Google’s deal to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion is still waiting for approval by China’s antitrust agency. The deal has already received clearance from the US Justice Department, the European Union, and other jurisdictions around the world, making China the last hurdle. However, Chinese regulators have added another round of investigations, which could bring further delays.
In a regulatory filing made today by Motorola, it was revealed that China’s antitrust agency had extended the second phase of its invesitgations. Google and Motorola still expect the transaction to close within the first half of this year, but they could not provide any assurances that the transaction will be...

Google adds setting to change Gmail toolbar icons back to text

Google adds setting to change Gmail toolbar icons back to text

Posted on Mar 20, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Gmail's new design is sleeker and more unified, in part because there's so much less text in the interface — the new icon-based pages look sleeker and better. Apparently not everyone was enamored, though, especially users with vision problems who had more trouble distinguishing the Archive and Move icons than they had telling the two words apart. So Google's added a setting in Gmail that lets you switch easily from an icon-based toolbar to a text-based one, easily accessible in the General tab in Gmail settings. Switching to text makes the toolbar larger when you're on a smaller screen, and the page gets a little more crowded, but the toolbar options do become easier to see at a glance.

Google: UK copyright system 'is flawed and limits growth'

Google and a whole host of other institutions have put their name behind a letter to the Times newspaper which criticises the UK's current copyright laws and urges the government to embrace all the recommendations set out in the Hargreaves report.
Published in today's Times, the letter has been signed by Dan Cobley, UK marketing director at Google, as well as many more big names – including heads of universities, Father Ted creator Graham Linehan and Dame Lynne Brindley, chief executive of the British Library.
In the letter, the UK's current copyright laws are blamed for stifling innovation and growth in the country and notes that if the laws are changed then the UK will be able to compete i...

Google Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich update incoming

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG1

It's been reported that the long awaited Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Google Nexus S will be hitting the handset in the next few weeks.
The Nexus S was next in line to receive Ice Cream Sandwich last year, after the launch of the flagship Android 4.0 handset the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
We reported back in December that Google had pushed back its global roll out of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Nexus S as it wanted to monitor feedback from the few Nexus S users who did receive the update.

Google leaves data center servers in the dark

Google leaves data center servers in the dark

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

It sounds like some folks at Google are starting to go a little nuts over security. Apparently, Google is building a new data center in Silicon Valley and is so paranoid about security that it is said to be forcing the geeks working on the servers to work in the dark. As long as folks at Google don’t start urinating in jars with Howard Hughes-style levels of paranoia, I guess this is okay.

Linux 3.3 kernel outed, Android code now included in it

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG2

After years of being parallel, but not one, Android code is now getting into the latest Linux 3.3 kernel finally bringing clarity about how the open-source Android project should be handled and giving developers an easier path to create cross-platform applications. The kernels of Android and Linux have always been similar, but with this programmers will be able to run apps on the stock Linux kernel.

Google to app developers: the check is in the mail

Google to app developers: the check is in the mail

Even big companies forget to pay the bills every now and then. For example, Google's accounting department recently was so caught up in Linsanity, March Madness, waiting for season 4 of Breaking Bad or all of the above and forgot to make the usual monthly direct payment into the bank accounts of its European app developers.
Realizing its mistake, Google released a statement on Friday saying that it had initiated the payments on Thursday, March 15th and that it could take up to three more days for the funds to hit developer's bank accounts. While no reason for the delay in making the payments was given by the Mountain View based firm, perhaps switching names from the Android Market to Google...

Official Google+ app confirmed for Windows Phone

Official Google+ app confirmed for Windows Phone

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

If your mobile platform of choice is Windows Phone and you also enjoy Google’s social network, Google+, a ray of hope has shined from Twitter.
Dominik Sichling, a PR Spokesperson from Google Germany, tweeted that an official Google+ app is on the way for Windows Phone. Unfortunately he did not give a date or an indication of a timeframe, but it is good to know that an official app is definitely in the works.
While the overall success of Google+ is often debated, the service currently has mobile apps for both Android (obviously) and iPhone. If Google is serious about continuing to push its social networking service, making official apps for other popular platforms such as Windows Phone and Bl...

CyanogenMod disables root access by default, now requires user configuration

CyanogenMod disables root access by default, now requires user configuration

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG1

Holy crap! CyanogenMod, the custom ROM of choice for many power users, will no longer offer root access upon first install. Now before you panic, let's make this part clear: everyone so inclined may still enable superuser access -- for ADB, apps or both -- from the Developer Options menu. The biggest change, in fact, is that CyanogenMod is making a significant departure from the majority of custom ROM developers, which offer root access to all users by default (and often without their knowledge). The move is an attempt by CyanogenMod leaders to make the platform more secure, and given the number of ROMs that are based on CyanogenMod (or glean its packages), we wouldn't be particularly surpri...

Netflix reveals Android app tests that keep it running on 'around 1000' devices daily

Posted on Mar 16, 2012 by MG3

In a quick peek behind the curtain at what life can be like as an Android developer, Netflix's Tech Blog has posted details of the testing process for each iteration of its app. According to Netflix's own stats, after being initially released for just a handful of phones nearly a year ago it now streams to "almost around 1,000" different devices daily. The situation of building one app for different hardware, software (including CM7 and CM9), screen sizes and and other variations like hardware or software decoding presents many challenges, but the team has filtered down to 14 devices (10 phones, 4 tablets) that give maximum coverage for their daily tests. Add in an HTML5 frontend for the nat...
