ultrasn0w bumped to version 1.2.5, now unlocking even more iOS 5.0.1 devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Given that you're out on Christmas break and all, isn't it about time you finally tried out that whole "unlocking" thing you've been hearing about? A new build of ultrasn0w just hit the Cydia app store, with v1.2.5 adding more support for iOS 5.0.1. Of note, novice jailbreakers may want to reach out to more experienced pals before embarking, as you'll need a a compatible baseband in order for the unlock to work. The iPhone 3GS (running iOS 5.0.1.) is supported with the following basements: 04.26.08 – 05.11.07 – 05.12.01 – 05.13.04 – 06.15.00. The iPhone 4 is supported if your baseband checks in as 01.59.00. If you're looking to upgrade from a dustier firmware, make sure you preserve your bas...

HTC loses to Apple, several Android phones banned in the U.S.
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleHTCGoogleAndroid
The U.S. International Trade Commission finally issued its decision on a patent dispute between Apple and HTC. The determination states that several of the manufacturer's Android-based handsets will be banned from sale and import in the United States on April 12, 2012. HTC says not to worry though -- they have a plan.
HTC dodged the bullet for 8 of the 10 patent accusations made in April, but those last two were still good enough to land an injunction from the ITC. The determination blocks several of HTC's Android-based devices from import and outright bans the sale of those devices in the U.S. It is currently unknown what exact phones are subject to the injunction.

App Store generates 6 times more profit than Android Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsTabletsAppleGoogle
We all knew the App Store was the most profitable app catalog out there, but recent findings from Distimo show just how shockingly more cash it yields for developers. The top 200 apps in the App Store generate 6 times the profits of those in the Android Market. This makes it obvious why most programmers focus on iOS first and Android is usually only second-best.
The stats were all published by Distimo reporting about the January to November state of the application markets. Other interesting findings include the fact that Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace has outgrown the Nokia Ovi Store and the RIM BlackBerry App Worlds.

Apple Takes One Small Step Against HTC, One Giant Leap Against Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleHTCGoogleAndroid
Apple has been duking it out with Android manufacturers for the past couple years, and very few are safe. Samsung has already suffered some big losses with the banning of its Galaxy Tab in Germany and Australia. HTC, however, has remained mostly safe from Apple’s wrath.
In July the Taiwanese manufacturer had a close call, as Administrative Law Judge Carl Charneski ruled that HTC was infringing two of Apple’s proposed 10 patents. Of course, before any serious action could be taken the ITC needed to have a look, which is exactly what’s happened.

Trumstand iPhone dock uses a horn rather than electronics
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4iPhone 4s
We talk about a lot of iPhone speaker docks around here, and generally, they are crammed with digital amps and other electronic whatnots. This iPhone stand is different because it is an acoustic stand with no electronics that uses a horn like some sort of demented trumpet to increase the sound from your iPhone. The device is called the Trumstand.
You slip your iPhone into the dock holder, and that s-curve tube picks up the music from the speaker on the bottom of your smartphone and shoots it through the bends until it comes out of the horn opening like an old crank record player. There are two versions of the Trumstand with one offering gold plating and the other in sterling silver.

Apple acquires Israeli flash memory firm Anobit for $500 million
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple has reportedly completed its acquisition of Israel-based flash memory firm Anobit in a deal worth up to $500 million. Hebrew-language financial newspaper Calcalist on Tuesday claimed that a deal had been reached after reporting earlier this month that Apple was in late-stage talks to buy the fabless chip maker. Apple has not confirmed the acquisition. Anobit’s website says its proprietary technology “significantly improves endurance, performance and cost of flash storage products and systems,” and Apple already uses Anobit’s chips in a number of its mobile devices and notebook computers.

Apple's new iOS 5.0.1 build fixes SIM card errors for iPhone 4S
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
As we reported a few days ago, Apple has released a new build of iOS 5.0.1 specifically for iPhone 4S owners — but now we have official word from Apple as to what this update brings. Officially, this new build is designed to fix the pesky "No SIM card" errors that some users have experienced, though there's also new access to the iPhone's file system, which may enable loads of Siri hacking. Unfortunately, this isn't a delta update (which allows you to download only the updated parts of the OS over the air) — you'll need to back up your iPhone, download the software update, and do a full restore from scratch. Still, that's a small price to pay if your phone's SIM card has been acting up.

