When it was first released last fall, one of the nice things about owning the LG Optimus S was the fact that it came with Android 2.2 Froyo out of the box – and in fact, it was one of the few at the time to sport that version. U.S. Cellular has released the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its HTC Merge smartphone. The update offers improved power management, a refined user interface, easier copy and paste, and more control over running apps. There is a new Flashlight app for the camera LED, and the Merge now supports 802.11n Wi-Fi connections for faster downloads. Users can download the update from U.S. Cellular's website and install it on their smartphones through a PC.

Android Market weather apps the most profitable

If you want to make money on the Android Market, then the best apps to create are weather ones.
This is according to a new study by Research2Guidance, which has taken a look at all the app categories on the Android Market to see which one offers the best profit.
According to the research, weather apps are significantly more profitable than games, with the average revenue of a paid weather app coming in at $22,000, while games make around the $5,000 mark.
And don't even think about creating an app for the multimedia market as the monetisation of these is pretty paltry, with each app garnering just $300 revenue.

Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system will not require a processing powerhouse to run efficiently, the company claimed during the official unveiling.
At the Build developers' conference, Windows President Stephen Sinofsky demonstrated Windows 8 running on his own Lenovo S10 netbook, which is around three years old.
Sinofsky used Windows Task Manager to show that Windows 8 required less system resources than Windows 7 and that the aging Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM set-up was "enough" to run the new OS.

Curious what the minimum specifications for Windows 8 will be? As are we. Microsoft's remaining mum on specifics, but the outfit's Steven Sinofsky -- President of Windows and Windows Live -- just confessed during the opening Build 2011 keynote that an antediluvian Lenovo S10 was potent enough to run Windows 8. And in fact, it'll do so with more poise than with Windows 7. A brief demonstration explained that Win8 demanded fewer system resources (barely, but still) than Win7 on the same hardware, proving that an early-gen Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM is "enough" to run the outfit's upcoming operating system. In a demo at the BUILD keynote Steve Sinofsky demonstrated a Silverlight application being ported by changing only one line of code from Windows 8 to Windows Phone 7.
This would increase the addressable market for bot Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8 developers immensely, and removes the concern developers had that Windows Phone 7 will become a Silverlight island in a sea of HTML5.

Intel plans to show Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 on tablets based on new Atom processors, and on ultrabooks, at both the Intel Developer Forum and Microsoft's Build conference this week, according to a source familiar with Intel's plans.
Intel will show off Windows 8 ultrabooks and other devices as it drums up developer support for the OS on the x86 platform. Windows 8 will work on tablets and PCs, and Microsoft has extended support for the OS beyond x86 to include the ARM architecture, which is used in most smartphones and tablets.

Apple is expected to ship the finished version of iOS 5 to manufacturers the last week of September, Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo understood from sources on Monday. The current schedule would have the iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod touch get the completed (gold master) OS between September 23 and 30. In the first of what we expect to be many announcements related to Windows Phone Mango devices, AT&T stepped up to the plate this morning by unveiling three new "4G" handsets that use the latest version of Microsoft's OS: the HTC Titan, Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash. We already know quite a bit about the Titan, but details on Sammy's selections are slim for now -- images aren't even available for either phone, though it's likely we've seen at least one of them before. In addition, the carrier's also planning to update its entire existing lineup with Windows Phone 7.5.

Intel has tipped upcoming support for Android 2.3x ("Gingerbread") on its Atom E6xx processor and denied rumors it is discontinuing support for the MeeGo project. Despite Ice Cream Sandwich not having been released for Google's mobile platform, it seems we've already got information on the name of the next iteration.
Apparently 'trusted sources' from This Is My Next have revealed that we're going to be waiting on the release of Android Jelly Bean next, which could be dubbed Android 4.5 or Android 5.0, depending on the amount of features packed into the new platform.
TechRadar exclusively revealed the name of Google's Tablet OS - Honeycomb - 10 months before it was launched to the public this year, so it's likely that it will be a long time until we see Android Jelly Bean.
