been unique in its ability to work completely independently of the desktop environment. Very recently the open-source version of Chrome OS, Chromium, has been seen to be amped up by developers in a setup called Aura Shell to have not only a desktop which interacts directly with the offline storage space of the hardware its running on, but applications other than the Chrome browser being launched directly from the desktop as well. While some might say that this defeats the purpose of Chrome OS entirely, the developers working on this project insist that because this version of the OS still has a very cloud-ba...

The Internet is the Future for HDTV Success
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsAppleGoogle
The TV industry is changing and it looks like TV manufacturers could lose the battle. In recent years the internet has provided a whole new way to provide content to people. While TVs have tried their hardest to provide internet access to their consumers, to many it just doesn’t seem worth the purchase. Instead they are turning to their computers, tablets, and even their smartphones and watching content through them instead of watching it on a huge 46 inch screen. One of the main reasons why the TV lags behind with providing internet content is to the lack of content available to them. Last year, Google tried to provide a platform that gave TVs the same unlimited internet access that any com...

Samsung doesn't deny Android-based camera
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleAndroid
Samsung has refused to confirm reports that it is working on an Android-based camera, only to say it is looking at the idea. The non-denial, which says 'it is something we are monitoring,' comes in response to reports from tech website Engadget that it is considering an 'open' camera operating system. However, while the site goes on to speculate that Android makes sense, based on its parent company's use of the OS on its smartphones, we think there are other reasons for Samsung to use Android.
