Toshiba's Thrive 7-inch tablet goes on sale today for $379.99

Toshiba's Thrive 7-inch tablet goes on sale today for $379.99

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Toshiba promised two things when it announced its Thrive 7-inch tablet in September: an early December arrival and a less-than-$400 price. And today it's delivering on both of those. The 16GB, Android 3.2, Tegra 2-powered tablet should be popping up in stores today for $379.99. The 32GB version will be selling for $429.99. For those that want a refresher, the tablet is a lot like the orginal Thrive in terms of design (it even has a 1280 x 800 resolution 7-inch display), though we're hopeful the charging issues and poor battery life have been excised. Our review unit just arrived, so you may just want to hold tight for that before you start pull out the plastic, but if you simply can't wait t...

The rumors about the next-generation iPad are coming quickly. Another source is claiming that the new iPad 3 will land in the next 3-4 months. We heard a very similar rumor early in December that the iPad 3 was due to launch in February. That is a bit sooner than the latest rumor claims. According to the latest rumor, the makers of components for the iPad 3 have started to ship the parts to OEM contractors for assembly.
At the same time, the production and shipment of parts for the current generation tablets have been reduced according to the sources. Production of the iPad 2 is continuing at a brisk pace with 14-15 million units of the iPad 2 expected to be produced in Q4. The production wi...

Update coming in less than two weeks for Amazon Kindle Fire

Update coming in less than two weeks for Amazon Kindle Fire

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Sure, the Amazon Kindle Fire has been selling like the plate of proverbial hotcakes and is expected to be the top selling non-Apple tablet this quarter. But the growing legion of buyers is turning into a growing number of complaints with users upset with laggy touch-screen responsiveness and poor performance of the tablet in general. There is also no privacy to users of the tablet who can easily see what prior users were up to on the device. As a result, Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener promised the New York Times that an update to repair many of the problems would be sent out within two weeks. Amazon had already updated the tablet to software version 6.2 last month. Additionally, a usability ...

Google enhances Image Search for tablet users

Google enhances Image Search for tablet users

Google is at it again, enhancing the user experience of Image Search for owners of iPads and Android tablets. The new features mostly center on touch-based interaction. Users only need to touch a thumbnail to see a full-sized image, and swiping left or right takes you to the subsequent images. Information on the full-sized image is now displayed in a more tablet-friendly format as well.
These updates build on other tablet-centric features introduced this summer, when Google increased the size of image previews, introduced continuous-scrolling thumbnails, and more rapid loading of thumbnails (which we imagine was needed to make continuous-scrolling a practical reality).

Sony Ericsson and Motorola Detail Android 4.0 Upgrade Path

Sony Ericsson and Motorola Detail Android 4.0 Upgrade Path

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG15

We've talked in the past about how OEMs take the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and use it to build software tailored for devices in the context of x86 optimizations, and today two partners are sharing some more details about their specific timelines for Android 4.0 releases. Those two are Sony Ericsson and Motorola, who have outlined in their respective blog posts the path from code to getting a fully baked ROM pushed out over the air to handsets.

The two posts describe the process as we've understood it for a while now, and with Android 4.0 things don't seem any different. Google works with a specific OEM and SoC vendor around some chosen reference hardware (in this case Galaxy Nexus)...

New pictures have surfaced of the alleged successor to LG's pricey G-Slate that confirm it will be an LTE device. Images of the new Optimus Pad first appeared around Thanksgiving, but its 4G status was unclear at the time; one of the new photos, published by Korean site Cetizen, clearly shows off an LTE startup screen. The tablet is reported to include a 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8.9-inch, 1280 x 768 TFT screen, and 1GB of storage (a microSD slot is also included). Featuring both a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear-facing shooter, the tablet will be running Android 3.2.1 Honeycomb at launch — though an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich should be forthcoming. Of cour...

Motorola promises Android 4.0 ICS upgrades for DROID RAZR, DROID BIONIC, XOOM (again)

Posted on Dec 08, 2011 by MG1

Motorola has posted a rather lengthy explanation of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade process to its corporate blog, where it details the four major steps that need to occur before a software update is made available to users. Unfortunately, the company doesn't provide any extra information as to exactly when the Android 4.0 upgrade for existing devices will be released or when it plans to launch new devices with Android 4.0 already on them. It did reiterate its previous commitment to bring the new software to the DROID RAZR, DROID BIONIC, and XOOM tablet, but it has yet to provide an exact timeframe.

OnLive unveils its cloud gaming app for smartphones and tablets

It's been a long wait since we first heard about OnLive's plans to turn every tablet and smartphone into a gaming console, where the heavy lifting in games graphics processing will be done by the company's servers, and you will be only streamed the pretty imagery, sending back input control commands for number crunching.
OnLive unveiled its iOS and Android apps yesterday, and there are about 25 titles now that are optimized for touchscreen controls, including L.A. Noire. Of course, the larger the touchscreen the more comfortable will the gaming experience be, so tablets are a primer candidate for some OnLive-ing than smartphones with smaller screens, for example.
The company's proprietary st...

Anti-jailbreak BlackBerry PlayBook patch cracked in one day

Anti-jailbreak BlackBerry PlayBook patch cracked in one day

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

RIM's attempt to stomp out jailbreaking proved ineffective early Wednesday. Less than a day after posting a 1.0.8.6067 update to cover the security exploit used to open up the OS, a version 2.1 beta update for the DingleBerry root has come to get around the patch. Users have to install the crack before they apply the patch, but they just need to run a single command-line task to get root-level access.
The quick turnaround shows that RIM has some time to go before it claim to have mostly locked down security for the PlayBook. Although jailbreaks on iOS often come quickly, Apple's experience with patching the holes used by jailbreakers has meant that they usually take longer to find, especiall...

Rumor: Amazon Kindle Fire launching in the UK next month?

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Amazon’s 7 inch Android tablet that isn’t an Android tablet, the Kindle Fire, has been out in the United States for a few weeks now. Sadly, for everyone else on the planet it isn’t. According to the folks at Know Your Mobile, that’s soon going to change, at least for the UK. They say that the Kindle Fire will launch as early as next month in Jolly Ol’ England. No other details, such as the all important price tag, were revealed. Now to be completely honest, we don’t buy this rumor. History has a way of repeating itself, so let’s look at what happened with the first Kindle. It came out in November 2007, was out of stock until April 2008, and it never left America. The second Kindle came out i...
