Amazon may move 12 million Kindle Fire tablets in 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAmazonKindle Fire
We like the Kindle Fire’s odds, and we revealed as much in our review of Amazon’s new tablet published on Tuesday. Analysts have been betting on the Fire as well, with shipment estimates reaching as high as 5 million units for the fourth quarter alone. As detailed in a recent note to investors, Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney sees Amazon’s success in the tablet market spilling into the new year, with sales of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets reaching 12 million units for the full year in 2012. Increasing competition and falling prices could make 12 million tablets a tall order, but if Amazon can pull it off, it will manage to acquire 15% of the tablet market and roughly $3.2 billion in revenue th...

Cyanogen 9 coming soon to Galaxy Tab 10.1
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGALAXY Tab 10.1
The last we had heard, Cyanogen 9, which is based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, wouldn't be rolling out for a couple months, or at least we shouldn't bother asking Team Douche about it for a couple months. But, now it seems Galaxy Tab 10.1 users may get in on the fun much sooner.
Just last week Steve Kondik, founder of Cyanogen, tweeted that work had begun on Cyanogen 9. A mere four days later, he posted on Google+ (he plussed? he GPed? We need a good verb for it...) and said that Cyanogen 9 is "great" on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and should be "coming soon" to CyanogenMod mirrors.
We expected work on Cyanogen 9 to go faster on Honeycomb tablets because the drivers for those devices...

iOS 5 code references support 'J2' model iPad 3
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsAppleiOS 5iPad 3
Code strings in iOS 5 support the existence of the "J2" model iPad 3 claimed by Digitimes, according to 9to5Mac. The device is listed alongside familiar codenames for other Apple devices such as the iPhone 4. Apple has allegedly been considering two different designs as a successor to the iPad 2, the J2 being a more advanced device than the J1, also using different dimensions. The iOS 5 code also groups the J2 alongside other 3G-capable hardware.
The J2 is expected to have a extremely high-resolution 2048x1536 display, and by extension twin LED light bars. Few other details have emerged about its design, but parts for an iPad 3 are already believed to be in production. The likely goal is hav...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 pays a visit to the FCC
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGalaxy Tab 7.7
Just a couple months after the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 vanished from their booth at IFA due to an injunction filed against them it has resurfaced for a return trip to the FCC, this time packing 3G bands as well as support for HSPA+…
The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is a tablet for the individuals that will find the Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus to be too small while the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is too large. Samsung seems interested in having a tablet for a whole variety of hand sizes. The display itself is of the Super AMOLED Plus type which should be a joy to gaze at. Powering the device behind the scenes is a dual-core 1.4GHz processor as well has 1GB of RAM. Of course, this is an Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet that also ha...

Quad-core powered HTC Quattro possibly delayed until March 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHTC
Just the other day, we filled your head with the HTC Quattro. This is a high-end tablet that is expected to be equipped with a quad-core NVIDIA 3 processor under the hood, a 10.1 inch display with resolution of 1280x768, powered by Ice Cream Sandwich. We already pointed out that at 9mm, the HTC Quattro is just a tad thicker than the Apple iPad 2 and in addition to offering Beats Audio technology, Sense 4.0 is expected to be running on top of Android 4.0.

Originally, the HTC Quatro was set to take its high-end specs and roil the tablet market during this holiday shopping season, giving some competition to the quad-core...

RIM trims $300 from BlackBerry PlayBook prices
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
Research In Motion’s debut tablet hasn’t bowled people over like the company had hoped, and now it is pushing a huge sale in hopes of drumming up interest during the holiday shopping season. For a limited time through participating retailers, RIM is offering its BlackBerry PlayBook slate for $300 below MSRP, representing savings of up to 60%. Sale pricing comes in at $199.99 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB version and $399 for the 64GB model, and participating retailers include Best Buy, Walmart RadioShack and more.
After selling 500,000 PlayBooks into channels during the tablet’s first quarter of availability, RIM sold just 200,000 units to distributors last quarter. Analyst checks in...

Though we expect the ASUS Transformer Prime to launch with Android 3.2 Honeycomb on board when it ships next month, that doesn't mean that NVIDIA and ASUS aren't hard at work getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running on the convertible tablet. As proof of this, NVIDIA has released a demo video that gives us one of our first looks at Ice Cream Sandwich on a tablet and showcases some of the new features of Android 4.0.

HP TouchPad earns number two tablet spot in U.S. thanks to fire sale
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
NPD has concluded in a recent study that the TouchPad, HP’s last webOS product for the foreseeable future, turned out to be the second-most popular tablet in the U.S. so far this year. While it might seem crazy that a dead platform managed to beat out a dearth of Android competition (namely from Samsung), the $100 fire sale following HP’s announcement to cease webOS development obviously helped out a lot. NPD figures HP claimed 17% of the U.S. tablet market share between January and October 2011, followed up by Samsung at 16%, ASUS at 10%, Motorola at 9%, and Acer at 9%.

