Apple begins selling refurbished iPad 2s
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 2
Apple has for the first time begun selling refurbished iPad 2s through its online store. Selection is currently limited to 32 or 64GB capacities, and predominantly 3G models, equipped for either AT&T or Verizon. The two exceptions are 64GB Wi-Fi tablets in either black or white.
The Wi-Fi options are in fact the cheapest amongst the refurbs, costing $649 each. 32GB 3G tablets are $679, and pricing shoots up to $779 for 64GB 3G. The costs are nevertheless better than the respective $699, $729 and $829 Apple charges for new hardware. Refurbished iPads are used products, but include new batteries and outer shells, as well as one-year warranties.

Toshiba Thrive to land in UK September 1st, now known as the AT100
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsToshibaTHRiVE
If you're a loyal citizen of the UK anxiously awaiting a Toshiba Thrive, your sleepless nights are nearly over. The less-than-slender tablet, rebranded as the AT100, will hit the United Kingdom on September 1st. Like its American cousin, it will ship with Android 3.1 and a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor -- not to mention all those ports: full-size HDMI and USB, along with an SD slot. Of course, with those rumors of a thinner Toshiba tablet swirling around, you may want to hold off on buying. There's no official word on pricing yet, though you won't have to wait long to find out.

10.1-inch HTC Jetstream hitting AT&T: HTC’s first Honeycomb tablet comes with LTE
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHTCJetstream
The HTC Jetstream, previously referred to as the HTC Puccini, is not only HTC’s first 10.1-inch tablet, but also the company’s first to run on Android 3.1 Honeycomb, tailor-made for tablets. Add to that support for both HSPA+ and LTE, and the company’s capacitive stylus, the HTC Scribe, and you have a pretty powerful combination.
The inclusion of LTE makes it the first AT&T tablet supporting the technology. It won't be particularly useful now as AT&T hasn't yet commercially rolled out its LTE network, but it makes the device future proof. The price however is set accordingly - the tablet could be yours for a hefty $699 and that's after you sign a 2-year contract. The HTC Jetstream release d...

HP may resurrect TouchPad, head of PC business says
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
On August 18th, HP announced that it was killing off its webOS devices business and considering a possible spin-off of its personal systems group (PSG). The head of HP’s PC business, executive vice president Todd Bradley, discussed the TouchPad and his company’s PC business with Reuters, explaining that a spin-off could be the “best value” for HP’s investors instead of an outright sale to competitors such as Acer or Lenovo. “Regardless of what happens, we’re the largest PC company in the world,” Bradley explained. “We need everybody energized, and while this isn’t business as usual, we need people to go out and sell products every day,” he said, noting that HP will still remain a major custo...

HP TouchPad component suppliers may be now sitting on huge pile of unused tablet parts
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
As every gadget aficionado is already well aware of, HP pulled the plug on its webOS-powered hardware leaving mountains of unsold devices collecting dust in retailers' warehouses, as well as in its own. In order to move all that inventory, the manufacturer decided to sell the HP TouchPad and Pre3 at dirt cheap prices hoping to get back at least some of its investment. However, besides recovering from its loss, there seems to be yet another issue that HP is now obliged to take care of.
According to a report by DigiTimes, HP's hardware component suppliers are now sitting on a huge pile of leftover parts, most of which were meant to be used in the 7-inch HP TouchPad Go tablet. Specific numbers ...

HP TouchPad to receive another OTA update, claims HP
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
Responding to a query by CNET, HP said that HP TouchPad owners can look forward to an over-the-air update that will improve the current state of the webOS-powered tablet. "We expect that HP TouchPad owners can look forward to an over-the-air update that will enhance the platform and add functionality and a growing applications catalog." The company provided no time frame as to when consumers might expect such an update.
While sales of the first webOS tablet were very weak initially, HP's decision to kill the platform and offer the tablet at massively reduced prices initiated a a sales frenzy, the likes of which are typically reserved for Apple products. This suggests that there is certainly ...

Acer chairman JT Wang says tablet fever is cooling
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAcer
The sales of tablets are still growing rapidly on the computer market today. Tablets are taking a big chunk of buyers that would otherwise go to notebooks leaving companies with margins that don’t look good in the wake of sales decreases. Acer announced a quarterly loss for Q2 and the loss was blamed on the success of the iPad. Despite the Acer loss being laid at the feet of a tablet, Acer’s chairman JT Wang says that tablet fever is already cooling.
I think that is wishful thinking on Wang’s part at this point. The sales of Acer and other brands of tablets may be cooling, but the iPad has shown little signs of letting up. Wang also thinks that consumers will be wooed back to notebooks with ...

Quickoffice update brings document editing to the TouchPad
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
Well, we knew it was coming, and folks, it's finally here -- the promised update to Quickoffice HD that brings document editing to HP's webOS slate. Available gratis for TouchPad owners, the overhaul enables text formatting in Word docs, in addition to enabling cell and function editing in Excel spreadsheets. Unfortunately, editing of Powerpoint presentations is sorely lacking, but that's nothing another update can't cure, right?

Is Amazon Apple's biggest threat in tablets?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleAmazon
It’s almost guaranteed that Amazon will release a tablet or two to go against the iPad and many analysts believe that Amazon has the best shot at dethroning Apple in this market for multiple reasons. Let’s take a look at how likely it is for Amazon to succeed in the tablet space.
Of course, this is going to be somewhat speculative because the products haven’t even been announced. Rumors suggest that Amazon will release a pair of Android-based tablets by the holiday season which are powered by NVIDIA chips and will have deep hooks into Amazon services. Let’s use that as the jumping off point.
The case for
Amazon has quietly become a high-tech sleeping giant over the last few years. While its ...

Samsung delays Galaxy Tab 10.1 launch in Australia amid patent battle with Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGALAXY Tab 10.1
Just a few days after suffering a legal setback in Dutch court, Samsung has now decided to delay the launch of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia, amid its heightening patent infringement battle with Apple. In a hearing today, the Korean manufacturer announced that it would refrain from selling or marketing its new tablet within Australia, before September 30th. Samsung made a similar concession earlier this month, agreeing to halt sales of its slates until today's hearing and to provide Apple with product samples at least seven days prior to its Australian launch. The company says it presented the samples on Thursday, but Cupertino's lawyers insisted that the Australian version of the Galaxy ...

Details of Toshiba’s successor to the Thrive Android tablet have leaked, with the company apparently readying a far slimmer, sleeker Honeycomb slate that might be released at IFA 2011 later this week. The unnamed Toshiba tablet is, according to Notebook Italia, predominantly metal and glass, unlike the rubberized Thrive, with a 10.1-inch display and microHDMI connectivity.

HP TouchPad treated to CyanogenMod-flavored Gingerbread
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
With $99 firesales sweeping HP TouchPad inventories across the country, we can only envy you if you managed to snatch yours. There’s a tiny little issue with the tablet, though, it’s running webOS and the future of webOS is uncertain at best. But what if it could run Android? We weren’t the first to think of this - actually, we already reported about the first case of porting Google’s OS to the probably most affordable tablet out there.
But while we’ve already seen a somewhat limited version of Froyo on the TouchPad, now it seems that the CyanogenMod team is closer to porting a rough version of CyanogenMod 7 on Gingerbread 2.3.5 to the 9.7-inch slate.
