Google preps new Search for Android with better suggestions

Google briefly published and then retracted word of an update to the the Google Search app for Android (Android Market, not yet updated). The new release offers enhanced suggestions and general performance improvements. With this update, suggestions are now grouped by type, and web recommendations are now found at the top of the viewing screen.
The new app also offers country specific suggestions and groups search results for all countries with Google domains. Amongst the performance enhancements, items from the history can be removed with a long press. The user interface has been simplified over the earlier version, which hasn't been updated since October.

Chromium's experimental touch UI demoed on video, made for meaty fingers

Google was pretty adamant at I/O that Chrome OS would not be coming tablets, but that hasn't stopped its open-source cousin from adding some touch friendly features. Chromium (the browser, not the OS) got its first tablet tweaks back in June, but this is the first time we're seeing them on video. While the larger icons, widgets, and virtual keyboard, may eventually make their way onto the rumored Seaboard, there's no guarantee these (obviously still early) experiments will ever debut as part of Chrome OS or even the browser. I’m Android Watch Now Available For Pre-Order

While I found the I’m Watch ridiculous and feel that wearable tech isn’t nearly as close to being viable as we’ve been led to expect, the watch is actually shipping and will cost $350 when Blue Sky begins selling their pre-orders.
The watch runs a Freescale IMX233 CPU and connects to a cellphone via Bluetooth. It lets you check messages and other wee bits of information and little else.
You can check out the exciting video render at the Blue Sky website, below, and place your order now so you can, eventually, forget about the watch after it runs out of power and you decide it’s too much trouble to recharge.

iOS, Android security flaw shown by 10-year-old girl at Defcon

A 10-year-old girl has figured out a way to outsmart game developers and cheat at games designed for iOS and Android by exploiting a security vulnerability within the clock system. The cheat works by modifying the clock settings on the device to accelerate time within the game's environment.
Apparently, CyFi, as the hacker calls herself, was bored playing Farmville-type games and wanted to speed up time in the virtual world to make crops grow faster. Her fiddling with the clock on the mobile device revealed a "zero day" exploit that tricked the game into thinking much more time had passed than was actually the case. Google has always had a somewhat idiosyncratic way of numbering its software versions. Sometimes, big software changes get a big number increase, like the jump from Android Gingerbread (2.3) to Honeycomb (3.0/3.1). However, sometimes big number changes fly by (Chrome's newest stable release is version 13, and the Chrome browser isn't even 2 years old yet.) But, with the newest version of YouTube for Android, Google is taking a different path: a minor version number bump (from 2.1.6 to 2.2.14), and brings a couple of very nice features.

AT&T HTC Inspire 4G Gingerbread update now available

HTC began pushing out the Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) update to the AT&T HTC Inspire 4G on Monday. Customers will receive notifications to update over-the-air or they can manually initiate the installation process by navigating to Home > Menu > Settings > AT&T Software Update > HTC Wi-Fi software update > Check now. The patch also includes an updated Sense application tray, new FriendStream features, fixes for minor bugs and an updated Quick Settings menu in the notifications shade. HTC says Inspire 4G users should notice an improved media experience and better power management as well.

Samsung Galaxy S II users in Brazil and Poland get Android 2.3.4 update

Samsung has started rolling out the Android 2.3.4 update for its super-popular Galaxy S II smartphone. The first two countries to get it are Poland and Brazil where the XXKG5 and UHKG7 updates are available on Kies for users using the device with Polish (XEO) and Brazilian (TTT) CSC respectively.
We’ve no idea what’s all included with this release but can guess some of the known bugs will be fixed, some other things improved, few apps updated, while also the overall stability of the smartphone has been increased . Security hackers crack Google's Chrome OS using web tricks

Samsung as part of the kickoff of its TouchWiz rollout for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 revealed that the update wouldn't be optional in practice for real users. Although owners will have the option of declining the custom interface, they won't have the option of upgrading to Android 3.2, Ice Cream Sandwich, or any other patch. The move would leave everyone preferring the original, stock experience locked to 3.1 for the device's remaining lifetime.
TouchWiz had been promised for the tablet from March onwards, but Samsung only clarified that it wouldn't be preloaded relatively close to the launch.

Android conquers almost 50 percent of smartphone market

A new study by researcher Canalys indicates that Google’s Android platform has reached nearly 50 percent of the global smartphone market.
Canalys’ Q2 2011 smartphone market estimates show that globally, the industry grew by 73 percent year-on-year with over 100 million devices shipped in Q2 2011. This seems to align with a study from IMS Research that claims smartphones will account for 28 percent of handsets sold this year.
Android ranked number one in 35 of the 56 countries that Canalys polled in the market estimate. Shipments of devices running Google’s operating system were up 379 percent from this time last year.

Cellular South Gets Some Gingerbread Via the Samsung Admire

Cellular South recently revealed information about a new Android handset from Samsung called the Admire. This monoblock device includes Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 3.5-inch touch display with 320 x 480 pixels, a 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 3.5mm headset jack. It also includes a microSD port for cards up to 32GB. Cellular South has yet to reveal pricing and availability for the Samsung Admire.
