Kindle Fire offers 'disappointingly poor' user experience, UI expert says

Kindle Fire offers 'disappointingly poor' user experience, UI expert says

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

User interface expert Dr. Jakob Nielsen, who describes himself as an author, researcher and consultant on user interfaces, recently studied the user experience of the Kindle Fire and dubbed it “disappointingly poor.” Nielsen said the lack of physical buttons impeded the reading experience, the device was too heavy and was “unpleasant to hold for long periods of time,” and while there was potential for a good magazine reading experience, Nielsen said the result was “miserable.” Nielsen even proposes a bit of a conspiracy theory to why the web browsing experience on the Kindle Fire might be inferior to other devices. “If I were given to conspiracy theories, I’d say that Amazon deliberately des...

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, Android Market is a go

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, Android Market is a go

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

After a brief lead-up period, the Dingleberry jailbreak for the BlackBerry PlayBook is now publicly available, though still in a very early beta. The exploit used to gain root access is actually pretty simple. PlayBook backup files used in the BlackBerry Desktop Software apparently aren’t signed, which means those files can be used to launch just about whatever you want on the device. So what can you do with it? Well, not too much yet, and the three guys behind Dingleberry are hoping that the developer community at large will run with this and do all sorts of neat stuff, but for now one of the devs have posted instructions on how to get the Android Market up and running on the PlayBook.

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Last week we posted some videos of a rooted BlackBerry PlayBook from the collaborative minds of Neuralic, Xpvqus, and Cmwdotme a.k.a. Chris Wade. Now, the development team behind the jailbreak tool, Dingleberry, have officially released the beta version on their project website.
As we previously reported, the trio states that the a Dingleberried PlayBook is able to stream content from Hulu and a Dingleberried Playbook running the 2.0 beta can run the Android Market and install APK files without having to convert them into BAR files.
RIM has already proclaimed that they would release a patch for the PlayBook as soon as a jailbreak was released. As expected, the developers responded by saying ...

Now you can install the Android Market on your rooted Kindle Fire

Now you can install the Android Market on your rooted Kindle Fire

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Hackers have been making steady progress on the Kindle Fire, but a fairly important milestone was reached yesterday – rooted users can install the Android Market, providing access to all of the Android apps they already purchased through the official market. Prior to this, users had to choose between repurchasing the apps from Amazon’s market or installing a custom ROM.
Amazon may not be thrilled – they are selling each Fire at a loss and hope to make their profit from selling users content. This is a victory for consumers, however, who will most likely still want to use Amazon’s services, but not be forced to double-dip on apps they already paid money for.
The method involves connecting you...

Honeycomb update for the HTC Flyer is reportedly starting to roll out across Europe

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHTCFlyer

Even though we weren’t terribly saddened to find the HTC Flyer packing Android 2.3 Gingerbread as opposed to Honeycomb out of the box, seeing that HTC Sense for tablets offers a reasonable customized experience, those clamoring to see the tablet-optimized OS will surely take a liking to the reported news we’re hearing today.
From the sound of it all, it seems as though the long awaited Honeycomb software update for the 7-inchh tablet is starting to roll out – in Europe so far. Specifically, HTC Flyer users in France and Holland report that they’re started receiving the anticipated update that brings the device to software version 3.55.405.1. Rolling it out via an over-the-air process, which ...

Dell Streak 7 Android tablet discontinued

Dell Streak 7 Android tablet discontinued

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Like the Streak 5 before it, Dell has discontinued the Streak 7 tablet from its online store. The T-Mobile variant was similarly removed from the carrier's store earlier this year after being ignominiously denied a Honeycomb update, with a tiny moment back in the spotlight during T-Mobile's "Magenta Saturday sale."
Dell's site simply says that "Steak 7 is no longer available online, but you can browse our other mobile devices for similar products." The company's mobile products selection is actually looking pretty thin these days, with the Inspiron Duo holding down tablet duties and the Venue and Venue Pro smartphones still available. That leaves a pretty large hole for an Android tablet to ...