Apple may be building wearable iPods with Siri support and curved glass
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple may be secretly developing wearable iPods that offer full support for voice commands using the company’s Siri software. Details surrounding the supposed project were revealed by The New York Times on Monday. Apple is reportedly working on a “curved-glass iPod that would wrap around the wrist,” which sounds similar to a watch-like device that could replace the iPod nano and shuffle in gyms around the world. Presuming Siri support would be the same as it is on the iPhone 4S, users could command the device to play a specific song, check the weather or more. We’re even imagining deeper Siri integration where a user might be able to ask their iPod how far they have run or what their current...

ITC bans U.S. import of multiple HTC devices in Apple patent ruling
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
A judge with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled Monday that HTC is guilty of infringing Apple’s patents in several devices. The ITC also ordered a ban on the import of several of HTC’s smartphones although it is unclear which models are affected. The ban will take effect on April 19th. “Notice is hereby given that the U.S. International Trade Commission has found a violation of section 337 in this investigation and has issued a limited exclusion order prohibiting importation of infringing personal data and mobile communications devices and related software,” the ITC said in its determination. “The Commission has determined that exclusion of articles subject to this ...

iPhones, iPod Touches still on iOS 3.1.3 can't download new apps directly from the App Store
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesPortable Media PlayersOperating SystemsTabletsApple
While fragmentation is a rare(r) problem on iOS there's still quite a few users rocking older versions on their devices. Unfortunately for them, ever since a recent update on the 16th they haven't been able to download any new apps from the App Store straight to their devices. While users of older iPod Touches and iPhones stuck on 3.1.3 by choice or incompatibility with newer OSes can still update the apps they already have and transfer software from iTunes on a computer, they can't buy or install new ones directly from the device. We were able to confirm the issue on one of our own devices, while there's a pretty lengthy thread in Apple's support forum about the issue, but no official respo...

iTunes Match subscriptions halted in UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple has temporarily ceased accepting new subscribers to its iTunes Match music subscriptions service less than 24 hours after its official UK launch.
The £21.99-a-year service opened its doors outside of the US on Thursday, following a week of false starts and 'accidental' launches across new territories in Europe, Canada, Brazil and Australia.
Users in the UK were able to sign-up for the yearly subscription, which makes high-quality iTunes versions of your music collection files available to stream through iCloud, last night.
However, new members attempting to register through iTunes are now greeted with the message: "iTunes Match is temporarily not accepting new subscribers. Check back l...

Small explosion at Apple supplier plant
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
One of Apple’s suppliers, Pegatron, reported that a small explosion occurred at one of its locations in Shanghai, China. Pegatron said that a few workers were injured in the blast, but the incident will not have a large impact on production.
In a statement released earlier today, Pegatron also detailed that some machinery had suffered damaged, but it would be able to readjust the facility to minimize impact on operations and revenue.
The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. Sources close to the matter confirmed that this facility is partly used to manufacture Apple products.

Apple TV receives 4.4.4 firmware update with bug fixes
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
Apple has released an incremental software update for the second generation Apple TV that brings it to version 4.4.4, but before you get too excited, it's a pretty minor one. Aside from the usual performance and stability improvements, it fixes "an issue that displayed an error when playing some video content." Decidedly boring stuff, but it's still nice to see the media streamer receive support even as its rumored dual-core A5 chip-powered successor approaches. The update has already begun rolling out, so you should see it on your Apple TV shortly.

iPhone 4S jailbreak: Incredible Siri hack lets you shout settings
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
We’ve seen some impressive Siri hacks already, but this one is the ultimate reason you’ll be wanting an iPhone 4S jailbreak in your life: you can now tell Siri to toggle settings, and even read out the battery life.
While iOS has a thriving app community, there’s no denying that the inability to quickly turn off settings from the homescreen is a fundamental flaw – by contrast many Android phones have these settings in the ever-present pull down notification tray.
