AT&T to cancel unlimited data plans for users illegally tethering

AT&T to cancel unlimited data plans for users illegally tethering

Posted on Aug 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

According to information obtained by 9to5Mac, AT&T is actively moving users who make use of grandfathered, unlimited smartphone data plans for tethering, switching them to a current, and more expensive, tethering plan with a data cap. Previously AT&T had only warned such users that they needed to switch.
AT&T is sending letters out to users illegally tethering that gives them two options: stop tethering, or be switched off of the unlimited data plan that they are grandfathered into and be signed up for a limited data plan with a tethering option. The switch will occur after the date noted in each letter sent to the user, so AT&T is giving just a little more time for users to clean up their a...

Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S II now available for Stateside use on AT&T and T-Mobile

Posted on Aug 08, 2011 by MG1

Want the Samsung Galaxy S II so badly that you can't wait for it to be offered by your carrier? Well, if you are an AT&T or T-Mobile customer and don't mind spending the money, an unlocked version of the phone offered right now by Newegg will let you use the pipelines belonging to the two GSM mobile operators (although AT&T users will have 3G only). The unit, available from the retailer for $649.99, has quad-band GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900) and quad-band UMTS (850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100) connectivity. And for those Canadians who don't want to buy the phone from Virgin Mobile or Bell, Newegg Canada is offering an unlocked model for the same price.
Besides having to pay an unsubsidized price fo...

AT&T ramps up voicemail security, say hello to your new pin code

AT&T ramps up voicemail security, say hello to your new pin code

Posted on Aug 08, 2011 by MG1

Have anything sitting in your voicemail that you'd prefer the rest of the world didn't hear? When's the last time you went about checking it, anyway? AT&T is now on a mission to save its carefree customers from themselves, and beginning today, all new subscribers will be required to set a voicemail password or affirmatively disable the security measure. Ma Bell's new policy is a reaction to the current unauthorized intrusion hubbub in the media, combined with the very real threat of caller ID spoofing. Shockingly, its current customers won't receive similar treatment until early next year, and only when they upgrade their handsets. Of course, you can easily secure your voicemail within the s...

AT&T To Shove Jailbroken Hotspots Users On To Tiered Data Plan

AT&T To Shove Jailbroken Hotspots Users On To Tiered Data Plan

Posted on Aug 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

It looks like AT&T has decided to take the kid gloves off when it comes to their problem unauthorized hotspot users. Many of the users who get the most mileage out of jailbreak-only apps like MyWi are still rocking AT&T’s grandfathered unlimited data plan, but that won’t be the case going forward.
Rather than just sending out thinly-veiled notices by text message to offending users, they’ve decided to simply kick those customers off the unlimited plan and onto the appropriate tiered plan.
We’re waiting for the official word from AT&T, but according to 9to5Mac, all those who received an email or text notification alluding to their unkosher data use will be forcibly removed from the unlimited ...

AT&T to launch BlackBerry Torch 9810 this month, Torch 9860 and Bold 9900 later this year

AT&T to launch BlackBerry Torch 9810 this month, Torch 9860 and Bold 9900 later this year

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Research in Motion has had better days -- and years, for that matter -- but it's always had a loyal partner in AT&T, a company that's cranked out BlackBerry products faithfully for the past twelve years. The tradition continues, as the GSM giant has announced its intentions to bring the 4G BlackBerry Torch 9810 (aka the Torch 2) to stores sometime this month, followed by the 4G BlackBerry Torch 9860 and 4G Bold 9900 "later this year." No specific dates or prices were given on any of the devices.
The Torch 9810 comes with a 1.2GHz CPU, 3.2-inch touch display, a total of 8GB internal memory (with microSD expansion up to 32GB), and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture. Oh, and about ...

AT&T to throttle smartphone data starting October 1st

AT&T to throttle smartphone data starting October 1st

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesAT&T

AT&T said on Friday that it will begin throttling unlimited smartphone data plans as of October 1st. “Like other wireless companies, we’re taking steps to manage exploding demand for mobile data,” AT&T said Friday in a statement. The carrier continued, “One new measure is a step that may reduce the data throughput speed experienced by a very small minority of smartphone customers who are on unlimited plans – those whose extraordinary level of data usage puts them in the top 5 percent of our heaviest data users in a billing period. In fact, these customers on average use 12 times more data than the average of all other smartphone data customers.” AT&T was very careful to mention, repeatedly, ...

AT&T may start throttling data speeds in October

AT&T may start throttling data speeds in October

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

AT&T will begin to throttle data speeds during the first week of October, 9to5 Mac reported on Thursday. The carrier could move to throttle the data speeds of its biggest data users in an effort to ensure network stability for its first LTE devices, which are expected to launch later this year. It remains unclear how low AT&T will knock the throughput down to, but 9to5 Mac says Virgin currently forces data hogs down to 256Kbps until the next billing cycle after they use more than 2.5GB. T-Mobile also throttles its data speeds after users go over their monthly 5GB “unlimited” cap. The move should actually be beneficial for most AT&T customers looking for stable performance and will only affec...

