AT&T CEO: 'We'll do very well' with iPhone 5 even when Sprint gets it

Speaking during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference on Thursday, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said he was confident that his company “would do very well” when it offers the iPhone 5, despite the influx of competition that is expected if Sprint introduces the phone. Sprint could be in contention for data-hogging customers if it does indeed offer unlimited data with the iPhone 5 and recent rumors have suggested it will.

Verizon backs AT&T in T-Mobile merger
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon WirelessT-MobileAT&T
Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam has spoken out in favor of the AT&T/T-Mobile merger, describing the deal as “kind of like gravity” and arguing that, if it blocks it, the US government will need to be more active in its spectrum plans. Speaking at an investor conference this week, McAdam claimed “that match had to occur” MarketWatch reports, and warned that the involved parties “need to be very thoughtful on what the impacts would be to the overall industry if this is a way to regulate the industry without actually passing regulation.”
“I have taken the position that the AT&T merger with T-Mobile was kind of like gravity. It had to occur, because you had a company with a T-Mobile that had the spect...

AT&T launches new global messaging plans, lets you comfortably roam
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAT&T
The largest GSM carrier in the country is popular amongst travelers because you can use nearly all of its phones anywhere in the world. Messaging whilst abroad, however, has always been an expensive headache since the best option on AT&T was a bundle of 50 SMS / MMS messages for $10. That's a quaint number, to say the least, considering many of us can burn through that many messages in an hour. Beginning today, two more options are available for the more text-savvy roamers: you can get a package of 200 for $30, or 500 for $50. This number only reflects the number of messages you send, which means those received are counted against your US bucket of texts (if you're on a pay-per-use messaging...

AT&T May Sell Off Assets to Seal T-Mobile Deal
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
Reports today are indicating that AT&T really doesn’t want its acquisition of T-Mobile to fall through, and is going so far as to consider a large asset sale to seal the deal with regulators. Ma Bell is quietly chatting up smaller competitors like MetroPCS and Leap Wireless to sell spectrum and subscribers, according to sources.
The deal to buy T-Mobile hit a snag recently when the US Justice Department filed suit to stop it. The FCC, and several states have also called foul on the buyout, saying that it will hurt competition and negatively affect users. By selling off assets, AT&T hopes to convince regulators that that will not be the case.
If AT&T cannot close the deal, they will have to p...

AT&T to launch its LTE network Sunday in 5 markets
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
This Sunday, AT&T will launch its 4G LTE network in 5 markets. The lucky cities are Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. This information came directly from the carrier's CFO, John Stephens, in a media appearance. Another 10 markets will be up and running by the end of the year which will be a total of 15 markets covered by the service by the start of the new year. That works out to about 70 million people that will be able to use AT&T's LTE pipeline by the end of 2011.
AT&T started selling two LTE devices last month, a 4G USB modem and a mobile hotspot, both of which are manufactured by Sierra Wireless. The two are priced at $49.99 and $69.99 respectively, after a signed 2-yea...

AT&T announces Windows Phone Mango lineup coming this fall, existing devices to be updated
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftAT&TWindows Phone 7.5
In the first of what we expect to be many announcements related to Windows Phone Mango devices, AT&T stepped up to the plate this morning by unveiling three new "4G" handsets that use the latest version of Microsoft's OS: the HTC Titan, Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash. We already know quite a bit about the Titan, but details on Sammy's selections are slim for now -- images aren't even available for either phone, though it's likely we've seen at least one of them before. In addition, the carrier's also planning to update its entire existing lineup with Windows Phone 7.5.
As for the fall lineup, there doesn't seem to be a slacker in the bunch. The Focus S will have a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus...

Samsung Focus Flash announced by AT&T, runs Mango and flies on 4G airwaves
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungMicrosoftAT&TWindows Phone 7.5Focus Flash
The Samsung Focus Flash was among the trio of Windows Phone handsets that AT&T officially announced today, the other two being the Samsung Focus S and the HTC TITAN. It may be touted as the most affordable one out of the three, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it will not have much to offer for its money.
Under its hood will tick a 1.4GHz processor, and a 5-megapixel camera will be gracing its back. Its front will be occupied by a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display, and a front-facing camera will be also in stock.
On the software side, the Samsung Focus Flash will run Windows Phone Mango, just like its bigger siblings. Furthermore, all Windows Phone handsets in AT&T's lineup are expected to...

AT&T/T-Mobile merger could put Sprint out of business
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
Chitika Insights, Chitika’s research arm, recently proposed the question “What if AT&T and T-Mobile actually merge?” and created a graph of what the wireless landscape in the United States might look like if AT&T’s proposed $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile USA is passed. Chitika concluded there could be calamitous consequences for Sprint and various regional carriers such as Boost and MetroPCS. If the merger is approved, AT&T and T-Mobile will have more than 130 million subscribers and 51% of the U.S. wireless market based on usage, Chitika’s data suggests. “[The] projection shows the immediate impact of the merger, so the smaller network’s share looks unscathed,” the company wrote its blog....

Lawmakers Want to Know Why DoJ Objected to AT&T/T-Mobile Deal
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
Republicans from the House Energy and Commerce Committee have submitted a letter to the Federal Communications Commission asking why the agency, along with the Department fo Justice, is frowning on AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile. "It is clear that this is a complex transaction and it is important that government officials reserve judgment until all of the facts have come to light," the letter said. The lawmakers have asked for a bipartisan meeting to be held within two weeks to discuss the acquisition. Specifically, they want to know why the DoJ and FCC doubt the merger's benefits and whether the agencies considered the impact on jobs and economic growth. The DoJ sued to block the m...

Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play 4G hitting AT&T on September 18th for $50 on contract
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony EricssonAT&TXperia PLAY 4G
We knew good and well it was coming, and come it has. Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play has made the natural GSM shift in the States in order to grace Ma Bell's airwaves, and despite the "4G" naming convention, this fellow will be topping out at HSPA+. In other words, LTE lovers will need to look elsewhere. This marks the first launch of a PlayStation-certified smartphone for AT&T, and given that it's been around the block a time or two, the carrier is (smartly) pricing it at just $49.99 on a two-year contract -- a buck-fifty less than what it launched for on Verizon Wireless. As we'd heard, it'll ship with Android 2.3.3, a 1GHz CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, a 4-inch display (854 x 480) and will arrive in ...

HTC Holiday running on AT&T's 4G LTE network photographed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCAT&THoliday
BGR has obtained photographs of the still-unannounced HTC Holiday Android phone, which may be AT&T’s first 4G LTE-enabled smartphone. We were also shown the results of LTE speed tests taken on the HTC Holiday in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas, and from what we saw, they topped out at an incomprehensible 29Mbps — far faster than the fastest speeds we have seen on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Of course AT&T’s 4G LTE network is basically empty right now since it hasn’t yet officially launched, but we definitely like what we’re seeing so far. As far as the HTC Holiday hardware goes, previously reported spec highlights include Android 2.3.4, a 4.5-inch qHD display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 8...

Sprint sues to block AT&T purchase of T-Mobile
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
Following in the footsteps of the Department of Justice, Sprint has announced its lawsuit to block the proposed purchase of T-Mobile by rival AT&T.
Sprint, a longtime opponent of the buyout, and one of the most vocal against it, takes the position that the purchase of T-Mobile by AT&T would be bad for the consumer and detrimental to the wireless market in the U.S. Sprint points out in its lawsuit that the acquisition would harm both retail consumer and corporate customers by stifling innovation and causing higher prices. It continues to state that the purchase would "entrench the duopoly control of AT&T and Verizon," and therefore concentrate more than three-fourths of the market and 90 perc...
