HTC and Verizon Wireless have apparently restarted the deployment of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original DROID Incredible. Initially released back in September, the companies pulled the update shortly after it went out for undisclosed reasons. Here we are over two months later and users are reporting left and right that the upgrade is once again available to them. Users should get a notification on their devices when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed, or they can manually check through the Settings app on the phone itself.

Firefox 8 for Android released, brings security enhancements and more
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
If that stock internet browser on your Android smartphone does not live up to your expectations, you are probably using one of its numerous alternatives. But even if it seemingly gets the job done, it is always a good idea seeing what the substitutes are, as they often come loaded with goodies you may have never thought you'd use.
Firefox for Android, one of the most popular alternatives to that built-in web browser, has just been updated to version 8, which brings along a set of both minor and major improvements. A Master Password feature has been included in the app's latest release and lets you encrypt the usernames and passwords that the browser stores onto your device. Another new addit...

Barnes & Noble asked Justice Department to go after Microsoft in response to Android patent lawsuits
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleBarnes & NobleAndroid
Microsoft's strategy of demanding patent license fees from major Android device makers has been resoundingly successful in recent months, but that doesn't mean it's not controversial: the Wall Street Journal says Barnes & Noble has asked the Justice Department for an antitrust investigation into Redmond's attempts to "kill off" Android devices from smaller players with license fees and lawsuits. B&N told the government over the summer that "Microsoft's willingness to bully small players with expensive litigation raises a substantial barrier to entry" because only big companies can afford to pay the license fees. Unfortunately, we don't know how much Microsoft asks in fees, so we can't really...

Microsoft chasing down Huawei for Android patent license agreement
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHuaweiGoogleAndroid
Microsoft is chasing down Huawei in search of a patent licensing agreement, The Guardian reported on Tuesday. “Yes, Microsoft has come to us,” Huawei Devices chief marketing officer Victor Xu told The Guardian. ”We always respect the intellectual property of companies. But we have 65,000 patents worldwide too. We have enough to protect our interests. We are a very important stakeholder in Android.” Xu also said that “negotiations are in progress” with Microsoft, which takes home an estimated $444 million annually from Android royalties. Microsoft has a cross-licensing agreement with Samsung and has similar deals with HTC, ViewSonic and other Android device vendors. It is expected that Micros...

Samsung Galaxy S II treated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, hats off to MIUI ROM
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGalaxy S IIAndroid 4.0
The Samsung Galaxy S II and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich? To us that sounds like a killer combination, but while others would probably have to wait until early 2012 when Samsung is expected to roll out the ICS update, you can have it now if you dare flash the MIUI ROM on your S II.
The crafty developers behind one of the most popular mods for Android, have brought ICS, but it's not exactly in its vanilla form. You'd still get MIUI's signature looks and customization and not the neon glow of Android 4.0, so while you lose the UI elements, the functionality is there.

HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
HTC outlined some of its Android plans on Monday that included both the courtroom and its products. In a far-ranging briefing, the company's CEO Peter Chou told Reuters his company was "open-minded" to the prospect of buying patents to escalate its fight with Apple. There weren't any specific plans, he said.
The company has so far had a tough time in legal battles with Apple, being found in violation in one complaint and having other attempts shot down. It has only made small gestures towards improving its ability to contest Apple's claims, buying S3 after a patent win and borrowing from Google and Motorola for countersuits.
In extra comments, Chou added that the company would push more into...

Google rumored investing in Korea for Android, search
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt will be in Seoul this week to meet with executives from South Korea's leading telecom and personal electronics companies. According to a source at The Korean Times, Schmidt will announce a number of significant investments in Korea, including a possible local Internet Data Center. Until recently, Google has struggled to establish itself in the market against Korean search companies Naver and Daum.
Thanks to the growing popularity of Android smartphones and tablets, Google has seen a rapid increase in its customer base. One estimate puts the number of Android-powered smartphones in Korea at 20 million. One rumor has Google buying Daum to gain an even bigger share ...

Many have wondered what HTC's plans are when it comes to upgrading its existing Android smartphones to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as the manufacturer has said that it was still evaluating the new operating system and how it fits with HTC's custom Sense interface that it likes to use. Now, those questions have found answers, as HTC has announced a list of eight smartphones that will get Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades in 2012.
The company says that in addition to the just-released HTC Vivid, which is apparently ready for Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL, HTC Sensation XE, HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, and HTC Amaze 4G are all planned to get...

Gingerbread is now the dominant Android version
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 2.3
Android 2.3.x has slowly caught up with updates arriving on most contemporary handsets and now it has become the most popular version of Google's platform. Android 2.3.x devices make up 44.4% of all gadgets running the green robot as their OS, with Froyo starting to quickly fade away. Currently, 2.2 devices account for 40.7% of all Androids.
With Gingerbread and Froyo being the most popular versions, it should be noted that there's still a 10.7% share of Androids running Eclair.
Older versions have largely been phased out and Honeycomb remains pretty unpopular with a total share of just 1.9%.
What everyone is looking forward to, though, is a clear statement from manufacturers regarding an u...

HTC announces specifics on Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades, includes Rezound
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleRezoundAndroid 4.0
It's been a little over two weeks since Google unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich along with its first ambassador, the Galaxy Nexus. Since then, a few manufacturers have shared their intent to bring Android 4.0 to specific devices. HTC was initially rather vague about its upgrade plans -- no doubt faced with the daunting task of keeping Sense relevant in light of ICS' vast design improvements -- but tonight the Taiwanese giant issued an official statement on Facebook outlining specifics on its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades. Basically, it looks like most (if not all) of HTC's high-end phones since the introduction of the Sensation will be getting a taste of Google's latest tasty treat early next year,...
