Microsoft may have inadvertently confirmed some details on Windows 8 today when Windows chief Steven Sinofsky posted a list of teams working on the next-gen operating system. The post, titled “Introducing the team,” was published on Microsoft’s recently inaugurated Building Windows 8 blog and revealed that the next-gen platform will indeed have an app store as well as possible Kinect integrations.

OS X 10.7.1 Lion Update fixes Wi-Fi Issues and more

Since the release of OS X Lion in July, I was pretty pleased with the new features. Then the Wi-Fi connection did not restore all the time after wake-up. Only a Wi-Fi restart fixed the connection. Today Apple released the first OS X Lion Update with OS X 10.7.1. One of the mentioned fixes is the improvement of the Wi-Fi reliability. I already updated my iMac and lets hope the bug is gone.
Other fixes in OS X 10.7.1:
- Address an issue that may cause the system to become unresponsive when playing a video in Safari
- Resolve an issue that may cause system audio to stop working when using HDMI or optical audio out

Microsoft geared up for the launch of Windows 8 with the start of an official blog on Monday to help developers. The first post by Windows president Steven Sinofsky recapped the shift to a more mobile focus for the OS but also addressed complaints about the lack of information beyond the first look. Windows Phone 7.5 to freeze updates for WP7.0 apps

Microsoft has admitted that the upcoming Windows Phone 7.5 update may cause a hiccup for many developers. As developers are beginning to submit applications for the major release, the company cautions that apps released for Windows Phone 7.0 devices will not be able to receive any further updates once a developer posts a v7.5 build.
"We realize that some of you may worry about this limitation, and so we’re actively working on ways to mitigate it," Microsoft's Todd Brix wrote in a blog post. "To improve the experience for users, it’s our preference not to have “duplicate versions” of your apps in the marketplace."

With launch of Mango Marketplace NoDo apps will be frozen

Microsoft has posted a blog post detailing what effect the roll-out of new Mango apps, which have features which are not compatible with Windows phone 7 NoDo, will have on Marketplace.
It appears once a developer updates an app for Mango, the NoDo version of their app will be held in frozen, available for users who are still on NoDo, but with the developer no longer being able to provide updates for that version of the app.

Low end Windows Phones should not mean low spec

There has been a lot of talk lately about the next wave of Windows Phone handsets taking aim at the mid and low end of the market to combat the proliferation of Android devices in that space. It is my hope that Microsoft will not be tempted to let OEMS build cheap lower spec phones just for that purpose. Instead, I think they should follow the Apple model and make the current generation phones be their low end and the next generation be their high end.

Android-powered tablets have taken 20% of the global tablet market from Apple’s iPad over the past 12 months according to new data from ABI Research. While Android tablets have collectively managed to make a sizable dent in the iPad’s global market share, ABI says no single tablet vendor has managed to “mount a significant challenge” against the iPad at this point.

Developers confident in Windows Phone survival, number of WP7 developers to increase 150% in 6 months

GetJar has published the result of their latest App Meter developer survey, and it holds good news for Windows Phone 7.
They have surveyed 300 developers and found developers were ready to move on from iOS devices to other platforms. While 80% of developers were working on iPhone apps, in 6 months 30% expected to move on to other platforms, primarily Android tablets, which rose from 20.5% now to 47% in the future.

Report: Compal to start shipping Nokia’s first WP7 smartphones, 2 million in total

According to Dan Nystedt, ex IDG news, Compal is to start shipments of their first batch of Windows Phone 7 smartphones for Nokia, expected to include the Nokia Sea Ray.
The shipments would be in time for the announcement and simultaneous release of the handset at Nokia World in London on October 26th, and will apparently total 2 million handsets in Q4 2011.
If Nokia does manage to sell all of those handsets it would mean a substantial bump in the number of Windows Phone 7 handsets sold in 2011, currently likely sitting around 5 million.
Nokia has said in 2012 volume shipments will start which will flood the market with a variety of handsets at a variety of price points.

Let's face it, waiting for official releases is awful. We're constantly getting news, images and teasers on everything that's on the horizon, but the actual release date for this stuff is always farther away than we would like. We've been seeing info coming out for Windows Phone Mango for quite a while now, and just when we thought we might see the update pushed out early, it turns out September 1st is just a rumor, so we still don't know when the official update will roll out. Luckily for everyone, the dev community over at XDA loves to get their hands on things early and send it our way.

Apple as it promised before before has started shipping USB drives carrying Mac OS X Lion in its retail stores. The $70 drive, unlike the USB recovery sticks, includes a full copy of the OS for those who can't or prefer not to download the whole install itself. Apple isn't offering Lion Server or volume packs in the same terms.
