HP was painfully aware of the TouchPad‘s hardware shortcomings, insider sources have suggested, with ports of webOS running “over twice as fast” on Apple’s iPad 2. While initial reviews – ours included – complained of occasional sluggishness from the TouchPad’s 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon APQ8060 processor, webOS engineers within HP were also supposedly vocal in their complaints about the hardware, The Next Web‘s tipster whispered to them.

OS X 10.7.1 Lion Update fixes Wi-Fi Issues and more
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.7
Since the release of OS X Lion in July, I was pretty pleased with the new features. Then the Wi-Fi connection did not restore all the time after wake-up. Only a Wi-Fi restart fixed the connection. Today Apple released the first OS X Lion Update with OS X 10.7.1. One of the mentioned fixes is the improvement of the Wi-Fi reliability. I already updated my iMac and lets hope the bug is gone.
Other fixes in OS X 10.7.1:
- Address an issue that may cause the system to become unresponsive when playing a video in Safari
- Resolve an issue that may cause system audio to stop working when using HDMI or optical audio out
- Improve the reliability of Wi-Fi connections
- Resolve an issue that prevents ...

Android-powered tablets have taken 20% of the global tablet market from Apple’s iPad over the past 12 months according to new data from ABI Research. While Android tablets have collectively managed to make a sizable dent in the iPad’s global market share, ABI says no single tablet vendor has managed to “mount a significant challenge” against the iPad at this point.

Apple as it promised before before has started shipping USB drives carrying Mac OS X Lion in its retail stores. The $70 drive, unlike the USB recovery sticks, includes a full copy of the OS for those who can't or prefer not to download the whole install itself. Apple isn't offering Lion Server or volume packs in the same terms.

We can't stop iPhone rumors any more than we can stop the seasons or the tides, especially when those rumors focus on the mythical low-cost iPhone which consumers have been calling for since the iPhone first launched. The newest rumor comes from Apple 'n' Apps Trevor Sheridan, who says he spoke with 3 sources "connected to Apple". Not the most to work with, but it'll have to do.

Windows Phone 7 to make iOS and Android look outdated says Nokia's president
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftAppleNOKIAGoogleiOS 4Windows Phone 7Android 2.3
Nokia president and head of North American operations, Chris Weber (no, not the former NBA star) has laid down the gauntlet. In an interview yesterday, the Nokia executive said that Windows Phone 7 makes iOS and Android look outdated. Weber says the big difference between the platforms is that while iOS and Android are built around apps, Windows Phone 7 is built around a user's contacts making things easier and quicker with some functions requiring fewer steps.

Screenshots of a speech-to-text feature that is said to be making its way to iOS 5 have surfaced.
The Nuance-powered feature will require users only to tap the microphone icon next to the on-screen spacebar, and speak aloud leaving text to magically appear on screen.
The microphone overlay (pictured below) appears once you've clicked the microphone and sticks around as long as you keep talking.

Apple releases Lion Recovery Disk Assistant, asserts its dominance over Snow Leopard
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.6Mac OS X 10.7
Distributing your OS digitally certainly makes for an easy upgrade, but what happens when your hard disk spontaneously combusts -- taking Lion's recovery partition with it? Unless you planned ahead and rolled your own install image, you were stuck taking an arduous and painful detour back to Snow Leopard before being given the chance to re-up with Cupertino's latest. That changes today, with the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant, a utility that duplicates the OS's recovery partition onto an external drive of your choosing -- allowing you to boot directly into an installer which'll re-download the latest jungle cat, sans sojourn to 10.6. To do so, you'll need an external drive larger than 1GB, a m...

iOS, Android security flaw shown by 10-year-old girl at Defcon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroidiOS 5
A 10-year-old girl has figured out a way to outsmart game developers and cheat at games designed for iOS and Android by exploiting a security vulnerability within the clock system. The cheat works by modifying the clock settings on the device to accelerate time within the game's environment.
Apparently, CyFi, as the hacker calls herself, was bored playing Farmville-type games and wanted to speed up time in the virtual world to make crops grow faster. Her fiddling with the clock on the mobile device revealed a "zero day" exploit that tricked the game into thinking much more time had passed than was actually the case. Circumventing the game's built-in clock advancement cheat blocks involved m...

