C'mon, admit it -- you didn't really think the LG Thrill 4G would ever be released, did you? After several weeks of unexplained delays, the AT&T-branded Optimus 3D is truly, honestly available on the carrier's website for sale at a respectable $100. The device, announced at CTIA 2011 in March, isn't hiding anything we didn't already know: it's got a 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4 CPU with 512MB of RAM, Froyo, a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 display, 1080p video capture and dual 5MP rear stereoscopic cameras to add the extra dimension. So if you've been waiting for this phone to get the green light, it's time to stop idling at the intersection.

'AT&T is certain to lose' lawsuit with DOJ, former FCC chairman says

Former FCC chairman Reed Hundt voiced his opinion on the Department of Justice’s decision to sue AT&T in an effort to block its planned $39 billion merger with T-Mobile USA. “AT&T is certain to lose,” Hundt told SNL. “They can litigate the case to death,” he said noting that the acquisition was anti-competitive. “It’s an extremely easy case. The Department of Justice will win the case in court. No question about it.” According to SNL, AT&T believed federal regulators would consider the acquisition based on a market-to-market analysis, rather than nationwide analysis. Hundt said the DOJ will instead determine whether the deal is anti-competitive or not based on both national and market-by-mar...

AT&T May Offer to Sell 25% of T-Mobile to Push Deal Through

According to sources cited by Reuters, AT&T is preparing a two-stage plan in order to convince the government to allow its proposed acquisition of T-Mobile to proceed. First, AT&T is prepared to make guarantees that it won't raise the prices of T-Mobile's current voice/data services. One of the government's fears is that the acquisition would lead to more expensive services. Second, AT&T is said to be considering an asset sale of up to 25% of T-Mobile's spectrum and customer base. One of the major concerns voiced by the Justice Department is that the acquisition would lead to less market competition. It recently revealed that AT&T would control more than 50% of 17 different markets across th...

AT&T sent text messages to its customers on Thursday offering 1,000 free rollover minutes. The message specifically said: “There’s no cost or obligation to you. It’s our way of saying thank you. To have your minutes added, reply “YES,” by 9/7/2011.” We received the SMS on an iPhone in the office and confirmed that we did indeed receive 1,000 free rollover minutes. An AT&T spokesperson did not immediately responded to a request for further details on why AT&T issued the offer.

While IFA is heating up in Europe, huge news is happening stateside as the US Department of Justice has filed to block AT&T’s planned $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile over anti-competitive concerns, according to reports appearing almost simultaneously on Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
The DOJ has grounded its filing by saying that “AT&T’s elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low-priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market.” In an official statement on its website, the department clarified that the deal would result in "in higher prices, poorer quality services, fewer choices and fewer innovative products." It also explained that AT&T wa...

AT&T, who was recently identified as the worst wireless operator in the United States by J.D. Power, hasn’t officially yet turned on their 4G LTE network, but that hasn’t stopped two technology journalists from discovering that Chicago residents, using the 4G LTE enabled AT&T Elevate WiFi hotspot, can hop on this as yet to be launched network and run some speed tests. The first set of results, from The Boy Genius Report, have download speeds topping out at around 13 Mbps and upload speeds getting close to 2 Mbps. The second set of results, from This is my next, are a bit slower, coming in at 6 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up. To give you some comparison, using the T-Mobile Rocket 3.0, which is capab...

Is this AT&T's first 4G LTE handset, the Samsung Impulse 4G?

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

We have received photos from a trusted source that show what could be AT&T’s first LTE smartphone, the Samsung Impulse 4G. We don’t have too many details to go on beyond the photo you see above along with an image of a case accessory that maps out the back of the device, but the Impulse 4G does look awfully like the Samsung DROID Charge, and this might be AT&T’s equivalent. Again, no firm release date on this one, but we definitely like where this is going. Full-sized images are in the gallery linked below.

Verizon Commands Android Market, AT&T Slowly Gaining

Posted on Aug 18, 2011 by MG3

Verizon still commands a huge chunk of the Android market share in the U.S., but it showed some slow decline over the past few months while AT&T picked up a few percentage points. Chitika, the online advertising network, has always been in a unique position to dish out figures like these because of its presence on mobile-optimized websites. It’s not a completely accurate representation of the market, but it’s generally close enough.

Speaking at a tech conference today, AT&T's senior vice president of mobility and consumer markets, Peter Ritcher, said that the company won't have a Long Term Evolution smartphone ready until late in 2011. The company's LTE network is still on track to launch in five markets this summer (Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio), but the first devices able to access the LTE network will be a laptop dongle and mobile hotspot. When Verizon Wireless launched its LTE network in December 2010, it also only provided laptop dongles for access.

FCC halts AT&T's acquisition of Qualcomm spectrum, bundles it with T-Mobile merger review

FCC halts AT&T's acquisition of Qualcomm spectrum, bundles it with T-Mobile merger review

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

AT&T's LTE spectrum acquisitions just hit a minor bump in the federal road. In a recently released FCC statement, Wireless Bureau chief Rick Kaplan announced the decision to stop the 180 day review clock on the telco's proposed takeover of Qualcomm's 700MHz spectrum. The $1.9 billion deal, inked last December, isn't getting the regulatory axe, but due to a "number of related issues" concerning spectrum overlap with the still unapproved T-Mobile merger, the commission is bundling the two into one future review. Maybe it's time the carrier's industry backers pen another letter of support to Chairman Genachowski.
