Google held its earnings call for Q3 2011 today and the numbers are looking good for the company. On the purely financial side of things, Google is reporting record earnings. Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
New rumors circulating are pointing to a new October 18 launch for both Google’s latest operating system Android 4 and the next flagship Nexus phone from Samsung, which will showcase Ice Cream Sandwich. The launch date was postponed from its planned October 11 launch following the death of Steve Jobs. Droid-Life sources have said that the revised launch is now expected to coincide with the AsiaD: All Things Digital event in Hong Kong beginning next week.
The rescheduled Unpacked event is now only going to take place in outside of the US, where the original event was scheduled to coincide with CTIA currently underway in San Diego. For US users interested in following the event, it is said to ...

Well what do you know, Verizon and Motorola are preparing to launch an update for the Droid X2. We’ve no idea when that will exactly happen — as far as I know you may be getting it while reading this — but since the update already got a dedicated page at Verizon’s website (PDF file is here), I assume this will happen sooner rather than later.

CyanogenMod 7.1 brings support for Xperias and 20 other handsets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
All it took was a little love from Sony Ericsson and now CyanogenMod's latest official release includes support for a happy cohort of 2011 Xperias as well as the X8. The same goes for Samsung, which doled out a free GSII and some employment and now finds that the Galaxy smartphones are on version 7.1's list too. Wondering if your particular Droid, Optimus or Incredible can run the cyan shade of Gingerbread and its attendant perks? Then check the source link for the full roll-call of newly supported devices -- but remember, despite the increasingly friendly overtures from manufacturers, installing a custom ROM comes with certain pitfalls and can void your warranty. Got that? Now go and play s...

AT&T Toggle separates your mobile work and play, allows for IT meddling
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAT&TGoogleAndroid 2.2
Having trouble separating your bird slingshotting from your mergers and acquisitions? Have no fear, AT&T has announced its new Toggle service, which promises users the ability to keep their work and home lives apart on a single Android smartphone or tablet. The feature keeps business information secure and lets IT admins manage access to company resources, add or delete business apps and even wipe corporate info off of a device, in the event the employee leaves the company. The app is coming later this year and will be compatible with devices running Android 2.2 or higher. There's no word on pricing yet, but more info can be found in the press release after the break.

BlueStacks Releases App Player And Cloud Connect Service To Let You Run Android Apps On Your PC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Back in May, BlueStacks raised $7.5 million in series A financing from Andreessen Horowitz, Ignition Ventures, Radar Partners, Redpoint Ventures, and more. This was all pre-launch. Why that kind of money for a startup that hasn’t launched a product yet? Because approximately 630 million new Windows PCs will be shipped by the end of this year, and because BlueStacks has designed downloadable software that will enable Android apps to run on (hopefully) all of them.
And today, to put that money where its mouth is, BlueStacks is announcing the release of the first products that will be a part of its ongoing quest to do just that. For starters, the company is making available the alpha version of...

Android 4 leak shows Google Music 4.0, Google+ 2.0
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
A leak of an Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) build has unearthed two important remade apps. Google Music 4.0 has a much cleaner, streamlined interface more in line with the "holographic" look, Android Police saw. It would have more control over playback with thumbs-up and thumbs-down options along with much larger album art.
The build obtained so far doesn't have the offline caching option, however, leading to worries that Google might have lost rights to storing music offline. It's possible the feature was temporarily disabled for a given build or is waiting for certain other conditions before it comes online.
A further sighting also uncovered the as yet unofficial Google+ 2.0. Interface c...

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich: everything you need to know
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google has dropped some interesting information about Ice Cream Sandwich, the next version of Android - Android 4.0 at its Google I/O conference. We'll update this article with more information on the new Android 4.0 release as soon as we get it.
It talked about the new OS during the Opening keynote speech of the Google I/O conference in San Francisco.
Real Ice Cream Sandwiches aren't exactly prevalent in the UK - we have wafers - so if you want to see a real Ice Cream Sandwich, you'd better do some scrolling.
As we reported from Google's keynote at Mobile World Congress, Google's mantra for the Android 4.0 OS is "one OS everywhere" – it will be a single 4.0 version of Android running across...

Google Docs Android app updated, looking beautiful on Honeycomb tablets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 3.0
Google rolled out an Android application for its Google Docs web service and since then it has been actively working on not only changing the layout for the web version of Docs, but also its Android version. The latest update brings entirely new visuals to the app. It comes with a three-pane layout for Honeycomb tablets, lists of documents, collections and document previews.
The panel on the left displays a preview of the documents you’ve selected but it also gives a quick peek at the people who have access to that exact document. The app now looks very mature with nice little touches like autocomplete in forms. The new features come translated in more than 46 languages.

Gingerbread on 39% of Android devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 2.3
The newest Android platform version distribution chart was quietly updated while Apple was making its big speech today. It's showing a solid uptick in Gingerbread adoption throughout the Android ecosystem, but it also points out an annoying lack of information with the distribution chart.
According to the new numbers, Gingerbread is the big winner this month and is installed on 39% of Android devices in the wild. This isn't surprising as many devices have been getting the Gingerbread update recently. This marks a jump of 7.5% for Gingerbread over the last month. The losers, again unsurprisingly, were Froyo (2.2) which dropped from 51.2% to 45.3% and Eclair (2.0/2.1) which dropped from 13.3%...

Google Chrome Headed to Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Among a host of other things, Google is also a mighty successful browser vendor, what with both its desktop and mobile browsers occupying the third spot in their respective markets and constantly conquering fresh ground. However, a lot of people are wondering why Google continues to have two separate browsers for the desktop and mobile markets. But soon enough these people will have better things to do, for an effort to port Chrome over to Android now seems to be underway.
According to the Chromium codebase website, Android has been set up as a build target. It will be interesting to see what all features make the transition from the desktop to Android. As you’d expect, not much is known abo...

Samsung Galaxy S II is the king of Android sales in the UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleAndroidGalaxy S II
This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when you consider the fact that Samsung has moved more than 10 million Galaxy S II units worldwide, but the Galaxy S II is the top selling Android smartphone in the UK.
The Galaxy S II is the best-selling smartphone ever produced by Samsung. With its 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, dual-core 1.2GHz Exynos processor and an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video recording capabilities what’s not to love?
There was one point in September, the third week of the month, where the Galaxy S II was purchased with a contract more than any other Android manufacturer in the entire country. That is domination when you consider the competition that Samsung is con...

Schmidt says Google won't screw up Android with Motorola acquisition
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMotorolaGoogleAndroid
When Google acquired Motorola over the summer, the biggest concern was that the relationship balance would shift away from the other manufacturers. Google reassured us that Motorola wouldn’t automatically be first in line to work on Nexus handsets, and Google ex-CEO (now Chairman) Eric Schmidt recently reiterated the sentiment in an interview.
“The Android ecosystem is the No. 1 priority, and that we won’t do anything with Motorola, or anybody else by the way, that would screw up the dynamics of that industry. We need strong, hard competition among all the Android players. We won’t play favorites in the way people are concerned about.”
That’s nice to hear and all, but I could hardly blame ot...