RIM takes $485 million hit on the PlayBook in Q3

RIM takes $485 million hit on the PlayBook in Q3

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Just how much is the PlayBook costing RIM? The BlackBerry-maker revealed that it will be taking a $485 million hit in the third fiscal quarter, thanks to the QNX-packing tablet. The charge reflects flagging sales on the PlayBook, which moved some 500,000 units in its first quarter, followed by 250,000 and 150,000 in the following two. In spite of such numbers, the Canadian smartphone manufacturer remains committed to the tablet, which has seen some healthy price drops in recent weeks, in hopes of staying competitive amongst new crop of budget tablets.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Delayed in Australia (Again)

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Delayed in Australia (Again)

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Samsung was dealt another setback this week in its bid to sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia when a court again delayed its release in the country so Apple could file an appeal.
Earlier this week, the full Federal Court of Australia overturned an earlier ruling that banned the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the region. The device was temporarily banned due to a patent dispute with Apple.
As reported by Reuters, that ban was scheduled to be lifted at 4pm GMT on Friday, but the court today extended it to Dec. 9 so Apple can file its objections.
In its ruling earlier this week, the full court found that Justice Annabelle Bennett did not adequately assess the strength of Apple's patent claims when she al...

In The US, Xoom 2 Will Be Droid Xyboard

In The US, Xoom 2 Will Be Droid Xyboard

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Motorola is planning to nix the "Xoom" name for its next ambitious Android tablet project.
The company's newest Verizon-powered 4G LTE tablet will not be called the Xoom 2 as had been expected. Instead, the company came up with the name "Droid XyBoard."
There are a couple reasons why the name change makes sense. First of all, the Xoom hasn't made nearly the kind of splash Motorola and Verizon were expecting. Instead, it has just sort of fallen into the generic group of Android tablets.
Second, if there's one name in the Android universe that almost everyone knows, it's "Droid." We were frankly quite surprised when the original Xoom was announced and did not carry the Droid moniker, which is ...

Motorola Xoom update brings pay-as-you-go 4G LTE

Motorola Xoom update brings pay-as-you-go 4G LTE

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

The Motorola Xoom on Verizon should be receiving a minor update which will be bringing a pay-as-you-go option for 4G LTE data.
According to CNET, the HLK75F update will give you a month-to-month option for 4G LTE data and I think this makes the Xoom much more appealing. While it’s a big old and still larger than the competition, having 4G LTE to use without having to sign a long-term contract is really cool. I could see multiple scenarios where I’d want mobile data on my tablet on a pay-as-you-go basis and this is how it works on rival Apple’s iPad.

Acer announces Iconia Tab A200 packing Tegra 2 CPU, Ice Cream Sandwich on the way

Posted on Dec 02, 2011 by MG15

We've already seen it pass through the FCC and pop-up in a family-friendly video, but today, Acer's Iconia Tab A200 has finally received official status, courtesy of an announcement obtained by Netbook News. Powered by NVIDIA's 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, the company's latest Android slate comes with 1GB of RAM and boasts a "generous" 10.1-inch display, with 1280 x 800 resolution. Available in either Titanium Gray or Metallic Red, the slate also features a two megapixel front facing camera and, as we observed earlier, comes packed with Acer Ring -- a multitasking manager that provides shortcuts to Google Maps, screenshot functions and other apps. Acer says it began shipping Honeycomb-laced model...

Australian court extends Samsung Galaxy Tab ban

Australian court extends Samsung Galaxy Tab ban

Posted on Dec 02, 2011 by MG15

Samsung was dealt another setback in its attempt to sell the Galaxy Tab in Australia. Instead of launching the Galaxy Tab Friday at 4 pm, the Korean company must now wait until December 9th. It’s a significant setback that’ll cost Samsung a week’s worth of holiday sales.
Earlier this week, the Australian Supreme Court overturned the injunction that banned sales of the tablet device. Apple appealed this decision and, just as Samsung was ready to kick off sales, the Cupertino company was granted a week long extension to argue its case. This delays the Galaxy Tab’s launch by yet another week and leaves Samsung and its customers in the lurch.

Amazon is now updating the Kindle Fire with required software updates that updates the device's software to version 6.2. While Amazon kept quiet about exactly what the update included, the software removes the ability to break the root file, AndroidPolice reported. The software also makes the Kindle Fire update automatically over Wi-Fi in the future, without giving users a clear way of opting out.

Acer is all set to unleash an Nvidia Tegra 3 powered tablet in 2012, with the company's president Jim Wong confirming to T3 that the quad-core device rumours are true.
Recently, the Acer Iconia Tab A200 got leaky on the web, although it's thought that this particular tab will be rocking Tegra 2 rather than the newer quad-core Tegra 3 chipset.
Whatever the name though, it's definitely coming, with the Acer bossman saying: "You may have seen some leaked stories in the media relating to Acer launching a new quad-core tablet and I can confirm these stories are true.
