Whenever I get a new Android device, I always throw on the Amazon App Store in order to get free, high-quality paid apps each day. While that’s great for consumers and has surely brought in a lot of traffic, is this approach good for app makers?
According to a blog post from the Shifty Jelly team, the Amazon App Store free app giveaway program is great for consumers and for Amazon but it can be kind of a raw deal for developers. There are over 500,000 daily Android activations and we know this for a fact, but the platform has proliferated to now reach nearly half of all smartphones in the world, research gurus from Canalys stated in a report summarizing data for the second quarter of the year. To be perfectly correct, Android's exact market share stands at 48% as per the researchers, with Asia Pacific being the largest market out there.

I’ve never been the sort that was willing to risk running one of my gadgets applying unofficial software and updates. I tend to make do with what OS my gear is running until the official update finally comes out. If you are the sort that likes to apply beta software and unofficial updates to your gadgets and use a Logitech Revue set-top box you may like the unofficial update.

HTC Desire gets updated to Gingerbread, but not really

If you are among the bunch of people still holding on to their trusty HTC Desire, you might not like the news that we have to share with you. It looks like the smartphone will not be treated to Gingerbread after all, or at least not in the form of a full-fledged update that HTC was expected to release by the end of July.
Technically, an official Gingerbread ROM for the HTC Desire will be available for download, yet it will not be pushed out to the general public due to a number of issues that the HTC developer team simply couldn't hurdle. HTC Desire Gingerbread update available, excludes US and comes with long list of caveats

First off, if you own the North American variant of this handset then you're out of luck. Likewise, Japanese, South Korean and some German handsets are also excluded. Still here? Okay then, but you might not like what comes next. We already knew that either the Sense UI or some pre-installed apps would be cleared out to make room in the Gingerbread house, but now it seems the update is so unstable that HTC is only prepared to release it as a ROM via its developer site. That means a factory reset of your device, a bunch of worries about SMS and MMS not working properly, and a cold disclaimer in the event of things going wrong. Nielsen: Android accounts for 39 percent of smartphones in the US, Apple is the top device maker

Nielsen's just released a study confirming what some other studies have already concluded -- that Android devices account for the single largest swath of smartphone users in the US, with 39 percent OS share as of the second quarter. That compares with 28 percent for iOS, although Apple still reigns as the country's top-selling device maker. As expected, Samsung has started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates for the Galaxy Tab in the UK. We’re not sure whether everyone can get it at the moment, but as far as we know, it requires Samsung’s Kies software for the update process to take place. That said, it’s safe to bet over-the-air updates will follow shortly.

T-Mobile G2 owners have been waiting months for this day to come, as the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the smartphone has begun rolling out to customers.
Since the G2 runs a relatively bare version of Android, without any custom interfaces, the Android 2.3 update brings the standard upgrades and not much else. Android tablet population estimated at 1.2 million

While nobody would argue that Android smartphones are abundant these days, the situation with tablets running Google's mobile platform might not be so bright. According to an estimate given by the guys over at Daring Fireball, there may be as little as 1.17 million Android tablets currently in use worldwide.

Budget MSI Android 2.3 tablet floats through FCC

MSI is readying its very low-cost Enjoy 10 Android 2.3 tablet for the US with an appearance in an FCC filing on Friday. Only labeled as MS-N0Y1 in the manual, the device has a 10-inch screen with a lower 480x800 resolution and a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 for a processor. The slate would have 512MB of RAM and lean on a full-size SD card slot for much of its storage.
Only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth provide wireless.
Very little is known about if or when the Enjoy 10 would ship to the US, and if so what it would cost. Such modest specs could keep the design at or under $300 given that even ASUS' Eee Pad Transformer costs $400. MSI also has an Enjoy 7 but hasn't indicated whether or not it would reach the US.

Motorola ATRIX 4G gets Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update

Motorola has pushed out Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) to the Motorola ATRIX 4G. The update adds a number of new enhancements unrelated to Gingerbread, including support for 1080p HD video playback, a re-designed home screen with white backgrounds for easier reading of text, an enhanced photo gallery, the ability to dismiss notifications one at a time, a faster Webtop browsing experience, enhancements to the dock icons and more. To update, make sure your ATRIX 4G is connected to a Wi-Fi network and then go to Settings > About Phone > System updates > Download. Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

If Samsung’s Android lineup is feeling a little sparse on AT&T, don’t worry… there’s about to be a new flagship in town. We have just exclusively received a photo of an unnamed Samsung device complete with sliding QWERTY keyboard that’s headed to AT&T in the coming months. While we don’t have much to go on, the device will sport the four-button Android layout as opposed to Samsung’s typical three-button layout at AT&T’s request, and the QWERTY keyboard even reflects that.