Samsung delivers Android 3.2 Honeycomb update to Galaxy Tab 10.1
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsSamsungGoogleGALAXY Tab 10.1Android 3.2
Last week, Samsung released an update to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that brought along Android 3.2 Honeycomb to the slate. Unfortunately, it also broke a few important functions, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and others on a number of users' tablets. As a result of that, Samsung quickly halted the roll-out of the update to fix the issues. Now, the company claims that it has resolved all of the problems with the upgrade and has started distributing it to users once again. Owners of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 should get a notification on the tablet when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed. It can also be installed from Samsung's Kies desktop app on a PC.

Apple iPad 3 to be slightly thicker, iPhone 5 longer so as to accommodate a 4" display
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTabletsAppleiPad 3
Welcome, new season of leaks about the next iDevices, we've hardly had reruns of the last one. And so it goes - the iPad 3 we've heard ad nauseam about already, is now rumored to be slightly thicker than iPad 2, in order to accommodate the twin LED light bars needed for the high-resolution display, which was supposedly the culprit for its delays. This one is supposed to come in March the latest, and supposedly announced as soon as January, if its screen makers LG, Samsung and Sharp get their ducks in a row on time.

Nvidia CEO: $299 Tegra 3 Tablet to Become Reality in Six Months
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsnVIDIA
So far what is the biggest threat to the iPad’s largely unchallenged supremacy in the tablet market? The answer has certainly got to be Amazon's Kindle Fire, which sports a very enticing $200 price tag. Even though the Kindle Fire is probably the only non-iPad tablet to have generated iPad-like buzz, it's not the only affordable tablet on the market. The ranks of sub-$300 tablets are constantly swelling. And if NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang is right, soon there will be a number of Tegra 3 tablets in this price range.
But exactly how soon, you ask? Well, in a couple of quarters according to Huang. He made this claim while talking to media persons in New York on Friday. Apparently, he was in a mo...

Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet already rooted
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsBarnes & NobleNOOK Tablet
Keeping up the tradition of hacked Nooks, XDA-Developers forum contributors have posted a full root for the Nook Tablet. A combination of USB drivers as well as either a batch program or a command line sequence will let users freely install or remove apps on the Android 2.3 slate. The hack, zergRush, doesn't unlock the bootloader and thus won't take completely new firmware like CyanogenMod.
Barnes & Noble hasn't been openly embracing of hacks, but it has been conscious of the increasing pressure to turn its most advanced Nook devices into general tablets. After first limiting the Nook Color to a handful of features, the bookstore added an app store and otherwise filled out the Android 2.2 u...

Samsung's modified Galaxy Tab 10.1N for Germany gets examined
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungAppleGALAXY Tab 10.1
As you may recall from earlier this week, Samsung has started selling a slightly modified version of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Germany to satisfy a recent court ruling, which deemed the original model a little too Apple-like in some respects. Just how modified is the new 10.1N model? Well, you can thank NewGadgets.de for our first real look at it. As expected, the changes are all found around the edges of the device, including a more pronounced metal lip that creeps further across the bezel, some repositioned speakers, and... that's about it, really.

Smartphone and tablet growth to slow in 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTablets
Growth in smartphone and tablet buying is set to cool in 2012, with the CEA – the people behind CES – predicting a big fall in popularity for the devices.
2011 was a massive year for tablets, with Steve Koenig, director and industry analyst at the CEA, noting that there was 207 per cent growth in the buying of tablets in 2011.
In 2012, however, this number has been slashed to 59 per cent. When it comes to smartphones, growth is set to drop from 63 per cent to 22 per cent.
One of the reasons for this could well be the explosion of apps on the market, meaning that consumers are personalising their devices with applications and because of this not looking for an upgrade.
The CEA is reportin...

Rumors: iPad 3 thicker, four-inch iPhone 5, new MacBook Pro
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsApple
An as yet unconfirmed rumor has outlined minor but significant details of Apple's 2012 roadmap. The tip to iLounge had the iPad 3's dual LED backlight leading to a rare increase in an Apple's device thickness, by 0.7mm (0.03in). The thickness would still keep it thinner than the original iPad but would show a sacrifice to get the rumored 2048x1536 display, whose density would reduce the amount of outbound light without the extra LED.
As expected, it would ship in March, and might be introduced in January "depending on conditions," the source said.
The claim also described a fifth-generation iPhone unlike either the since disproven design or the iPhone 4S. It would grow to a four-inch displ...
