Chrome OS coming to ARM?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Many moons ago, Google made it quite clear we wouldn't be seeing its browser-based OS on any tablets or phones, but it never said Chrome OS wouldn't run on devices powered by similar silicon. In fact, the issues tracker at the Chromium OS project shows that work's being done to get Chrome OS compatible with ARM architecture, and in particular a Samsung Exynos 5250 chip. That Sammy silicon appears to be inside a new bit of hardware, codenamed "Daisy," but deeper digging failed to provide further details about the mystery device. While it certainly seems like Google's working on a new ARM-powered gadget, it's important to note that the Chromium project functions largely via user contributions,...

AT&T rolls out Android 4.0 to HTC Vivid, other devices getting ICS in the 'coming months'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCAT&TGoogleAndroid 4.0Vivid
Be still our beating heart. Just two weeks ago we heard Android 4.0 -- that upgrade lovingly referred to as Ice Cream Sandwich -- would be reaching the HTC Vivid "in the coming weeks." We even saw the update trickle in to select devices last week without any official notice from the mother ship. AT&T's finally ready to open the floodgates and pour the refresh out to the masses. This download in particular includes Sense 3.6, but throws in third-party Beats Audio support -- a feature that until now has only been seen in version 4.0. If you're packing a Vivid, just make sure you're hooked up to WiFi and head to the settings to get your download on. If it doesn't find the update yet, you also h...

Google Voice gets tighter integration with Android 4.0 ICS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
Google has released an update to the Google Voice app for Android that gives it greater integration with the native dialer in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The new integration lets Google Voice users access their Google Voice messages right from within the call log of the native dialer app. Users can control the playback speed of voicemails to speed up or slow down the message as they listen to it. The new feature can be activated by toggling the "Voicemail display" option in the settings section of the updated Google Voice app. The update is available for free from the Google Play Store now, though the new integration is only available to Android 4.0 devices.

UK: Samsung Galaxy S II Android 4.0 update lives on Three; Vodafone users to get it soon, too
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGalaxy S IIAndroid 4.0
British operator-branded versions of the Samsung Galaxy S II have started getting their Ice Cream Sandwich servings with Three leading the way, allowing its SGS2 users to get the latest version of Android as we speak.
Meanwhile, Vodafone is still testing the new software and has rather released what it calls the “preparatory” update, which should reportedly make your Galaxy S II ready for Android 4. According to the Big Red carrier, the new software is still in the testing phase and will be released to the general public once every aspect of it has been thoroughly tested out. Guess that’s a good thing, though I must say I don’t get what there is to test. Perhaps some of the apps Voda is prel...

Samsung Galaxy S II on Three gets Ice Cream Sandwich
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGalaxy S IIAndroid 4.0
Samsung Galaxy S II owners who are signed up to Three can now update their phones to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The network provider has made the new operating system available via Samsung Kies.
Samsung had previously announced that the software update would start to roll out to its devices from yesterday, 19 March, and it has remained true to its word. Three is the first network to announce its availability in the UK, however.
Previously, Samsung had released a statement saying that eventual roll-out dates for ICS would be left to individual providers. "The availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process," it said.

Chrome briefly passes Internet Explorer to become most popular weekend web browser
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Web analytics firm StatCounter on Wednesday announced that Google’s Chrome web browser overtook Microsoft’s Internet Explorer last Sunday to become the most popular weekend browser, Reuters reported. “While it is only one day, this is a milestone,” said Aodhan Cullen, StatCounter’s chief executive. “At weekends, when people are free to choose what browser to use, many of them are selecting Chrome in preference to IE.” On March 18th, a total of 32.7% of all browsing was done using Chrome, while Internet Explorer had a 32.5% share. When people returned to their offices on Monday, however, Microsoft’s browser increased its share to 35% and Google’s share slipped to 30%. “Whether Chrome can take...

Google says "sorry" by giving $5 to all Wallet users
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The past few weeks may have been somewhat frustrating for Google Wallet users, given that security holes within the service were exposed by hackers. Soon after the vulnerability was discovered, adding funds via Google Wallet prepaid cards was temporarily disabled due to security concerns. Thankfully, the recent software updates have taken care of the issue, so Google Wallet should be working just fine once more. And as a way of saying "we're sorry", Google is adding $5 credit to the accounts of its Wallet subscribers.

Google defends Hotfile's right to 'safe harbor' under DMCA
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The MPAA filed lawsuit against Hotfile little over a year ago, arguing that the cyberlocker had made a business out of enabling massive digital theft by giving users a place to store and share pirated movies. Now, in the aftermath of Megaupload's closure, the group is asking for a summary judgement to effectively shut the site down, arguing that Hotfile is a piracy haven and should not be eligible for DMCA safe harbor protection.
According to TorrentFreak, this request didn't go unnoticed by Google, who has become a somewhat unexpected ally of Hotfile with the filing of an 'amicus brief' objecting to the MPAA's "distortion" of the facts. According to Google, the movie studios are misleading ...

Samsung releases ICS update source code for Galaxy S II
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGalaxy S IIAndroid 4.0
Source code is for modders what chum is to sharks, and Samsung is stirring up the waters in the Samsung Galaxy S II community with the source code for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. The update has been working its way out to Europe and Asia, and now Samsung has released the source code for it.
It should be noted that this is obviously the code for the base version of the Galaxy S II (model GT-I9100), so there are no guarantees that the code will be able to be turned into custom ROMs for carrier variants of the device, like the AT&T Skyrocket, etc. Still, it could go a long way in helping modders create custom ROMs. It could definitely help out Team Douche in its work on Cyanogen...

Oracle's final damage claim against Google well under $100 million
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
My, my, my, how the mighty have fallen. In this case, the mighty is the roughly $6 billion Oracle initially sought in its suit against Google. By September of last year that number had dropped to a comparatively paltry $2 billion, which was still too high for presiding Judge William Alsup. Now that has plummeted precipitously, with Oracle's new starting figure sitting at $32.3 million. Of course, the final total for the damages will likely be higher than that, but we'd be mighty shocked if the ultimate settlement was even close to $100 million. Google's own estimates put the valuation at between $37.5 million and $46.6 million -- a far cry from the $100 million starting point Alsup had sugge...

Apple loses bid to obtain Motorola and Google data
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorolaGoogle
A U.S. judge earlier this month ordered Google and Motorola Mobility to turn over information about the development of the Android operating system and Google’s pending $12.5 billion acquisition of the manufacturer to Apple. Judge Richard A. Posner, however, has now denied the Cupertino-based company’s request, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. “The motion is vague and overbroad and Motorola’s objections are persuasive,” Posner wrote. Posner is the same judge who will preside over the back-to-back patent trials between Apple and Motorola. “If Apple desires a further court order compelling production of data within the scope of the March 5 order,” Posner said. “It will have to narrow its request...