T-Mobile responds to Sen. Al Franken's recommendation against AT&T merger

T-Mobile responds to Sen. Al Franken's recommendation against AT&T merger

Posted on Jul 28, 2011 by MG1

Minnesota Senator Al Franken sent a letter to the heads of the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice earlier this week, stating that AT&T’s proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA was not in the best interest of the American public. “The competitive effects of a merger of this size and scope will reverberate throughout the telecommunications sector for decades to come and will affect consumer prices, customer service, innovation, competition in handsets and the quality and quantity of network coverage. These threats are too large and too irrevocable to be prevented or alleviated by conditions,” Franken wrote. The Minnesota democrat also said that the deal c...

AT&T Google Nexus S on sale today, exclusive to Best Buy

AT&T Google Nexus S on sale today, exclusive to Best Buy

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

If you shelled out 600 clams for an unlocked Nexus S, buyer's remorse starts now: the subsidized AT&T version is out today. Available exclusively from Best Buy (and exclusively in black), the AT&T Nexus S will set you back only a paltry $99 with a two-year contract. Is the loss of color choice (and that whole "SIM-locked to AT&T" thing) worth the savings? We'll leave that up to you and your (Google) wallet.

LG Thrill 4G for AT&T priced at $99 on a new two-year contract

LG Thrill 4G for AT&T priced at $99 on a new two-year contract

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

While it’s not as cheap as we previously thought, it looks like the US version of the LG Optimus 3D, the Thrill 4G, will land on AT&Tshelves for only $99 on a new two-year contract. This almost doesn’t need to be said but we can imagine that a dual-core toting, glasses-free 3D display-rocking handset for $99 should sell like hotcakes.
The LG Thrill 4G would be the first handset of its caliber to land at such a price in the US, third-party retailers notwithstanding. When the handset is released, we can imagine that some of those retailers will be offering up the handset at an even lower price. Say, $50, if not free.
On AT&T’s website, you can now grab the Motorola Atrix 4G for only $99 and wh...

AT&T prepping mid-September iPhone 5 launch?

AT&T prepping mid-September iPhone 5 launch?

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

We all know that an iPhone 5 will be coming sooner or later but the latest rumor from BGR suggests that AT&T is preparing for a launch of the next-generation Apple phone in the middle of September.
There’s no specific source named other than it’s a “proven source,” but the timing does seem to make a bit of sense. In previous years, Apple would release an update to its iPhone in the middle of summer but it held off on that this year. The decision seems to have worked, as Apple was able to sell a record amount of iPhones last quarter even without a refresh.
The company generally has an iPod-focused event in September and it would be quite easy for it to transition this to its Fall iPhone event...

Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

If Samsung’s Android lineup is feeling a little sparse on AT&T, don’t worry… there’s about to be a new flagship in town. We have just exclusively received a photo of an unnamed Samsung device complete with sliding QWERTY keyboard that’s headed to AT&T in the coming months. While we don’t have much to go on, the device will sport the four-button Android layout as opposed to Samsung’s typical three-button layout at AT&T’s request, and the QWERTY keyboard even reflects that.

Customers sue AT&T to block T-Mobile acquisition

Customers sue AT&T to block T-Mobile acquisition

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

A handful of AT&T’s customers are now fighting against its planned acquisition of T-Mobile. Law firm Bursor & Fisher filed lawsuits against AT&T on behalf of 11 AT&T subscribers in an effort to block the merger, AllThingsD reported on Friday. The lawyers have created a pitch site titled FightTheMerger.com and argue that The Clayton Antitrust Act gives “anyone who may be affected by a proposed merger” the power to sue in a federal court. “Government enforcement is an important part of the antitrust laws, but the Clayton Act also permits private parties who may be adversely affected to challenge a proposed merger,” one of the lawyers, Scott Bursor, said. “That means any AT&T cellphone, data or...

Smartphone sales drive AT&T's profits, shape future usage

Smartphone sales drive AT&T's profits, shape future usage

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesAT&T

AT&T reported another strong quarter, strongly backed by smartphone sales. The iPhone continued to dominate the carrier's lineup occupying over 60% of smartphone sales, while Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone accounted for the other 40%. But what's interesting is that these devices are in the core of shaping AT&T's future.
The carrier has estimated that nearly half of its subscribers have smartphones, a trend which is set to continue. In the second quarter alone, monthly data plan activations more than doubled among users when compared to the same period last year. Why is this important? First of all, a monthly data plan adds revenue, but it also forms the habit of consuming more and mo...