Apple releases iOS 5 beta 5
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Enjoying a quiet Saturday? Well, Apple has just released iOS 5 beta 5 for developers. While the update continues the tradition of bringing OTA updates to iOS devices, beta 5 will require your device to be erased before being able to update — a little frustrating, though it’s obviously not meant for the general public. Apple also released an updated iTunes 10.5 beta 5 and Apple TV beta 4.
I have noticed the ability to send a photo from the camera roll directly to the Messages app for iMessage or MMS, additionally the inclusion of a camera button in the camera roll to skip back to the camera after viewing a photo.
The terrible autocorrect algorithm seems to have been fixed.

Apple already giving the green light to iOS 5 apps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Apparently, the list of iOS 5-compatible apps in the Apple App Store has already started to grow. How do we know? Well, at least several apps have been spotted there with iOS 5 compatibility mentioned among their features. That includes the Mashable! app, which has it clearly written in its description and the Camera+ app, which cleverly makes a reference to “that upcoming OS That Must Not Be Named.”
So, now that we have a clue indicating that Apple is already approving iOS 5 apps, does that mean that the new firmware is launching alongside the iPhone 5? Although it does not quite guarantee that, seeing the next iPhone iteration launching with iOS 5 on board now sounds a bit more plausible. ...

Lion Server Supports iOS Management using Profile Manager
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.7
ac OS X Server has long been able to manage preferences and settings for multiple Macs, but new to Lion Server is the ability to manage settings for iOS devices - this is part of Apple's overarching strategy to slowly merge the two operating systems over time.
To manage iOS, Lion Server administrators can use the new Profile Manager to create XML files called Profiles - these profiles can then be downloaded by users, or pushed out to users devices by administrators to manage email settings, password requirements, network settings, and even remotely lock and wipe devices in the event of theft.

Nielsen: Android accounts for 39 percent of smartphones in the US, Apple is the top device maker
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroid
Nielsen's just released a study confirming what some other studies have already concluded -- that Android devices account for the single largest swath of smartphone users in the US, with 39 percent OS share as of the second quarter. That compares with 28 percent for iOS, although Apple still reigns as the country's top-selling device maker. Simply put, that's a reflection of the fact that Apple is the only outfit churning out iOS devices, whereas a bevy of companies led by HTC, Motorola, and Samsung have helped make Android the dominant OS in the states. And let's not forget about RIM, another hardware / software shop, which still commands a 20 percent chunk of the market. Rounding out the l...

Qualcomm Offers Devs Augmented Reality SDK for iOS

Qualcomm recently made a new version of its augmented reality software developers kit available, this time targeting Apple's iOS devices. Qualcomm released a similar SDK for the Android platform last year (specifically those running SnapDragon processors). This new SDK will allow developers to create augmented reality applications for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Augmented reality can be used to create a variety of 3D landscapes over the live view from a phone's camera.

Mac OS X Lion Flash flaws: Adobe admits Apple is not to blame
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.7
Apple and Adobe have been fighting about Flash for what seems like eons now. The latest battle ground is Mac OS X Lion where Flash is having all sort of issues including hogging the CPU, draining battery life and heating up computers.
As part of a long document detailing Adobe product issues following the Mac OS X Lion upgrade, Adobe originally seemed to blame Apple for the problems but it’s now changed its tune…
The notes originally said: “Flash Player may cause higher CPU activity when playing a YouTube video. Possibly related to disabled hardware acceleration.” That suggested that Apple had changed settings and caused the problem. Adobe has now updated its guidance and the picture looks a...
